Framework is always a fun conversation topic! This seems like a first generation product but still many things done right, while $2700 is quite a bit of money i remember about 15 years ago people paying about a 50% premium for their laptop to just write vaio on the case, and i dont remember them to be that reliable! The good thing is that there is the possibility for framework to fix/upgrade many of the problems down the line, like a bigger touchpad module or a better keyboard or screen etc If nothing else at least for me Framework is making interesting products, even if they are quite a bit outside my price range, which seems to be most tech products nowadays!

Really appreciate the straightforward view, non-sensational, no music, lack of unnecessary jump cuts, etc. Given their focus, I’ll keep my batch 2 order and expect them to resolve any of these issues. If they can’t handle that within the return window... well. I trust they will, but they’ll have to prove themselves regardless.

Nice analysis and rundown. My next laptop will likely be a Framework, and I've been seriously looking at the 16, but I think I might wait until the next gen of the 16's design. There are some fit/finish things you highlighted that I'd like to see worked out. I'm patient and my current daily laptop still have another couple years of life in it yet.

While the modularity of the keyboard and track pad is neat, I hope they have options for a solid all-in-one face plate in a few configurations, mimicking the look and feel of the 13" models. I would opt for a number pad on the right, and the keyboard and touch pad to the left as one solid plate.
@bland9876
@bland9876 3 месяца назад
You want the track pad to not be in the center? Also why left? Assuming your right-handed wouldn't it be better on the right?
@mllarson
@mllarson 3 месяца назад
@@bland9876 Because that's how all other laptops with a number pad have it. If the track pad was on the right my palm or wrist might activate it. Normally the track pad is centered on the keyboard, making it on the left when there is a num pad. Also, I'm left-handed but I still use my right hand for mouse activities.

Conceptually, I see machines like this as ideal for group deployments like student laptops at schools. In the likely scenario that something breaks due to rough handling it would be easier and less expensive for an IT person to replace individual parts than a whole machine. That said, the price point and the fit/finish quirks might be a tough sell. I hope that Framework is able to address and iterate on some of the common issues moving forward. It feels like they have a decent platform (a "framework" if you will) and that improvements (like different screen, keyboard or track pad configurations) can be released to meet those pain points in the future.

Good video. I think I have watched every other review on RU-vid to date, showcases to me that it is an interesting product, but that it feels like it isn't quite done yet. Though the communication between Framework and the preorder customers seems to indicate the same. I am looking forward to more of your vidoes about this product, but all of the reporting has somewhat tempered my interest for the device, though the Framework 13 is looking more interesting. Personally I was hoping that the overengineered cooling could allow me to have a laptop that is perfectly silent.

Good review. All the points made, are valid. Criticism on point. I hope to order one at the end of this year, but the cost is the biggest hindrance in the thought process. The high cost defeats the idea of making it mainstream. But making it cheaper is hard, because of the low volumes produced. I have ten months to excuse the high price to my self. This is a great overview of what I think are the important first impressions for a laptop! I have an early framework 13” model, and they hit the nail on the head with it considering what they were trying to achieve (price, modularity, form). The 16” doesn’t seem to have succeeded as much. I’m hoping in future revisions they’ll make necessary changes to fill the shoes they laid out for themselves.

I've been living with my 16 for a few months now as well--and I can say that pretty much all of your nits align with my experience. If Framework offered a larger trackpad and a keyboard with dedicated navkeys (even if it precluded the numpad), I'd buy them in a heartbeat. I've also found the same fit & finish issues with the spacers. Larger input modules that fill the deck without the need for spacers might moot this. Hopefully either Framework or a 3rd party steps up to the plate with a solution. In the meantime, it's moderately annoying but workable. I didn't buy the expansion bay module so I can't comment on that one. The price of the laptop was a bit of a stretch for me, but if it really is my last laptop ever, it will have been worth it.

