Funky good times on my fretless Cortex bass with some freestyle grooves with heavy sliding, lobster claw plucking, tapping and melodic fun with an OC-2 octaver higher up the neck. I’m playing a Swiss Cortex bass, fretless Napoleon deluxe model, with an epoxied maple fingerboard, walnut body and spalted maple top. It’s got a single Nordstrand dual coil pickup with 2 band eq, seperate bridge per string and position markers at the top, amazing work by luthier Paul Lairat and Pierre Camilleri. It’s strung up with Ernie Ball Super Slinkys, I used a Boss OC-2 Octaver, Darkglass Hyper Luminal compressor and a Rodenberg 707b booster, recorded straight into my Focusrite pro 24 audio interface into Cubase. Drums were made with Korg midi pads and Addictive Drums, mastering was done with Ozone 4.
In these compositions I choose to approach intonation freely, it’s not my intent to play perfect within the 12 note perspective, I like the tension, melancholy and dissonance between fretless notes. Many cultures have richly explored this, there’s a lot of good stuff out there. Yes I do take a different approach when playing with other melodic instruments, but to me these fretless solo pieces are way too fun to just colour between the lines, for good reason this is called a Lab!
Thanks for watching, more in the works!
