The Forklift is Completed!

Using parts from vintage Cub Cadet garden tractors, along with metal fabrication and welding work, we are building a rough terrain forklift.
I use a Langmuir Systems Crossfire Pro plasma table with a Razorcut 45CNC plasma cutter and a machine torch to create many needed parts. At times we shift to the Bridgeport-clone knee/vertical mill or South Bend 10 inch lathe to complete a machining step. Occasionally, the South Bend shaper or the Logan lathe is called on for specialty work.
A Hobart Handler welder is my primary MIG welder, and it comes into play at nearly every step. If I'm not running the welder, an Oxy/Acetylene torch or the Eastwood Cut 40 plasma cutter is fired up for some molten metal removal.
Dewalt and Makita grinders and drills, eVolution metal cutting saws, a Grizzly metal cutting band saw and Jet grinders and sanders see regular use in my projects.
Making a forklift will add to the collection of equipment that I have previously built, including the mini-motor grader, mini-dozer and tandem axle Cub Cadet dump truck/gator.

Well, Frank, it's all done! I feel I got to know you during these 31 episodes. I have a complaint. No doggies in this episode? WHAT? Just kidding. I do miss seeing them. I had a good time watching, learning, entertaining myself with your project. I am curious if there will be another project. Love your forklift. Your shop is amazing, wish I had one half as good. You are an amazing craftsman.

I'm not sure how the doggies avoided this episode, they are always around. An editing oversight for sure. Have not decided on the next big project, but I have some ideas. Meanwhile, lots of smaller projects on the punch list.

You do a lot of videos building stuff but you don’t do many videos testing what you build, like the dozer all you did was some light work and not much video seeing it work. It would be really cool to see a video of u using all 3 machines and build somthing or just a video of them all working I think a video like that would get a lot of views!!

Looking at the cables your clamps appear wrong ---- the term "don't saddle a dead horse." The saddle should be on the long cable. It is amazing what you do. Opps didn't watch long enough. ( l would have forget it at the end of the video.

Hi Frank, been good to watch each episode as they come out!! I found I wasn't as interested in the way the grader was done, as this or the dozer build!! When I was younger on the farm, I made and modified earth moving and Agriculture Machinery, same sort of way as you do these builds!! Get an idea in the head, then draw ruff diagrams, then build on the go. I was never really good trying to work off blueprints/plans. Yes, I had some things that didn't go right, but that's a part of a build!!

Nice job Frank! I’ve watched them all. I am so jealous of your shop. Puts my little 3rd car garage shop to shame. Your skills are impressive. My only request is you swap the rear(steer) tires around to match the front. The Chevron pattern being reversed is messing with my OCD 😂

Thank you for the series. I have often thought of trying to build a forklift and while I am not equipped to build one as complicated as you made this one but your exercise really taught me a lot and made me think of issues I hadn’t considered. My plan is to build one that mounts to a 3-point hitch and my goal for maximum height is about 4-foot so I’ll need a trolley setup to get that height. Oh yea, I am looking to build for a John Deere 420.

Kinda sad to see this build end, it was great content. Great job on the forklift Frank. You say your running out of room, so perhaps a new warehouse for your builds would be a nice series to start. Hahaha! One thing I really like, is you are very transparent with your work, and you are not afraid to show mistakes you make along the way, not that you make many. I guess that's why you have two shop foremen's to keep you focused along the way. See you next week!

Watching you put on the clips, I remember (vaguely) the saying, "Never saddle a dead horse." Meaning never put the saddle on the dead leg of those wires, not that that is what you did and you did fix it on the one instantly; just a reminder to those reading comments.

Interesting. Put the heavy metal on the long end and the bent bolt on the short side. Seems logical. Want the bite in on the short side. Al2O3 as I recall - 'transparent Aluminum ' beam me up Scotty says. It is hard and sharp. AL melts like butter.

When you added the cable clamps to keep them from curving. You put a little tension on lift, loosen the two clamps near the thimble, the cable will straighten. Then tighten the second and the last one near the thimble, may have to tap it to the thimble. You will have equal pressure on all clamps. Hope it helps.
