ABOUT ME
Welcome to the Freelance Life! I'm Jen - A Latinx mom of 2, based out of Chicago. Despite hardships growing up, I attended art school as a first generation student. With a career journey in fashion, design, illustration & digital media, I've come to merge my creative passions into the work I do as a freelancer and teacher . I've had to learn a lot over the years as a creative adding in video production to my arsenal during my time running Halfstack Magazine (you can see past videos on this channel still). I have a BA with a focus in Fashion, Design & Production. I graduated from Benedictine University's MBA graduate program focused in Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management in 2011.
When I am not freelancing or creating, I can be found teaching in the fashion departments at local universities and colleges in the Chicagoland area as well as on Skillshare! I look to inspire others as much as I look to be inspired! Let's create something great together!

Excellent video, thank you for the trend summary! I forever love tropical paradise vibes, so I'm happy it's continuing to show up! And amen, Jen! I am SO happy you talked about the important of respectfully ackowledging folk art influences and honoring them instead of appropriating them. As someone with South Asian background, I cannot tell you the frustration when I see very distinct cultural motifs/elements used with no context and sometimes within disrespectful and incorrect contexts. There ARE so many gorgeous cultures and traditions in the world we can learn from and appreciate, but there ARE ways to be inspired from them in a respectful way :-)

Thank you so much! Yes, I think it is so important! It really can be frustrating - I saw it a lot during my time working directly in the fashion industry - time and time again - now that more and more people are becoming more aware they are holding businesses accountable. I see this in everything from appropriation to performative ally ship to sustainability and transparency - people want to buy from brands who are making a conscious effort. I think it can be tone deaf to create a line of say south East Asian inspired textiles like you mentioned but then to be mistreating their south East Asian manufacturing employees. It's important to see accountability across the board for me nowadays - especially cause I know what is up and my history working in the industry. Have you see the True Cost of Fashion?? It's a great documentary! They don't talk much about the appropriation issues we see but a lot about sustainability and the impact of brands on local economies in different countries. As well as the Rana Plaza tragedy. I think I might do a video on this in the future as I think it's such an interesting topic and something I have a past connection to. Thanks again for your comment! I'm so glad to have people here interested in this space to talk about these things :)!

Hi. Your videos are wonderful. I was a fashion designer in NYC ages ago and did a lot of surface prints hand painting with gouache! (as CAD was being introduced) It’s fun seeing you incorporate runway looks with your trends. I’m new on Affinity Designer and struggling with vector design. Could you do more Affinity tutorials please? It would be awesome. Cheers, Sarah

Hi Sarah! Thanks so much for the comment! I appreciate the support. Sounds like you have some amazing experience - NYC is such a great city! I have quite a few Affinity tutorials scheduled for the channel this year - including vectorizing and surface pattern design work - So, stay tuned! If there is anything in particular that you are hoping to learn - just let me know and I will add it to my schedule. - Jen

Hey can you tell me what softwares are used to create these patterns like the paisleys one or the one which are trendy now day that relaistic floral patterns?
@TheCreativeStudio1
@TheCreativeStudio1 3 года назад
Hi Aliya - many of the realistic florals are often hand drawn and then the repeat is digitized colored and created in software like photoshop or even procreate or affinity photo. Paisleys on the other hand can be created with a vector software like Affinity Designer or Adobe illustrator - here’s a good article of an artist that does intricate work like this - affinityspotlight.com/article/mr-paisley-designing-intricate-patterns-for-high-end-brands/
