I do not encourage anyone to enter culverts, unclog anything, or enter flooded areas as it can easily become deadly without the proper training
I unclog drains for fun in my spare time (I have been trained in culvert inspections for years with private co.) and I am osha trained.
Exploring anything abandoned can be dangerous or deadly without experience. I don't encourage anyone to enter any abandoned structures. Not only is safety a concern, but often times its illegal, and when possible I seek out permission from the owner or local police. I simply go to document its history before it's gone forever and I leave things the way I find them. I only take pictures and only leave footprints. I assume all the risks and responsibility before doing this. Please don't attempt to do this on your own. There could be nails, asbestos, falling concrete, soft floors, animals, or other hazards. Nice to see you way out here! Not sure if anyone mentioned it yet, but the road you drove down on is the old highway 2 that was in use up until about the early to mid 70's. I remember going up this road in a school bus on our way to ski school. The tree branches were almost hitting the windows of the bus due to the narrow road. Thanks for the memories.

I grew up in the Puget Sound area and explored this area in 1981, there was none of this signage then and was in original abandoned shape. I remember steel doors on the tunnel entrance then. The snow shed back then was not so cleaned out, was overgrown and packed with debris . The nearby Stevens Pass ski area is where I spent a lot of time in my youth, great memories. It is cool that an east coast guy came out to see the great Pacific Northwest!

You can go in about 2 miles if you enter through the East portal. It's spooky, after walking for a while you'll come across a cinder block wall with a man door in it. It's extremely odd to see that when you shine your light on it from a distance. You'll eventually hit water which will become progressively deeper due to the cave-in towards the west portal. Grade is slight and goes uphill from the West side. There's also a section of badly fractured ceiling about a half mile in, which appears to have been shored up with large steel bands and timbers many, many years ago. Seems to have worked! After abandonment, the tunnel was used for storage and then the UW used it in the 1960s to do some laser research. After that, it was abandoned and left to the elements and explorers.

Welcome to the PNW Post 10! I was so excited to see how close you were to us! I'm located just on the other side of Stevens Pass. All the places you went in your video were so very familiar. If you thought the smoke was bad on that side you should see how bad it is on the other side of the pass (assuming the pass is open and you can get through) where the fire started (its only about 20 miles or so from were I live unfortunately) If your still in the area you should go eat at the Sultan Bakery. Excellent food, generous portions and extremely reasonable prices! (Its way more than a bakery! They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as having donuts if your lucky enough to get some before they sell out. lol) Right on Hwy 2 in the (not so little anymore) town of Sultan.

Post10, I’m up in Bellingham and I’m sure we can find some cool things to explore. It’s been a bit dry, but you can always do some preventative flood maintenance. Last year there was record breaking flooding from the Nooksack River, so you can look that up.

I am always happy to see you practice "safety first" when you are exploring. Your decision to not walk across the place where you knew the ceiling had been caving in was a wise one and you have shown that same safety consciousness in past videos. I really enjoy your adventures and exploring videos. I hopped a freight train through the new cascade tunnel about 35 years ago. I've done a lot of exploring in my youth, caves, abandoned mines etc but the best one was when my cousin and I went down through a manhole, through tunnels and ended up in an underground library under the state capital!

Whoooweee! This was almost as fun watching you clean out culverts. Now I know why you didn't post a video for a while, gone on vacation trekking the northern USA. Thanks Post for taking us along. I've always wanted to go there but never had the $ or the chance. Edit: According to Wikipedia about the tunnel being blocked where the water was trickling through, During the winter of 2007-2008, a section of the roof caved in and created a debris dam inside the tunnel, making it impassable to pedestrians due to standing water and ceiling debris. A warning was issued to stay clear of the western side of the old tunnel for a distance of one-half mile for the indeterminate future. I hope this clears up any questions about that section of the video.

Nice! I live maybe 2 hours from there. Leavenworth is a great place for a vacation. Must have been very recent because you can see how bad the wildfire smoke is after the 2nd tunnel

This time of year usually the rivers on the east side of the state are low due to using the water for irrigation purposes from the Yakima Valley where we raise apples, pears, cherries, peaches, etc. We haven't had much rain this summer. fun fact about the new tunnel, west end has giant motorized steel airlock doors open and close for each train, new tunnel also has big fans that clear the air inside after a train has passed.takes about 12 to 15 minutes for air swap to happen.

We have an old railroad tunnel that has been opened to the public recently in Va. At one time it was similar to this one. Abandoned and forgotten. Now it's a 3 mile walkway. Still can't see all the way through it. Thanks for the trip!

Next time your here in Washington State you should go on the Snoqualmie Tunnel hike. It is also a old train tunnel and it's about 2 miles long. You'll need a flashlight. And you'll have to look out for Bicyclists. But well worth it.

I was at the Wellington trail head last August. I was there alone, it was drizzling and I didn’t know if any bears would make an appearance so I didn’t hang around too long. I followed the trail as far as I could to the tunnel portal but access to the portal itself has been blocked for some time I’m guessing because the foliage has grown considerably blocking the path. There were signs telling why this is, the tunnel ceiling is collapsing and has been for a while. I was disappointed but getting as close as I was and being able to get a couple of photos from a distance was better than not.

It’s been inordinately warm this fall it’s been sunny since July. Just now getting our first rain this fall on Friday. (Will consistently rain after this) at least in western WA. So beautiful out there...I can almost smell the pine trees warmed by the sun... The BNSF line that Amtrak travels (Empire Builder) thru Montana travels under a bunch of avalanche snow sheds. It's like traveling thru a one sided tunnel! Theirs are made of wood.

If you think that Tunnel was cool I think the Cascade tunnel and Steven's Pass goes right up to Hope in British Columbia Canada they still have the Othello Tunnels up there, Othello was hit by the flooding, and is closed for the whole of 2020 season, was such a beautiful Tunnel, and was most likely the old part of what was formally called New Caledonia ( back in the 1800's ) which goes I think all the way to New Westminster, British Columbia. You've had an amazing journey, I hope you continue.

Damn, all my regular content providers are off on road trips, except me. Great video. A lot of people who haven't traveled out West do not know about the snow sheds. Snow sheds go all the way back to the building of the first Transcontinental Railroad as a way of getting trains through the Sierras. Samuel Montague, the Central Pacific Railroad's chief engineer invented (or I guess originally designed) them when the Central and Union Pacific were building the Transcontinental. Otherwise, the cost of maintaining the tracks for winter use would have been prohibitive. The original snow sheds were of timber construction, and some were also protected in some places by masonry barriers placed further up the mountain slope. I'm guessing that an active guy like you does not have much free time for reading, but if you do, get a hold of a copy of Stephen Ambrose's "Nothing Like It in the World," which chronicles the building of the Transcontinental. (I cheated. I had the unabridged audiobook) It's fascinating.

Glad you came all the way out to Washington, cool to see all these areas. Bummer there was all the smoke though. The vistas you can get on clear days I'd argue are worth a return trip! Right along 2 is the Bolt Creek Fire, that's a big part of the smoke you were experiencing. Started early September. Nearly got two hikers. You can find their video on RU-vid documenting the whole thing as they had to scramble down as the fire had cut off the main trail they hiked up. We're finally in store for rain to tamp down our fires, but mudslides now become a risk.

Welcome to Washington. I grew up just down the road from Stevens Pass and hiked that area a lot over the last 40+ years. One fun place to explore is to go up the Index Galina Rd to the washout and cross the river. Very close to where you are.
