I would have suggested a coup d’ etat, but then I realised no other could bring us such quality history videos as our beloved Supreme Commander Mark Felton.

That’s an amazing story, your Grandfather is part of history it was a different world. In English when you talk or write about yourself use I’m(I am) from Bangladesh, instead of Me. Good luck.
The greatest thing about Mark's videos, is that he takes everything seriously. He doesn't exaggerate everything, or make the war seem less bloody and horrifying than it really was. He just shows straight footage, provides the audience with facts, and nothing more. This man is a legend.
Usually I do not comment but for this video I couldn't stay quiet. I was born in Yugoslavia (Vojvodina province in Serbia, Bachka region) and my grandfather (Croatian origin) was recruited by Hungarian army. I remember like it was yesterday he told me many WW2 stories from his days.. As Croatian minority in Hungarian army he did the worst jobs like transporting wet Danube sand on his back, being constantly bullied by officers. In 1944 he ran away from the squad and wanted to join the Soviets but they put him in a concentration camp as he was wearing the Hungarian uniform. He survived as he spoke Russian, Serbo-croatian and Hungarian so Soviets engaged him as a translator. Wanted to say that the situation in Yugoslavia during WW2 was extremely complicated and it is very hard to understand even for best experts in this subject. This video as it is a pure jewel of knowledge. Thanks Mark!!!
My great grandfather fought for the Germans, I was born in Bosnia near Cazin, I remember as punishment he could never get any retirement pension. I wish I could have asked him more questions about the war but he died before I could really understand what ww2 really was.
I'd wager there are a lot of these stories still waiting to be discovered, especially from smaller European countries. There's no glory in them so of course they're not well known.
Its insane to think Germany lost that conflict the whermacht had 13 million men plus auxillary forces not only from bosnia but from many diffrent european countries
I was "taught" history by rote (dates, kings, battles but no context) in school in the 1960s and it was a dry, boring and featureless plain. Since watching Dr Mark Felton and also The History Guy, I have reached an oasis and I drink deeply from their combined fountains of knowledge. Thank you to you both for wonderful, interesting and thoroughly enjoyable history lessons.
Mark it is so important for people to know that learning about history does not have to be a negative thing..you dont have to take anything from your videos other than enjoyment, new knowledge and maybe a greater understanding of why things are what they are..You are admirably neutral and ultra professional...thats why you are heading for a bloody well deserved 1 million subscribers. Congratulations.👍
Why would ANYONE think that there is anything negative about learning history? Few subjects are more fascinating, fun, and important. Remember that gold nugget about what happens to people who fail to study history...?
me neither. i thi k i heard of cleansi g in tbe hanshar ss division. but if memory serves correct was not full strength div like some divs. perhaos the nord div was the same?
@@reesefowler40 I a not intending to be argumentative just for the sake of argument. Waffen SS formations were filled with non-Germans. I did some Google searching and it seems that Himmler really liked and was very proud of "his" Muslim soldiers. HE was very accepting of them as Waffen SS members.
There's a huge difference between knowing some about WW2 and being properly educated. Mr. Felton, you surely are properly educated. I really like how you show us the oddball things that made WW2 more complex of an event than most people like to admit. Thanks and keep up the good work, sir ☝
As someone who is from Bosnia, I remember this getting mentioned in one of my history lectures, but I never took it too seriously and though that it is more or less some of the more legend-based history stories since not that many people talked about it. But over the years I found it interesting to learn that there has been some truth in it.
As a Muslim, I have deep respect for Mark Felton, he has great knowledge and content which outdo anything anyone else can do Keep it up and thanks for all your knowledge, Allah bless you.
Hello Mark! I am so glad that I can finally put a face to your voice and I take this opportunity to thank you so much for all the highly informative historical videos that you offer to us... Take care and stay healthy!
Thank you Mark I’ve been watching history you tubers like you for years now you’ve really helped spark my love in history now I’m starting my history major :)
Another great piece of nearly forgotten history, as well as video. Theres definitely footage here ive never seen before on any documentary. There always seems to be more that can be shown. Thanks again for giving us theses videos. I sure appreciate it.

That is correct. Senior leaderships in the NDH Government were given to Muslims, Islam was declared one of the official State religions and a prominent building in central Zagreb was converted into a mosque with the addition of minarets. Possibly it was the world's first art deco mosque.
@@molaehin5545 Artist Pavillion by Ivan Mestrovic, one of the worlds best sculptors, was converted to Mosque. After the war minarets were torn down. It was converted to it's original use. Actually people in Zagreb still call that building Dzamija. Awsome building, both exterior and interior, if in Zagreb go visit it. It is bound to have some art expo or event, any time of the year.

