Didn't spend the first three minutes up-selling her channel. Didn't tell us to "wait until the end for the big secret..." Didn't stop to sell some product halfway through. Did speak well and properly. Did get straight into the subject and cover it concisely.
I find this young lady fascinating. Her breath and depth of knowledge and willingness to learn and expand her horizons is impressive. Her spot on commentary on various subjects is refreshing. She inspires hope for the younger generation and you can tell she will accomplish great things in her life.

The thing I find interesting is the reason it's so pervasive is that it holds shreds of truth, just large enough for people to see and connect to what they know, yet so small it's logical they're overlooked by most.
It's total delusion. There's no exact measurement for a "time" and there is no specific criteria to differentiate Hard Time A from Hard Time B. And a bigger destroyer of this foolishness is that there has NEVER been a good time. For every winner there is a loser. It's evidence that we have much less losers AND simultaneously much less winners than we think. A paradox that is meant to free strong organisms but imprisons weak ones.

Colin you missed a key concept of the quote to make your point and in doing so exemplify it’s meaning. The good times. I understand your quote can’t be valid if these good times exist. But they do. Strong men do take power. Weak men do not, they watch and complain. Did you listen to this young woman. She’s quite intelligent. Also, being knowledgeable about something doesn't necessarily equate to being "intelligent". Wisdom and knowledge are different things, although a certain amount of knowledge is required for one to be wise. These "good times" are good for who exactly? To me it seems that it's good for the greedy/ignorant "strong men" who seem not to be concerned with how the system that they've designed to be "pleasurable" is slowly destroying society and will soon destroy them. Weak men actually play along in the pig pen and don't complain or question it... but the brave men call out the strong men and expose them for their self centered and toxic deeds.
A similar cycle you can easily find in scripture. People, as a whole, tend to follow the cycle of: Humility -> Prosperity -> Pride -> Collapse -> (Repeat).

I found The Fourth Turning to be an interesting book for those who haven't thought about life cycles that in depth. When I learned about the book some years ago I thought it was just common sense. A good spring brings more fruit in the summer which means populations thrive, when populations thrive there is more competition and chaos because winter is indeed coming and the level of death you see is staggering. It's no different for humans than it is for any other animal or nature itself, the timings just change a little. You can see the same thing on a small scale in terrariums over time. I think the biggest misconception I see is people thinking we can somehow avoid the cycle and just stay in a perpetual summer of plenty. There is this phenomenon where a state of being in which things aren't good but are "good enough" is far worse than things being so unpleasant that it spurs you into action.

We are either in the age of pisces going into aquarious or are already in aquarious. Nobody really knows. My reference was to the individual souls snapshot and Dharma as well as planetary transits and aspects.
This is an excellent summary of the book. I read it around 15 years ago as part of a training and certification I received related to the financial industry. It is especially interesting when you can be exposed to the book at a young enough age (as I was) to be able to see the turnings happen later in your life. I hope you have the same experience.
Thank you for highlighting the ideas of this unique book, THE FOURTH TURNING by Howe and Strauss. I read it when it came out in 1997 and I found it to be extremely valuable in putting the events of the last 25 years in a long-term perspective that helped me not to freak out about how weird things have become in 2023 when there is so much division in our country. Howe (and Strauss, now deceased) juggle insights from 'History, Sociology, Economics, Social Philosophy and Culture' in an integrated way that expands one's thinking by leaps and bounds! I have come to recognize the generational rhythms of our society through time - in terms of regularly changing seasons from Spring to Winter - and understand how we arrived at our present 'Winter of Discontent.' Still, I'm going to do my level best to weather the social crisis we are now in the middle of - and help to launch a new trajectory of social history for the generations to come. cheers!

The authors jumped the gun a bit trying to predict the crisis event. It wasn't 9/11, the war on terror, or the 2008 recession. It was the legalization of same-sex marriage, which began a "cold civil war" between those who believe the US should be governed by Biblical laws and those who believe it should be a secular democracy. The legalization of same-sex marriage is when politics shifted from "conservatives and liberals are all real Americans and want the same goals, we just disagree on how to get there" to "conservatives and liberals want a completely different America and there can be no compromise or reconciliation between the two visions." That paved the way for Trump to rise to power. Trump is the crisis POTUS.