Odd about the SSD, the 2230 is the secondary storage and the 2280 is the primary when configuring at purchase. What type connector is on the modules? It's interesting that you can put different connection types in any of the slots for the most part, Ethernet, hdmi, usb, work on the same ports.

Thanks for the review! So glad I cancelled my batch 2 order. At this price point, this laptop is simply not worth it and the only reason to buy this is because you support the FW mission statement. However, even that is somewhat problematic when you can get Thinkpads and HP Elitebooks that are equally user repairable with available components and official tutorials but with better build quality. I even believe LTT did a video on the high user reparability of the Elitebook 845 G9. But the FW 16 is a gen 1 product and can only get better. Looking forward to more of your videos as well as seeing how FW expands on this concept moving forward! Nice job CJ as always!!!

I'm hoping they solve the problems with fitment and finish by the time they ship my Batch 4 order. Still, the main reason for ordering it is the repairability for a workstation/gaming class computer. Every laptop I've had that wasn't a full CNC metal chasis has had hinge failure. I suspect that the framework will *also* have hinge failure. It is inevitable on a workstation/gaming class computer due to the thermal envelope reducing plastic lifespan. I have heard so many: "This never happened to my dell/lenovo/hp/etc." but again, most people aren't doing workstation class work with a business/consumer laptop. Its all about the use case. I have been known to have multiple laptops going for 14+ hours a day for multiple days while on the road. We will see if this meets the needs. But at least with this I know that a hinge failure likely isn't going to damage the main board and user-available replacement components exist. I am not expecting it to be inexpensive to repair, but I am expecting to be able to repair it before further damage happens. I keep my computers until they die. I'm hoping this one might last until I die - even if it is the "Laptop of Theseus".

I hope they succeed,. I'd consider buying one. I just don't need a laptop. Love the concept though, I'm all for easily swappable parts, QMK rgb keyboard/pad, open source etc. i think it's mainly..will they still be around in 10-15+ years? If I'm ever in the market for a new laptop, I'll highly consider this. The most intensive thing I'd do is music production, which 64gb of RAM and upgraded CPU would handle fine I'm sure. Could care less about gaming and don't need editing 4K video files. Performance may be a little lackluster when compared to similar price point alternatives, but when everything else is considered... you're not just paying for the product.. You're paying to have it YOUR way and be able to REPAIR/REPLACE, which is worth the extra money imo. I get it's not for everyone, but it looks good for me.

The concept is mildly reminiscent of the Sandbenders laptops in William Gibson's _Idoru_. These were highly customized/individualized machines with a recycled chassis and DIY components: "And once you had the case, when the manufacturer brought out a new model, well, if the electronics were any better, you just pulled the old ones out and put the new ones in your case. So you still had the same object, just with better functions." I doubt the Idoru copyright holders would go for it, but if Framework takes off i wonder if they might co-brand a Sandbenders model... or some 3rd party can do it. i have no idea if the Framework (batch 11) will save me money or create less e-waste over time (maybe chassis will get "old" and I'll want a whole new system, or maybe the easy upgrades will incentivize more incremental upgrades over time creating more e-waste).

Well i found this interesting just got no usecase for it right now sadly even though i like its modularity.. one of the reasons is that i dont need a powerful laptop right now.. it mainly needs to be a mobile camera and storage/ Display Device for my digital files while on the go. What mightve still sold this to me would ve been a 10G and 5g Option on the ethernet module, because i am really looking for a notebook with one of those so i dont need to use dongles for those ... speaking of the ethernet adapter: I am also saddened that it sticks out wich makes it smarter to transport that separately.

Its their first laptop in bigger laptops (although I would still love to see them enter 17.3 arena where thicker laptops are more acceptable, and with ample space I would hope for ample internal IO. For me that's party breaker, only 2 m.2 slots. Suprisingly for my priorities, issues you found aren't that big of a deal (for me, personally) if only it had more IO, which is big problem for me.

