Ogham is an ancient form of writing. It is an alphabet using lines and cuts in the stone. Ogham stones can be found throughout Ireland and there are a reported 400 stones covering the length and breath of the land.
Knickeen Ogham Stone is situated in the beautiful Glen of Imaal in County Wicklow. This stone has in its time been referred to as a long stone, a standing stone, and an Ogham Stone. It has been dated to around 400-550AD with Ogham writing on the North Eastwards facing corner.
Ogham is often called Celtic Tree alphabet and some of the markings refer to Irish trees. There are four listed Ogham stones in County Wicklow and I am very lucky to have two on my doorstep.