His rise to power had more to do w/ this country’s original sin & the hate that is conditioned into some making them falsely believe they are superior bc of their skin tone. Some historians attribute these natural cycles as having to do with the natural span of an empire. I think the most prominent driving factor of these cycles is "living memory." As wise as we like to fancy ourselves and studious of history. Living memory seems like a very powerful force driving history no matter how hard we try to learn from the past we can't escape living memory.
Indeed. I put these cycles simply down to the human life span. The people born during or just after WW2 arrived into a time of rebirth, hope and optimism. They engendered that into their kids (Gen X and Millenials) and tried to instill values about, let's say good citizenship which their own parents literally fought for. By the time GenZ comes around these values and the time and place they come from seem absolutely archaic. The exponential growth of technology has only served to deepen this phenomenon. So now we face into a renewed time of chaos and danger, simply because the last time we experienced it is beyond living nmemory

I’ve read this book twice. Very good. Very relevant. It’s good to have an idea of where we’re going. Their analysis of the generational archetypes are pretty accurate.
Reminds of the book Pendulum by Roy Williams and Michael Drew. They also follow the 80 year cycle although they see us swinging from we to me generations. 20 years to peak me, twenty years back to balance, 20 years to we, 20 years to balance and so on. We generations value the group, doing what’s right for others, but attack outsiders. Then society swings back to a me generation valuing individuality and becoming self centered and outlandish in an attempt to be unique. It’s a pretty interesting read.
I highly reccomend this book too, It delves deeper into the theory, and how generational thinking came to pass, going as far back as ancient Greece and ancient Rome. It is an eye opening, prophetic read that left me with a little hope that there is light at the end of the tunnel.
My first time here, and loved your explanation of this publication. I am a baby boomer and my parents taught me well about life and that it’s not a free ride as many do today I feel sorry for teenagers in those in their early 20s. And many have not been raised correctly or taught what to expect. They have been distracted by audio and video screens and have not applied themselves to work for a living. Sad but true.
People respond to the world they live in. In relation to cost of living, jobs pay extremely poorly today. Its not motivating when entry level jobs pay $15 per hour but a studio apartment is $2100 per month or a starter home is $600,000. It doesn't motivate people to work harder, it motivates them to quit. Work has become less and less about getting ahead in life and more just about running on the hamster wheel to exhaustion. So people are going to quit. Baby Boomers worked hard, but also had a drastically lower cost of living to make that work actually rewarding. The 1950s and 1960s had the best income to cost of living ratio. People become pretty motivated when they see that their work can actually net them positive results.
You did an excellent job summarizing this book. I remember it really resonating with me when i first read it back in the early 2000s. While it's no prophesy, it can certainly provide some useful guidelines to help navigate through uneasy times. The book that came before it, Generations is also worth reading with a lot more historical analysis.

Love the book, read it twice. It’s a more granular look at a similar perspective laid out by Oswald Spengler in Decline of the West. That’ a tough one to get through but similar in its view of the human experience as cyclic. Inception, Discovery, Enlightenment, Collapse.
I’m 21 so considered Gen Z and what I find really interesting is that statistically Gen Z is the least interested in drugs, alcohol, casual sex. Which would follow the theory in the book as well. Mental illness is also rampant but there are a LOT of “artistic” personalities in my generation. I’ve also always been called “thoughtful” or wise growing up so I’m wondering if it’s just because I grew up in chaos. To me it seems when you grow up in a chaotic world you feel a pull towards a peaceful, simple life. You feel a strong desire to leave the world as we know , because it feels so unstable and unpredictable. This is further emphasized in the popularity of minimalism, cottage-core, etc.
This makes sense, as when the hippies of the 60s became a thing it was pushing back against the 40s and 50s lifestyle of prim and proper. So they wanted to rebel. Now being the “rebel” is the normal thing and being reserved is the odd thing. We always want what we don’t have, I think. We always think the grass is greener. I also believe gen z or many of them have such a skewed view on socialization due to social media, even things like reading books seems rare since textbooks are mostly digital, people read on their phones if at all, and with the amount of news constantly being reported 24/7/365 yet we are all still falling into echo chambers bc so much stimulation makes us numb. And that refers to all of us, not just you gen zs. I know I’m personally bad about instead of reading a book, I’ll go to RU-vid and watch several analyses of it. Bc I just can’t seem to sit down long enough and pay attention to words on a page, more than a few pages, at least.
Thats just because Gen Z is mostly sterile and defective, embracing non binary and what not after being poisoned by the environment. Very artistic though, oops, I meant autistic. 😂

I've read it twice, literally. Excellent book written in 1997, was blown away by the prediction of an insurrection around or before 2025 & so much more info that connect the dots to how each generational Turning arrives. Yes we are in the 4th Turning.

