Why not give this crazy rare "Malaise Era" Pontiac a rotisserie restoration? Dennis found this 1977 Pontiac Can Am at the Adirondack Nats in Lake George, NY. #pontiac #musclecar #1977
I live in a tiny town of less than 7000 people, and one of these pulled up next to me at the gas pumps just a couple of months ago. I didn't even know what it was at the time (And I'm from that era. Got my first license in 79). I did a bit of research, and this guys story jibes exactly with what I learned about the production of the car. (In fact, he may have even written the wiki article I started with..)
Pontiac did some aesthetic trickery with the mid '70's LeMans. The lines and grille /rear design made these look so much larger than they are. Almost like a B body when they are standing alone, until they are parked next to a Cutlass, Malibu, Regal, etc.
I had a 1976 Grand Prix SJ in High School in the early 1990's It was a rusty $200 special with ?09,000 miles on it. It did have a strong 400 four barrel in it and would still bury the 100 mph speedo while riding smoothly.
I doubt the local cops had can ams, likely lemans. There were only 1377 of these built and he nailed it. It was the spoiler that killed them off. Left a lot of orders unfilled
I own a 1978 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am that is fully restored (engine is still original with 350K miles). It was my fathers first car back in 1985. Anyway, it's really cool seeing these old Pontiacs. I remember seeing one of these CanAms at a car show when I was 8 years old back in 2009. I can't say I've seen another in person lol. From I've experienced, the 2nd gen Firebird Formula and Trans Am didn't have the rear-spoiler issue mentioned in this video, even though both this and the 2nd gen Trans Am were so similar. Awesome
Guy in high school had one brand new. Molar guy here, but I though these were great at a dismal time in Detroit performance and design. Much more unique than the TA at the time
I am also from Rochester. I bought mine in May of 77. Traded it in at Pitts Pontiac in 1984 and bought it back from the salesman’s son in 1989. I kept it until 1998 when I 4:19 4:19 sold it to my wife’s cousin. The rotisserie rebuild is almost complete. Not sure if I will get it back or not. If I do, I’ll be the 1st, 3rd and 5th owner. It is still numbers matching. Carb to rear axle.
I saw a guy at a car show as a kid with one of these, guy was super nice, ngl this may be the same guy especially since he said he was from Rochester NY.
When I was growing up must’ve been maybe eight years old there was one of these down by the park in Sayreville nj it was really cool because that air shocks and like 60s on the back and then two blocks away was a mustang KR 500 parked .. it’s amazing that these cars we’re both daily drivers
My mom had one special order drove it into the ground. Sat under a carport for many years till a guy saw it and and traded a antique table for it😅 he restored it I see it around every once and a while
hmm. interesting. I live in OKC in the late 90s. looked at a can am for sale. I drug my feet and it was sold. never saw another for sale again. wonder if its the same one.
These can out when I was in high school. Never liked anything that came out after 74 because of all the stupid emission rules and those hideous bumpers. I love Pontiacs, but not from the mid 70’s and through the 80’s. Love your show, Dennis.
There are two of these being sold together near me on Marketplace right now one being a parts car for the other. Not asking a lot of money but so rough can't see how it would be worth the effort. Nice looking car BTW.
1300 seems low because I remember seeing many of these when they were new. Although I was pretty young and it may have been the same car I saw at different times cruising around. lol
the america that i loved. To protect this car against rust : put grease every where : between carpet and metal, inside rear gate, doors, under the car, rear wings, behind bumpers, when you cannot reach these places with a paintbrush, use an extender to pour oil. to be repeted regulary for oil. Grease is the only thing really very efficient againt rust. it is my experience of 35 years.. from france.
ANY proper restoration of an older car should be done thoroughly with POR-15. I did a frame-off restoration on my '67 GTO in 1990. EVERYTHING possible was prepped with a basecoat of POR-15...then...top-coated with the proper paint. My GTO sees about 6,000 road miles a year & there is not 1 spec of rust anywhere inside, underneath, etc. Best regards, Ben
I had a 1976 TransAm and one day I was at the dealersip and the Salesman gave me the keys to a CanAm and told me to take it out for a ride. I took it out and it was pretty good but it wasn't a TransAm so I declined to buy it.
@@edwardpate6128 A guy I knew back in the day ordered a new Pontiac Can Am. He was a Pontiac Guru & turned-me-on-to LOVING Pontiacs. The first thing he did was ditch the catalytic converters, exchanged the exhaust manifolds for Hooker Headers & changed the intake & carb for aftermarket pieces; Edelbrock & Holley...I think. He did an ignition upgrade too. Believe me, it was VERY hard to beat in the 1/4!!!! 🙂 Best regards from Yucatan Mexico, Ben
As mentioned above, this car has what’s known as the W72 which was a high performance Pontiac 400. Most Can Ams had the W72. In the People’s Republic of California it would have been equipped with an Oldsmobile sourced 403. The shaker would have simply said 6.6 Letre instead of T/A 6.6
AND,... All this talk ... YADA YADA YADA... about things that every one else talks about... yet not one word mentioned regarding the Manufacturers Retail Price.. for this car in 1977... WHY?.. HOW MUCH WAS THIS CAR BACK IN 1077 NEW?.. can someone please cough up that info?..
@@MyClassicCarTV No I can't... I've tried dozens of sites... and they all tell everything about the car but No mention of the original price... that RU-vid video was my last hope... You try it and see if YOU can find anything..!
@@MyClassicCarTV I was curious... because a guy I used to work with.. but do not see any more.. told someone.. that he bought this car brand new when he was 16.... and STILL has it.,. in Mint condition... He is a car buff.. but he could not remember what he bought it for..
Don't Share the Majority praising this , thought they were Homely when New , and they haven't aged well at all in my opinion ! GM's Intermediates started their " Fall from Grace " Style Wise in 73 , and it went Downhill FAST , this one no exception