Its always good to come home after work, and learn something new about history, these lessons I'd really have to dig into the history books on, there lesser known, an Sir Felton does a jolly good job of teaching history, Neutral, Professional, and with great character. Always a pleasure to listen to your stories with my evening tea, good sir.
I have been reading up about ww2 for nearly 4 decades and thought i knew a fair bit but again Mark you presented a snapshot of this conflict of which i had no knowledge, .........thank you!
Almost 1 million. Been supporting since 400k which isn't special but due to you I have been learning more and being more interested in military history. Much love from your subscribers
This is a nice work! Thanks for this. As a Bosnian I have to say; most of Bosnians were actually a part of Tito's Partisans Resistance movement against the Axis. But of course, some of them were recruited to form the Bosnian Muslim Axis division in other for Hitler to gain popularity within the Bosnian Muslim majority in Bosnia. They did not succeed in gaining Hitler's popularity because at first, Handjar division should have been a local division which should have protected Muslim citizens from Chetnik Serbs committing crime against them. Instead, they were transferred outside of Bosnia and betrayed by the Nazis. They were not ideologically Nazis but only way to get weapons and equipment to help their own community against the Serbs' crimes was getting it from the Nazis. Lastly, I have to say that it's wrong for you to say that these Bosnian Muslims were speaking Serb-Croatian because we have our own language - Bosnian.
mak , this is true. it is best seen today. Bosniaks, Bosnians in the Croatian army ... only cannon fodder, what ideology, what copper, pure nonsense. you will be put in a situation to defend your family and you have no weapons

Thank you Mark for your amazing dialect and accents and knowledge my good friend. As bad as thing are in the states it's nice 👍 to escape to the old country with you my friend.
These videos are so amazingly crafted, that even when I thnk "I don't care about this topic"; I will still sit there and watch the whole thing!😄 Cheers!
Lots of them were used during the Cold War for their anti-communist credentials. Of course, people with principles who pride themselves on their righteous integrity would only use such vile ex-Nazis to only shovel pig shit in Poland.
Hey Mark, great video as usual! A few interesting things about this division and where I live: The Town where I live held one of the biggest rallies when it came to recruitment of the division. When the communist partisans took over this area, it was punished severely. The town and the local villages mostly evacuated and ran to surrender to the Western Allies, but they were killed in the Bleiburg repatriations. That was the norm, all who were known to collaborate were punished severely with their families, which meant that the remaining Bosnians of the 13th had nowhere to go, so they were employed as mercenaries.
Yes, Mark Felton opted to leave out anything about Operation Keelhaul, but then highlighting dodgy dealing by the 'Good Guys' is bound to meet with disfavour on YT.
@@Fanakapan222 Yes, every one of the postings I have made on YT which refers to the betrayal of anti communist people, and the murder of German POW's, after WWII has been deleted by YT.
It's bizarre how trained SS troops were in high demand after the war. The French had hundreds in the Legion fighting to retain Vietnam as a French colony.
In the book "Hell in a Very Small Place" Bernard Fall talks about the Waffen SS in the Legion in Vietnam (French Indo China). He says that it's an accepted myth and that most recruits to the Legion came from Eastern Europe. The average age of the Legion in 1954 was 23 so that most of them would have been boys in 1945. In Eckhard Micehl's Deutsche in der Fremdenlegion 1871-1965:Mythen und Realitataetan (Germans in the Foreign Legion 1871-1965: Myths and Reality) it says that a small number of Waffen SS were able to get into the Legion but when the French government got wind of it they stopped it. One French officer estimated the number of ex-SS accepted into the Legion as 60-70. Perhaps that's a topic Dr Felton could research.
@We C You You make a good point about the legion not being too worried about someone's past and in the chaos after WW2 it was probably a lot easier to lie about what you'd done for the past five years. It may have been that anyone with their blood group tattooed under their arm as the Waffen SS had, was excluded. That was a method of identifying ex-SS after the war but it wasn't 100% accurate. My understanding is that nowadays the Legion is more selective since they get so many applicants. They had the reputation for taking anyone but while they may now accept someone with a minor criminal history they wouldn't accept serious criminals (murder/rape/robbery).
@@petermortimer6303 Thank you for answering for me and attempting to clear up this myth. Unfortunately its BS that is somewhat accepted these days. More importantly Hell in a Very Small Place is one of the greatest war stories written. Bernard Fall’s follow up; Street with no Joy is worth a read. It’s a shame he was a causality of war.
As Bosnian man I have heard many versions of this story thank you for finally clearing up some things it is absolutely amazing how much propaganda was taught to us as kids
It's interesting you should mention the 6th SS Mountain Division "Nord", from which Herbert von Oberwurzel has transferred (<a href="#" class="seekto" data-time="216">3:36</a>). Nord is notorious for fleeing the battlefied in Salla, Finland, in 1941. Himmler tried to keep it under wraps, but the debacle became legend among Finnish soldiers, who then fought alongside the Germans. My uncle, a veteran of the Continuation and Lapland Wars, told me how they'd bring up "Salla" whenever the Waffen-SS soldiers got too big for their britches. Maybe an idea for another Mark Felton production?
@@nozecone Didn't the Nazi's ban freemasonry? In fact I think in Hitler's table talk he rails against Roosevelt for pretending to be Christian while being a secret mason.
To get Mark's material on the supposed History Channel, he'd have to do something about a commando raid of an abandoned storage locker that unearths proof of an ancient mating between Bigfoot and Little Green Men from Rigel Kentaurus.
