The Forgotten Grail Cards of the Junk Wax Era- The Data Shows the High Upside of Minor League Cards

I recently posted a video about the supply and demand of sports cards, with the attempt of demonstrating how many cards from the junk wax era, will have a hard time becoming valuable. Others, however, have a lot of potential upside. The comments and feedback was substantial, but several subscribers pointed out the group of cards I forgot to mention: Minor League Cards. @jaymedorr4119 and others pointed out several minor league cards that are incredibly rare and have a massive upside. I started looking into it, and the more I read and the more I investigated, they were absolutely right.
I had a negative experience with a minor league card as a kid, and it kind of scarred me moving forward; essentially eliminating the possibility of adding them to my collection. In retrospect, that appears to have been a mistake. Many of these cards have extremely low supply and enormous demand, making several of them extremely valuable. In this video I take a closer look at several minor league rookie cards, their population reports, and recent sales data. They are definitely a group of cards to consider and I'll start monitoring them much more closely.

I’ve never heard of any of these cards but the prices don’t surprise me. I’m actually surprised with the low pop, they don’t sell for more. When a collector, focus on a certain player, I’m sure they fine these cards and want them. Thanks for another great video!

Chris Sewell said that the Ripken Minor League card would be a ''holy grail'' for him. It's very expensive as there are, so few of them. They rarely show up on eBay.

As a kid that grew up going to Pawtucket Red Sox games and watched Clemens pitch a rehab game there, that Pawsox card of his was the one every local kid wanted but was too expensive then. This brings me back to those days and how bad I wanted that card. I think it’s time to pick one up. Thanks for reminding me

We probably think of minor league or pre-rookie cards, which they basically are, as an after thought, the niche is so small, but the supply is even smaller. Geesh. I didn't know the Ripken Charlotte card could go upwards 20,000 dollars...😲

As a former Expo fan, the only minor cards in my set I would guess are valuable are 2 different 1996 Vladimir Guerrero cards(Harrisburg Senators & West Palm Beach Expos) along with a 1987 Jacksonville Expos team set that includes Randy Johnson and Larry Walker.

I wouldn't consider the 1977-1980 cards junk wax. The 1977 Ricky (Rickey) is probably the shortest printed ML card out there. Not many ever surface. Always wanted to find that and the 1980 Orange Ripken. There's some insanely cool 1970s ML cards too as well as the infamous 1914 Ruth =)
@MidLifeCards
@MidLifeCards Год назад
I agree that 77-80 isn’t really junk wax…but collectors from the junk wax era collected Rickey, so he seemed appropriate to include. But, fair point for sure.

Another great video! I recently learned this myself and thought you might like to know. When reading the pop report, the second row is for half grades and the third row is for grades with qualifiers. So if you are quoting total pop, you need to add up all three rows.

Would love to have either of the Rickey Henderson minor league cards, I have his 80 Topps and 81 fleer and Donruss, Very underrated player, the best leadoff hitter in mlb history, if Dale Murphy isn't in the HOF, Mattingly doesn't deserve to be
@MidLifeCards
@MidLifeCards Год назад
Rickey is no doubt the best leadoff player either. So many walks. So many hits. So dangerous on the base paths. He could absolutely change the dynamics of an inning/game. In my opinion, Mattingly and Dale Murphy should be in. But, I don't get to vote.
@bagwell78
@bagwell78 Год назад
For the junk wax era, I really only focus on the minor league cards and skip the mainstream overprinted MLB rookies. I have most of the minor league 1sts of the HOFers who started their careers in the late 70s and up..... Jack Morris 77 TCMA, TCMA Memphis Chicks Tim Raines, the TCMA Baines, Sandberg, Lee Smith, Gwynn..... Procards Randy Johnson, Maddux, Glavine, etc. The two cards that I am missing are the O's Ripken, the Modesto Henderson, and the Puerto Rican League Mike Schmidt. People chase "rookies" but, I'd argue, that these are the true rookies, as they are the first appearance of the player in a professional uniform. Not to mention, the minor league cards tend to be much more scarce. They have been overlooked, as they've been under the radar for many, and for those aware, they were considered "oddball" cards. They have, however, been taking off, since making their appearance on eBay, and with sites like the trading card database, people are discovering the plethora of cards players may have that precede their "rookie".
@MidLifeCards
@MidLifeCards Год назад
Wow. Sounds like you've got an amazing collection.
@bagwell78
@bagwell78 Год назад
@@MidLifeCards I picked up a lot of them years ago when they were still relatively under the radar, not many folks were aware of them. That being said, a lot of the minor league cards of HOFers from the 80s and 90s are still pretty accessible price wise. Bagwell, Piazza, Pedro, Frank Thomas, Jeter, Larry Walker, Ivan Rodriguez, Cabrera Pujols, Randy Johnson, Smoltz, Glavine, Ortiz, etc., you can pick them up raw for $25 - $100. Maddux, Gwynn, some of the Ripken cards, the Larry Fritsch Kirby Puckett, are around $150-$200 raw....and then you have a handful that are pricey, just because of their scarcity, the 1980 TCMA Sandberg (the 1981 is pretty affordable), the Platinum San Bernardino Griffey, the WTF Ripken, the O's Ripken, the Gossage Puerto Rican, Schmidt Puerto Rican, the Jim Rice Puerto Rican, the 77 TCMA Jack Morris and the 78 Baines. But, for most part, minor league collecting of the junk wax era guys, is very accessible.
@ACollectorsDream
@ACollectorsDream Год назад
Great job of highlighting minor league cards. They are forgotten because many collectors want players in the majors uniform.
@MidLifeCards
@MidLifeCards Год назад
Agreed. I think that may be why some of the modern cards when players are in College Uniforms, don't sell for more. It's curious to see where demand goes/stays for those types of cards. But for some of these, the supply is so low...much demand at all results in quite a bit of value. I still don't have any minor league cards myself, but I do find them intriguing.

Fair point. It would've been impossible for me to go through all of the minor league cards out there that have value or interest...so I tried to touch on some of the more expensive ones and players that are highly collectible. I think photographs are really starting to catch on and PSA is doing a lot of grading of them. I also think Ticket Stubs have taken off over the past couple of years.