I've been very mindful of history repeating recently, but I'd never considered it from the perspective of a 4 generation cycle, or the different life experiences that come from whichever stage you happen to be born during that process. This time frame (22 years) also coincides with sun cycles. If you trace conflicts and major unrest back in time, there is a close correlation with spikes in solar activities. Solar cycles and planetary influences would be expected to contribute to the activity of the highly sensitive apparatus present on and about Earth's surface -- terrestrial life. But the astrological flavors referenced in this reading seem to regard whole periods as somehow coherent in this or that aspect -- and that would seem to imply a much lower frequencied sort of influence, possibly from a galactic source?

The book was super accurate on the timing. 2008, the start, was when the Great Banking Crash happened. 2028 is about equal to how long the last Depression in the 1930s ( A minor Financial Even compared to to this 230 year Super Cycle Depression event now ) lasted to hit bottom. AMAZING!
Reading this some time back I found it fascinating that they had not only identified financial patterns but also 80 year _major_ martial conflicts that align. Nevertheless, I believe they got carried away with analysis in between. There are just too many natural anomalies and social whims to extrapolate as neatly as they have. The book does an awful lot of "cherry picking" and stereo typing to support the theory. For instance, no international conflict or pandemic in 90s. Early 2000s were far from "roaring" (that actually occurred in 90s) Early 80s recession was more widespread and higher unemployment than 2008 yet no historical mirroring. These are significant culturally affective events. Lastly, the so called _Lost Generation_ were the largest contributors to the advent of most the basic modern inventions, literature and musical influence we now enjoy. Yet in at least 2 of his books he seems to dismiss them as zombies and goons......
One correction, in the book it never pinpoints the date to 2008, the author never claim to be Nostradamus. It just says there will be an event which begins the crisis in the mid 2000s. It was identified as the GFC afterwards.
@@maxi-me thank you glad I’m not the only one who is sensing the political spin in it, it seems to want to demonize and prop up certain generations of people. I’m a millennial and while I agree our generation is dealing with alot of struggles not of our making, there are a lot of people my age refusing to get a job or living off disability, those who do work, many have useless degrees and can’t even change a flat tire if required, that’s not a recipe for a generation here to save /remake the world from those “zombies & goons”.
Strauss and Howe really made some great points in the original book, but they got a bit carried away in the the 2000s predicting the crisis. It wasn't 9/11, the war on terror, or the 2008 recession. None of those changed society the way a real fourth turning does. The actual crisis is the culture war that has been brewing since the '80s. It kicked into full gear in June 2015 when same-sex marriage was legalized, Caitlyn Jenner was on the front cover of Vanity Fair Magazine, and Donald Trump rode down the golden escalator as the "messiah" for those who want a more traditional, hierarchal society.@@maxi-me The climax of the crisis began in 2020 with the pandemic, and then in 2021 with the attempted insurrection.
As a first-timer on your page, great review! I think it's fair to say that history rhymes in its cycles because of unresolved problems. Without those kinds of resolutions, our cycles will continue to reset. I'm just thinking out loud.
Sounds like an interesting book and paradigm. One small critique might be that it's probably pretty easy to find these patterns in a relatively short period of time, i.e., Revolutionary War to current. My guess is that it's more difficult to ascertain these Turnings in other places with far longer timelines.
It has been clear to me that everything seems to operate in cycles, from the cosmic to the subatomic, which includes all of our macro human reference frames. I'd call them "spirals," because although they resemble each other they have nuanced differences each time around, and seem to have an obvious temporal element. It's interesting to see that some authors have quantified one of these many cycles and written about it, and I'll be curious to read what they have to say. I ordered the book immediately.
That's the second time I've seen somebody refer to life as a spiral. Different context though; they said "even if you're back to the point you started, you'll be more knowledgable, more experienced, arrived one level deeper. Life is not a circle, it's a spiral." As for history; one that I like is "History doesn't repeat itself. It rhymes.". (edit: lol, I should've finished the video) I don't know if I agree with the sentiment though. We are meaning-making machines. We survived on pattern recognition, and we're kind of stuck in this mode. This doesn't mean there's an actual pattern to be observed. Using history as a map for the future feel a bit like reading tea leaves.

