The first victims of the arms race of the superpowers during the Cold War were of all those who had never participated in an armed conflict: the inhabitants of the Eniwetok Atoll in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. After ten years with forty-four nuclear weapons tests, an uninhabitable, contaminated lunar landscape remained.