But how long can you guarantee that will last you?
@ajasen
@ajasen 3 месяца назад
@@theninjascientist689 good question. If it's finances only, is it better to spend more now on a framework for potential savings down the line, vs invest/save the cost difference now and get a full upgraded system later. Also this comparison is affected by wear and tear on the screen and chassis of the Framework, and maybe you won't be happy with it at upgrade time. I'll like there not to be so much e-waste with my consumption habits, which is why I bought this machine (batch 11), but... it's marginal... at upgrade time there will still be e-waste, just less of it. And then with a lower price point and greater incentive to make incremental upgrades over time it's an open question whether framework owners would make *more* e-waste over time than if those same people had bought less upgradable machines and waited longer to go all-in in a full upgrade. In short it's more of an emotional buy for me... I like supporting a new design, but I'm just buying good feels (which is fine, we do that all the time), it's not backed up by financial or environmental data.
@2.Plus.2.Equals.5
@2.Plus.2.Equals.5 20 дней назад
The whole "but you can buy this for that much" point just doesn't compare. Can that 4080 be taken out and replaced when they're obsolete/broken? Can you program/swap the keyboard using QMK? Can you choose which ports your laptop comes with? Is it easily repairable? While I admit it is a bit pricey, innovation and doing things differently comes at a cost. Research and development are where the money is, you're not just paying for the product that'll be tossed out in a few years. I hope they succeed and I'd definitely consider buying one. People spend $1,500 on a graphics card to play Minecraft but a $2,500 laptop is considered too much? Spec wise it's still pretty decent considering not everyone needs to edit 4K videos in Premiere or play Cyberpunk streaming to your 4K TV.

Oooft, the bezel pinching on the screen and the little corner jutting up on the spacer is yikes. I'll need to get myself some fine sandpaper just in case for when mine arrives. It's definitely some additional QA steps they could do on the floor for those problems.

Now I wonder who that reviewer is, lol. I can see one can make points without price being involved but the issues with a product can be lessened by a lower price. And one can view something as the better product but because of the price something worse can be the better value. Anyway nice to see all the extra parts you also got, so you can go more in depth.

I hope if Framework listens to You really tell them all the world now moving to 14" as the king of sizes in terms of performance and portability. So, I hope they rethink at the idea of the 13" and make it 14" with the option of HS AMD processors or even Intel.

I'm a bit disappointed that the usb slots are right in the middle of the sites. At the top would be better to make cables, usb-sticks etc. further away from you and a potential use of a bluetooth mouse. fans should only be at the back where the expansion module is.

Imagine if our display screens has PCI slot where we can attach multiple GPUs, wouldn't that free our laptops & desktops from having discreet GPU? It is graphic processing power on demand.

It’s a software switch and it’s automatic. The system runs on the iGPU until a program is launched that requires the discrete graphics. You can also disable the 7700s in the Radeon software.

Regarding whether price is important for a review - I kind of land somewhere in the middle. A product is either good or bad, and separately, is priced too high, too low (this _can_ be a problem) or just right. Another aspect to Framework is that the price to performance should be at least within a reasonable margin of the competition, but I think a full half of the value of the laptop is the design philosophy, component interchange and repairability.
@trowawayacc

However. This laptop can be boughy piece by piece. The company has an onlune outlet. Etc. You cannot just say it cost too much. Their modularity lessens this argument. I hope othrr companies take notice and start making a std for all laptops like on pc.

The main concern is the screen pinching for me because if the screen is already pinched some shock or vibration while traveling can damage the screen as LCD screens are really fragile and that would end up a expensive mistake. Since this is laptop it is expected it will be carried around and some shock or vibration will happen. Fit and finish also should've been better for laptop that costs that much. Users shouldn't be scraping their hands on the modules and the difference in color is also something that should be addressed as it's not a good look. Framework has good idea but the execution is lacking especially considering the price.