I read this book years ago on the recommendation of Glenn Beck and, not being a historian, ploughed through it over the course of a year. I feel it's one of the best and most prescient books I've ever read. The outcome of this Fourth Turning, or Crisis, remains uncertain. I agree with this young lady it does not have to end badly, and further argue it's necessary we go through this painful period to achieve rejuvenation, if possible. That being said, it's not a foregone conclusion that things will be better on the other side (imagine if we had lost WW II). It will be determined by the decisions we make going forward and the courage we can muster. This time it's an internal battle.
Even if you lose a war it's not the end, look at Germany and Japan. Sometimes when you win a war you still lose. Look at russia. They were allies with us in WWII and just 45 years later they collapsed and haven't recovered from that yet 34 years later.
What s great synopsis of a lot of data. I love the theory as well, and at age 72, I have lived it and watched this story unfold. This Fourth Turn scares this guy as I fear geo-political forces will dynamically change the way if life in America as we have known it. I look forward to seeing more of your posts 👍🏻

I always had those thoughts about society in general before I knew there was a book to reference my thoughts by. It's written by CD Payne who wrote Youth and Revolt and I fell in love with those books in my late teens early twenties. Magicians of the Gods and The Myth of Normal are both more thought provoking books that will keep your brain busy. If you do read them I hope you enjoy them, I sure did/am.

I read this book and it has actually helped me to get through this crazy time we are going through. All the hate bothers me the most. It's good to know my gen z son will be fine and will come out stronger from all this craziness.
I remember buying this book in the late 90s and becoming completely enamored with the message and patterns. I’ve continued to consider all of the contemporary news and events in the years since in light of the pattern. I sometimes wonder if we are about to emerge into the next 1st turning very soon.
When we can solve the culture war, we'll go into the first turning. I'm hoping we can do it without civil war in the USA. These are incredibly dangerous times. If the US is going to have a second civil war, it will start within the next three years. I'm an extreme pessimist about the present reality, but I'm optimistic about the 2030s because I believe if we can get through the next few years without the cold civil war going hot, we'll move into a new first turning in the 2030s.

There are more dates to note, but March 23, 2023, when Pluto enters Pisces, was the latest aspect to capture my attention.
Everything moves in cycles. From the stars, to sleep. From the human microcosm, to the macrocosm of society. The job is this: when one finds oneself stuck in what some call a "karmic cycle", the cycle must be broken. So, now that patterns are recognized, what must happen are actions for change, I'd surmise. The waxing and waning of life is only as painful as we allow it to be.

Well done. I first heard of the book Generations from a friend when it was first out. It was an interesting conversation but I didn't read it until I started noticing some of the things that we discussed actually happening around 2002. Stil then I have kept reading on the subject. I read The Fourth Turning back in the 90's and this was a good glimpse into it.
I think fourth turnings are like the fires that spread through forests, clearing out the underbrush. They are painful but needed to allow the forest to rejuvenate and grow stronger. That’s why I study things like this. It’s easier to survive the fire if one knows the most likely path it will take.

The fourth turnings are myths. We are pattern recognition machines trying to make order out of a chaotic world. There might be mild generational tendencies but past that it is a lottery.
History repeating itself within the span of a long human life does make sense. Younger generations never experienced history directly so they are more apt to repeat it; as those who experienced or learned the lessons from history die there are fewer to warn them of the consequences. For example, as most of the World War vets have passed away I have noticed more people, especially of the younger generation, become open to authoritarian government policies.

Love this. It's true. There are a lot of philosophers who describe seasons like this... as well as motivational speakers and other influential leaders. It's really cool how you and the the writers describe what happens in each generation though...the psychology of how each season affects a group of people. Davidson and Rees-Moog, in “The Sovereign Individual,” basically said that a sufficient understanding of the past was a gateway to being able to correctly predict the future with a surprising degree of accuracy…only they were likely far more interested in investing than LaVey was. Cycles and repeats also happen in our own lives. If we pay attention close enough, we can catch cycles that we don’t like …heal ..and change our future reality.

I was immediately reminded of a Taoist explanation of cycles. A natural course of events, human lives, etc. is that everything progresses or rises to its apex & then begins to fall (fail). This is a natural occurrence & we can find it in nature & everywhere. The wise person & society observes reality clearly & prepares for the eventual fall (fail) to lessen its pain & devastation. I'm not a scholar, but it doesn't appear that our species has learned from past mistakes. I attribute this to general laziness & widespread brainwashing. Loved this book. It is best to listen to the audio book because they have a podcast long form interview at the end with the authors that is a prophetic listen. It is equally important to listen to as the book itself.

ah... it's that theory about generations and cycles. it's quiet of true, even wikipedia lists "ages" every 80 years roughly, are we still in information age or we are now in nano age?
This makes sense to me as we are products of our environment. as such an individual will develop skills depending on what is necessary. My dad fist fought in a ghetto to move up and out and raised me in wealthy upper middle class neighborhood. He did better for me but sometimes would remark I was physically weak and not prepared for fights. I thought this odd: he simultaneously wanted me to have a better life while digging at me for having said better life.
