Hey! It's Amanda- Sorry about the lack of fun music! We have a very strict data wiping policy so we could only send things that we confirmed were wiped. Hope you enjoy the nuggets and thank you, on behalf of all of us at Free Geek Twin Cities, for shouting us out and for the generous donation!!
I was a volunteer liquidator at Computer Reset in Dallas TX, a huge warehouse full of vintage computers. Part of the cleanup was assisted by the wonderful people at Free Geek, and I can't tell y'all how wonderful those people are! I even still have the free shirt they handed out to all of us one day, so happy to have had a chance to work with these guys and gals!
I'd double check the Eee PC. There could be a possible chance of it still working. Sometimes when something takes too much power from a port on a mainboard, it will render a lot of things unusable. I had some external hard drive mounts that would sap a lot of power from my ports on my desktop, and all my peripherals would just quit working.
Shoutout to Free Geek out here in Portland, Oregon! I used to volunteer there and learned to build my own PC from them. Great guys. Super happy to see you partnered with your local location.
If by Local you mean on a different Continent then you'd be right. There are no Free Geeks outside of North America, and our boi Wade here is in Australia
That USB A to USB A is actually dangerous. Like it could fry the USB port and in your case it somehow killed all mouse function (if it was it's fault).
this type of cable can actually be dangerous when trying to connect two pcs together, especially when both are on unisolated power. connecting a nugget to a laptop with this should be fine.
I was about to comment that. It technically isn't even a "USB cable" since a cable with the same connector on both sides is not compliant with the USB standards. It's okay for USB-C because it finally allows for power going in both directions and the devices negotiating voltages between each other so that neither one gets fried.
I suspect the touchpad is over internal USB and the male to male did at least crash it. A powercycle could have released it, not sure if dank tried that.
I used to donate all my old electronics to Free Geek in Vancouver, Canada. They permanently closed in November of 2022 here and I was sad to see them go. It was a very nice non-profit and seeing this video was amazing
I love how when he opens the laptop it’s playing aging wheels. One of the best car channels on RU-vid along side Garbage time because both are just regular people working on cars. With a great personality that makes you stay.
I've found that my subscriptions all tend to watch each other. I wouldn't be at all surprised if it turned out he also watched Technology Connections, Regular Car Reviews, bigclive etc.
Hey there, my name is Will and I work on iPods at Free Geek! Your videos inspired me to work more on iPods and learn how to fix them and now I’ve made multiple custom iPods that have sold at Free Geek. Thank you for this amazing shoutout and for your very generous donation ❤
Im convinced Dank is an SCP. He is an unlimited warehouse of random mp3 players and technology and it is displayed via constant video fees on his RU-vid channel. He is an enigma.
@@servissop151 they are pretty hefty to repair, the engines usually are the most expensive ones since you need someone to make custom parts for it, it's an antique V8 after all.
Free geek is amazing. Many a seasons of scrapyard wars would not have been possible without this. Scrapyard wars by LTT may be my favorite series on RU-vid.
Free Geek seem like a good bunch. Refurbishing old electronics and reducing e-waste is really commendable. And Nugget Dips are always a delight to witness. Thanks for the video mate!
I live near the Twin Cities one, they're proper sick. Super cheap parts, laptops well under market rate, and they hook up students with desktop+monitor+keyboard+mouse for very very cheap. Plus they took my old server for free, which will probably be sold to some teenage who wants to host some stuff. Super cool org and great to work with. Good folks out there.
@@nomms I wish I could volunteer, honestly, fidling with tech is neat and their goal is important to me. But I'm in a completely different country, wish we had an organization like them.
It gets even better you can volunteer and after 24 hours of volunteering you get to choose a free computer! They also teach computer repair on site. It's crazy what they are doing.
I have a working one of those zen mosaics, sometimes they need to be manually reset by pressing a small button on the side with a ballpoint pen or something. Loved that nugget, used all through high school.
I'm born and raised in Vancouver. I miss Free Geek I used to do volunteer work down there quite regularly. I bought alot of my peripherals second hand from them. It was quite sad but not very surprising when they shutdown. Also: Not totally related but a company I worked for when I worked abatement was located right next to the Linus Media Group building out in Surrey.
I love Freegeek. They're just across town from where I'm living now, and my college does a lot of work with them. I genuinely am glad that they exist and do so much for the community, and it's also really cool that they reached out to you. Thank you for both sharing this video and the laughs (and sobs, rip EEPC) and also helping spread their message and goal, and just awareness of them in general. Love from the Twin Cities~!
