The Freeheel Life 2: Hippies Punx & Misfits 

Shout out to Voile. Both for sponsoring your film and for being Voile. The film is beautiful, with lots of great skiing, but I was kinda hoping for more little more history. I started free heeling in the winter of 1987-88. I was in Park City, Utah, so Voile was right down the road in Salt Lake. My first set up was a pair of Fabiano single leather lace up three pin boots, a pair of state of the art 200cm Karhu Extremes (the red ones), and naturally, Voile bindings with Voile plates. The Voile plate was a brilliant innovation. Simple, cheap, and effective, it gave a leather boot a whole new level of control authority over the rear ski, which led to the quick evolution of a more aggressive technique that took full advantage of that added control. I skied in leather boots on Voile bindings with plates until Black Diamond released the Terminator all plastic tele boot around 1991. They offered me a pair cheap if I would give them some feed back. I was fine with my set up, except my boots were getting a little ragged, so I gave the Terminators a try. Not surprisingly, I had lost lots of subtle input from the soles of my feet and range of motion, and I broke a couple of buckles right off the bat. I was not impressed. They were heavy, uncomfortable, and did not perform as well for me as my leather boots with simple Voile plates. But they did offer some significant advantages, and were the future. I decided to stick with them, and adapted my technique a to make the most of their advantages. A little less Fred Astaire, a little more Hammer Time. The Voile plate wasn't around long, but it was the best thing going in its time, and is a part of the history of the evolution of telemark equipment and technique worth mentioning. Doug Robinson is a badass, I had no idea that he was a tele skier until the first time I watched this video. Must have come in handy for all of that high Sierra alpine rock climbing he's enjoyed.

I really enjoyed watching this. Man I can't wait to get into the backcountry this season.

Hippies, Punx and Misfits.... Why do people always have to create these little clubs they want to be part of? Telemark has been around forever, it's an awesome way of skiing and when you get the rhythm right, you're dancing on the snow. It's pure bliss. But anyone can do it, office clerks included. Been telemarking most of my life, love it, you can keep your little subculture.
