I live here. The TeePee Motel used to be the glory of Wharton. After the Harvey flood they were badly damaged. I think the owner only rents them out by the month to workers now.

I am somewhat familiar with the Tee-Pee hotel in Wharton. I believe they actually date back to the 40s (WWII) when the highways were being built when a lot of these niche hotels and attractions were dotting the landscape. If I recall they were abandoned in the 80s lying dormant. A local won the lottery (literally) and used those funds to renovate this landmark in 2005. There is a profile of this establishment on the Texas Bucket List here on RU-vid, check it out. As for the rates, I did an overnight in ‘10’ and if memory serves, I believe it was in the $70 range.

My husband was from Wharton - I'm from Houston, and sometimes we'd drive down to Wharton to visit his family. I remember this fantastic restaurant we used to stop at called "Fillers", I think was the name. The food was so good - I used to order the chicken fried steak.

Those Tee Pees are awesome! I remember they were abandoned out in a field. They're a throwback to the old Route 66 days of roadside attractions. It was set to be demolished but some guy who won the lottery scooped it up, renovated it, and opened it back up for business. We have a couple Roadtripps-Investigations there in Wharton and I love that small town and the renovated courthouse in the charming town square. The money they spent renovating the old courthouse to look like it's original, beautiful architecture from the bland art deco style was money well spent for the county! I've been subbed to your channel for a while. I enjoy your content and same love of road trips and small towns that we have. Would you be interested in a collab sometime? Even if it's just a good voice over intro? I'd love to introduce your channel to our audience, even though we're a smaller channel than you. Or even if you're ever interested in doing a ride along with us to a "haunted" location? That would be cool. We're also based out of the H-Town area. Anyway, another good episode my friend! Keep up the awesome work!

The Karankawa Indians once occupied the land that is now Wharton. It's said they were very tall, with the average man between six and seven feet tall... much taller than the Europeans of the day (a tale that's likely exaggerated).

A little insight into the Dinosaur. The was created by an eccentric artist that used to live in Wharton back in the 1990's. The guy also used to live in a castle he built on a small barge floating in the river. Normally there's a park around it but the park is undergoing some remodeling.
