In this history documentary we compile all parts of our series on the forgotten Punic Wars between Greece and Carthage! These would span several centuries and occur alongside the more famous Greco Persian wars occurring to the east. Yet it would be in the west that many massive battles both on land and at sea would be fought including a daring Greek invasion of Africa that would result in the siege of Carthage itself.

What Carthage couldn’t accomplish in Sicily for over 300 years, Rome did in a couple of generations. I was definitely a fan of Carthage and the Barcid clan growing up, but man they would’ve accomplished much more had they invested in a standing army, enfranchised the Libyan population, and curtailed the excesses of the oligarchs. Merchants and traders will always put their financial bottom line above everything. Carthage is an early proof of that.

you're wrong by the end of the wars most of sicily was in the hands of Carthage either by direct ownership or through client states with the exception of Syracuse who was cooperating during the early 3rd century bc. Also you cant compare the political, economical and military landscape of the 6th to 4th century BC as opposed to the 3rd century BC. Different times, different circumstances.

The Battle of Motya happened some 60-odd years before Alexander the Great besieged Tyre in his grand campaign against the Persians....I wonder if he saw the parallels of history in these two battles as he built his own land bridge out to a Punic island. Alexander was well-educated and intelligent, so it's possible he drew directly on the lessons learned at Motya but I don't know for sure. Fascinating regardless

Awesome video, that covered much of the Greek-Carthage conflict in Sicily. Though that i would like to add that the conflict between Greeks and Carthageneans started basically in 540 BC, with the sea Battle of Alalia, when the allied Punic-Etruscan fleet, fought against the only Greek colony of Corsica, Alalia - today Aleria -, built by the Phocaeans (who had alredy built the great city of Massalia - today Marseille -, in the coasts of today's France). It's a crucial battle, in which for the first time in history was used the naval ram as a weapon. Also the Greek-Punic conflict in Sicily continued beyond 301 BC, with the arrival of Pyrrus in the island. And a fun fact, in a moment of historical irony, Carthage will be saved during the First Punic War from the Romans of Marcus Atilius Regulus, thanks to Greek mercenary commander, Xanthippus from Sparta.

It already started with the battle of Motya in 580 BC when greek colonists tried to force coloniziation western sicily and during this time the still independent phoenician fortress of Motya repelled these intruders from the western coast of Sicily (maybe with help of the Carthaginians as well)

It’s called “Tyrant”, by Valerio Massimo Manfredi, and it focuses on the personal life of Dionysius, how he rose to power and fended off Carthage’s armies (sans war elephants). The book even mentioned the Athenian expedition to Syracuse during the Peloponnesian War, as well as when Brennus and the Sennones sacked Rome itself.

Really enjoying the videos on wars that are peripheral to the more famous conflicts.

An excellent video, thanks! I have two corrections though: 28:21 - Hermocrates did not send survivors back to Syracuse, he sent the bones of the Syracusans who had died at the Second Battle of Himera to cast blame on his rival, Diocles, the Syracusan general who neglected to recover the remains of their fallen countrymen (Diodorus 13.75.2). 40:08 - Hannibal and Himilco were not brothers, but cousins. This can be concluded by combining a few sources. First from Justin 19.1-2 we get Hamilcar as the father of Hanno and Gisco. Next, from Diodorus 13.43.5 we get Hannibal as the son of Gisco and grandson of Hamilcar. Finally, from Diodorus 13.80.1-2 we learn that Himilco is the son of Hanno, and that he is “of the same family” as Hannibal. The names of these two generals and the names of their fathers are also supported by two inscriptions: a Punic inscription (CIS I 5510) and a Greek inscription (IG I³ 123; AIO 310).

HANNABAL --BORN 243 BC. I was going to to subscribe until I realize this guy knows NOTHING about his subject. This 2nd Greek Sicilian Vs Carthage War was in 481to 480BC. The 3 Sicilian Wars, or Greco-Punic Wars, were a series of conflicts fought between the Carthaginians and the Greek city-states, led by Syracusans, over control of Sicily and the western Mediterranean between 600 BC and 265 BC. I suspect this guy is only after game dollars. And Ignorant, while hoping you are.

At 4:24 the icon used to identify the Phoenicians looks like a trace of the painting "Phoenician Infantryman" by Joan Francesc Oliveras Pallerols, a talented historical artist. Y'all should check out his stuff if you haven't already.

Fascinating, the scale of this conflict is a testimony to the financial strength of Carthage to fund this.

Carthage was awful at war. It was founded way before Rome and couldn't subdue Sicily in 100 years. I'm amazed they lasted as long as they did in the first 2 Punic Wars.