I compared the diy version vs the prebuilt and it doesn't save you that much money going with the diy option prebuilt: 2128$ 7840hs 16 gbs 5600 (2x8) 512 gb ssd with windows home 7700s numpad power adapter 2 usbc modules 3 usba modules 1 headphone jack module DIY version: 1961$ 7840hs 7700s numpad power adapter 2 usbc modules 3 usba modules 1 headphone jack module 2128-1961 = 167 You basically get 167 to make up the difference in ram, ssd and operating system. a 16 gb stick of 5600 ram is about 60$ (on amazon, the ram sold by framework is 80$) ssd cost will depend on your model but you're left with 107$ left for the ssd and operating system. if you're a windows user and don't want to use a grey market key, The prebuilt option is more compelling.

I got 32 GB of Memory for $99 and 5 TB of storage for $320, Windows 11 Pro has been basically free for years now as you can use it without activation with zero problems. I only activate Windows if I'm using it on a system where it will be the only operating system in used. Like on my gaming PC.

@@ElevatedSystems sorry my comment wasn't targeted for your configuration, more so for casual users, who don't need all those upgrades. Just out of curiosity I'll do a cost comparison for the overkill specked prebuilt So 420$ for upgrades 2161$ 7940hs 32 gbs 5600 5 tbs ssd(s) 7700s numpad power adapter 2 usbc 3 usba 1 headphone jack 2161+420=2581 Total cost of DIY (not including windows license) 2581$ 2518$ Prebuilt 7940hs 32 gbs 5600 1 tbs ssd(s) 7700s numpad power adapter 2 usbc 3 usba 1 headphone jack a remainder of 63$ for a 4 tb ssd (assuming the included ssd in the framework prebuilt is a 2230) you save 161$ or more going with the diy version. so it makes perfect sense for you to go diy.

I love the idea of swapping components i had tons of Thinkpads over the year and repaired them 1000 times. However. You buy this laptop for 2500 and it might last you for 10 years or more, however a macbook will cost aroundthe same and will last the same time, feeling much more premium from the start and with huge benefit to use FCPX or Logic, which are a bargain if you are not overly pro. Ok i don't want to rise polemics about which one is better because none is better, but if you want to charge the price of macbook make it the same quality. Of course if your mb battery or screen dies you are in a huge trouble i acknowledge that
@trowawayacc

Mac book cannot choose between opersting systems. It has some design flaws in its electrical components that garantee failure and limit repairability. So you can give money to a company aiming to improve or buy a status simbol. Dont matter which you choos be happy with what you get. 😊

I think future upgrades besides memory and ssd are pointless. This thing will be even more dated in 4 years so upgrade to gpu or cpu will make even less financial sense down the road, also you can argue that you pay upfront the true upgrade costs when comparing it to a non upgradable machine.

2716 USD, with that fit and finish, lmao. Get yourself a Thinkpad P16s at equivalent specs for HALF the price. It'll be cheaper to literally buy a new one in 3 years bringing you to the cost of a single framework (that will cost you the price of yet another P16s to upgrade!). And the fact that Lenovo sells thinkpad batteries that are drop-in 5 minute replacements for years makes this useless for me.

While I'm sure you will get more bang for your buck with Lenovo, you will also be purchasing a product from a company that has this track record: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lenovo#Security_and_privacy_incidents And has this policy towards repair and upradeability: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Ahw1cppZi-g.htmlsi=oW2QkcHybn4VWx26 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-U2k9D81fbpA.htmlsi=RFqxFFDOdWu_VWJq

@@peterscott8747 while the first one is definetely a concern, the second is... not really. Again, it costs HALF as much, so you can completely destroy your thinkpad in 2-3 years, buy a new one and have couple of more years with it. Like, if the question was about 200-500 bucks difference, then sure, it's a good price to pay for repairability. But TWICE? That's... inadequate. Like, sure, some enthusiasts will buy it, but a regular customer? Never 13 was a good value product, this one is just..strange.

All things considered, i would say that while framework 13 is unquestionably a successful product, this one is... Less obvious choice 13 really made me understand that companies bullshit us when they say their products need to be unrepairable to be refined. 16 looks really messy