I legit had thoughts about a modern flash-based cassette player recently, like if Spotify wanted to do some weird gimmick release along the lines of their Car Thing, they could release the Tape Thing that lets you load playlists from Spotify to the cassette. Can't wait to see a full video about that Duo Digisette.
anybody with a mission to save old electronics gets an instant seal of approval from me and the fact these people seem friendly as well is an added bonus
That h120 is actually frickin sick btw... It's got optical in and out! You can just chuck a mini toslink adapter in the line sockets. Practically hifi.
The zen MP3 player was a flash to the past, I remember having one as a kid and that nugget was a beast, it survived every drop and the battery lasted for what felt like forever.
That Star Tac hit me in the feels. A guy I knew had one but it was way out of my budget back then. I think SanDisk is a good entry level nugget to start your MP3 life.
My Dad had one - it was his second-ever cell phone after ditching the "bag" phone he bought in 1994-ish. The Star Tac was a durable little thing - his STILL holds a charge and works fine all these years later, even if it can't pick up modern cell signals.
The Sandisk Sansa support RockBox and have pretty good audio output. Quality can surely compete with iPods. But they are small and the displays obviously.
Yeah I definitely understand holding on to some of this old stuff. My grandpa recently just gave me his old Sony tape player and it was like a big one from the '70s where it would use giant reels a tape that you would have to string through and then onto another reel. And it works as a very good amp since it can take an aux input. You can pretty much plug anything into it and the lid speakers that came with definitely can crank it
So wild seeing a local connection appear on your channel. Been enjoying your content for a long time now and this video was a great reward after digging out from our most recent snowstorm. Cheers from chilly Minnesooota!
Hahaha imagining someone on the Free Geek data sanitation team putting scarlet fire on that nugget. They know what they're doing! also yeah, FG always wipes the data on everything. Don't ask me how I know that
Dank this is my birthday today and marks the 3rd year of me watching your channel I've watched these videos through thick and thin I just wanted to say thank you for these fantastic videos
Holy crap I remember the little Dell nugget! My mom had one and used it for years before finally getting an iPod. I'm sure if I dug around my parents house long enough I would find it.
holy shit 5:08 a creative zen mozaic!!! finally representation of my daily driver nugget on the channel… love it to death even if it has a bit less storage than i’d like
Wow that Dell brings back memories. A good friend of mine growing up had one - I'd never seen another one before or since, but we spent many hours enjoying music off that thing.
Thank God, you put the nugget music on I thought for sure you were going to forget it’s my favorite part of the lucky nugget dip when I hear that music keep up the good work my man💪
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a nugget nuggety enough to not only have some janky connection, but to require a double male-ended USB-A connector, whilst simultaneously having enough storage to still be somewhat usable today
Well, "usable" outside of the fact that the original generation of double-male USB-A designs would fry USB boards because there was no power limitation. Or, as FreeGeek aptly put it; the demons inside it.
I can't get enough of these videos! Be it about headphones (favorite segments), nuggets (second favorite), or just anything music related (tied with first)! So glad youtube randomly suggested your channel a few weeks ago.
Those Philips GoGear MP3 players are damn near indestructible. I have a slightly different model and have been using it for 21 years now. It has literally been through hell and high water. The battery held a good charge up until it started ballooning in 2019 and after removing it the device still works great plugged into my car's USB port. The sheer resilience of those nuggets would give a Nokia 3310 a run for it's money.
Always a good day when there's a nugget dip. Love hearing the microphon e's in these ol' things, as well as your crazy stories. Thanks for the 14 minutes of fun, Danksy.
The Eee PC might not be dead. Try rebooting it without the Jukebox and see if you can get the mouse working. You might also need to use the power plug after all, so it doesn't pull too much load through the USB port. That can cause wonk on some older laptops.
They are and aren’t, at least here in its hometown they will overprice things to an insane degree if they know they can, there’s a free geek close to a good will and I have found better working electronics for cheaper at good will than free geek trying to sell a broken Sony recover and amp. But the people that work there are usually really cool!
Yeah, the closest Free Geek to me (at least without crossing the border) is the one in Toronto as well. The only kind of computer I can afford is "old" so I'd welcome a Free Geek in Ottawa.
3:03 Macintosh poisoning shows, he can't use a computer without a mouse Also, you have to exit out of the dialogue before it will try to install a device.
