The Forgotten and Failed Bosnian Muslim Waffen-SS Division: the SS-Kama

During WW2 the Germans created the SS-Handschar Division which consisted of Bosnian Muslims. Another division was created and this was the SS-Kama. A kama is a small dagger used by Balkan sheepherders. It was established in May 1944 and disbanded in October the same year. Himmler wanted to expand Waffen-SS recruiting in the Balkans. Officially called the "23. Waffen-Gebirgs-Division der SS "Kama" (kroatische Nr. 2)". It was acknowledged that if the SS-Kama would be pulled out of Bosnia desertion would increase as the men preferred to protect their own villages instead of fighting a foreign enemy in a foreign land. Ethnic Germans were added to the formation. It was no success and the unit would be disbanded before the year's end.

You are correct that the term 'Bosniak' originated in the 90s. The term used up until that point, Muslims, was no longer accurate as many were non-practicing or atheists due to years of communism.

4:23 The term Bosniak has quite a history. It would signify anyone who was from Bosnia. Of course, at one time there were no Moslems, so it could not have meant a follower of Mohammed in the beginning. Mohammedanism only came with the Turkish occupation of the Balkans. Some Moslems were Turks because Turkish garrisons had to be stationed to control the enslaved population, but some Moslems were half Turks in that they were descendants of Turkish fathers and Bosnian mothers. They people were called "Poturksti". This occurred simply because there were not too many Turkish women and it was also a way of islamisation of the population. Since no on likes to live as a slave, many Bosnians were tempted to convert, especially members of the Bosnian church which was an heretical group and had been largely considered by both Catholics and Orthodoxs as not Christian. Their beliefs were not according to the Nicene Creed. For instance, they did not confess Christ as God and therefore they were in some ways proto-Mostems. It was not big deal to then add that they though some fellow in Arabia was also a prophet. This statement alone got them out of paying double taxes. Now they could do things like riding a horse or walking on the pavement in Sarajevo which was forbidden to the Christians. Therefore they simply continued to call themselves Bosnians in that they were in Bosnia as did the Serbs and the Croatians. Each group would have words to distinguish the other groups, but I would rather not get into that one.

You're right. Ukrainians did rebel in France in 1944. Shot their German leader's and defected to French Partisans. De Gaulle would not surrender them to the Soviet's after the war. Many joined French Foreign Legion 😊😎👍

@@HistoryHustleWhen you said that some claim that bosniak is name from the '90s, but that you read that name existed before, well that is true but there is also fact that Muslims in Bosnia call themselves Muslims, not Bosniaks, until '95-'96, and that is very easy to check, for example in any western press article from that time, when Washington agreement was sign, in 1994, or Dayton next year. Muslims signed, not Bosniaks.

It was an informative and wonderful historical coverage episode about (Hencha) and (kama) Waffen SS divisions organized by Nazism regime when it occupied Yugoslavia during WW2.( Hencha) and (Kama) divisions organized from Muslim 🇧🇦 Bosnian volunteers. As always, the topic of the conflict on the Balkan Peninsula is well covered. Bosnians/Bosniaks does not take its roots from ethnonym, but comes from toponym (Bosna River) and denotes a regional name for the Serbian population. Unfortunately, today the regional name is used for the purpose of political manipulation in order to spread the new identity, created during the Ottoman occupation, to territories that do not belong to it.

The first ss mutiny was in the 7th ss divison Prinz Eugen that was composed mostly of ethnic Germans from Yugoslavia which can be considered Balkan people I think
