My favorite thing about this, is in a blooper, MJF kept saying doc, doc like he was on the BTTF set. He caught himself and just laughed.

Jeffrey Combs is UNHINGED in this movie and I love every second of it

Fun Fact: The character of Hiles was written as a parody of the Drill Sergeant from Full Metal Jacket, with Peter Jackson assuming they would get a local actor from New Zealand to play the role. However, they approached R. Lee Ermey himself and he accepted.

The whole movie is really about Frank accepting his wife's death and moving on, I think he has plenty of personality and a great character arc. The state of his house at the begining is a metaphor of his own life, that's why he doesn't want to abbandon it but he doesn't take care of it either. In the end, he builds a new house.

Another really interesting fact from this movie is: Michael J. Fox performed many of his own stunts in the film. Ironically, he broke his foot by a simple fall while filming in the forest at night. Sir Peter Jackson said Fox's injury was actually a blessing in disguise, because it allowed him to work on the script some more, and edit some of the film's scenes, while Fox recovered for a week.

I love how this film never lets go of the gas and always tried to keep you engaged and entertained.

What's sad about the Judge is originally the Judge did not vanish from the film after the museum scene. More scenes were shot of the character after he is cut in half, including him crawling around on his hands in the museum, Frank meeting him during the cemetery battle in which he would help Frank fight the Reaper, after which he remarks 'Got to hand it to you Frank, you've defeated Death himself!' and a appearance at the end where he and Rustler the Dog say goodbye to Frank and head out west. These scenes were cut due to pacing reasons and were not added back in for the director's cut due to insufficient funds to properly finish the effects, but can be viewed on the deleted scenes section of the making of documentary.

Came for the Frighteners review, stayed for the love letter to Jeffrey Combs. 😂 He's always amazing in everything I've ever seen him in.

Executive Meddling: The film was originally intended to open close to Halloween, but Universal was so impressed with the rough cut of the film that they pushed up the release to July 19, 1996 (against Peter Jackson's wishes) as they didn't have anything opening that month. The choice of date (less than three weeks after Independence Day opened, combined with the Atlanta Summer Olympics starting that day) was considered by Jackson the main reason why the film flopped at the box office. Some good Executive Meddling came out of this movie. Jackson making this movie for only $26 million (with the incredible effects done at his company Weta Digital) were what convinced studio heads that a large-scale production of The Lord of the Rings could be done without an exorbitant budget.

Jeffery Combs is fantastic. He has such a unique way of speaking. My favorite role of his was as Herbert West in the Re-Animator movies.

I genuinely like The Frighteners. It was a nice blend of classic Jackson and modern Jackson. I love all of the weirdo inconsistencies. He made a weird movie that can only be loved as a weird movie.

Jeffrey Combs in this...oh yes, I believe that he's one of the very best examples of an actor who can play different degrees of insane. Even better when you hear Combs's actual voice doesn't sound like the voice he uses, he basically puts on a 'creepy'evil' voice for some of his characters. Also yeah Robert Zemeckis DID do a Tales From The Crypt episode ('Yellow') and also Death Becomes Her was originally going to be one too (the theme from the show is in the trailer). And also we KNOW that Sgt Hartman ended up there after what happened to him. Still a much better Haunted Mansion than Eddie Murphy's one (and right up there with the Muppet one). Jeffrey Combs as mentioned...he is very much if Dale Cooper actually never recovered from the experience of being in the black lodge, he is an agent who very much got involved with various cults and it's all over his body....all the markings and scars, his body is a roadmap of pain. Chances are Mr Crocker was based on this character (as well as Eugene Levy in Splash). Slimer should be happy because Ghostbusters did get two movies that weren't reboots and also CarrotJuice would be glad to know that Beetlejuice is getting a sequel.

This was the perfect transition from "Dead Alive" Peter Jackson to "Lord of the Rings" Peter Jackson. Spooky and creepy but on a grand scale.

John Astin loved making this movie, so when Sean was offered LOTR he encouraged him to do it.

One of Michael J. Fox's best movies. Good humor and horror mixed.

As any Star Trek fan can tell you, Jeffrey Combs is a real treasure.

A horrifyingly underrated film

Jeffrey Combs is a god damned gem and does not get the kind of respect he deserves for his acting skills. The man does TV, movies, voicework, and all of it is absolutely top notch stuff. Enjoyed the review as always, great work dudes.

Honestly can we all just admit Rick Baker is the freaking legend of prosthetic makeup.

I still find it so impressive how much technical acts they were able to put in films and still make it look for the most part crispy and smooth i wish we saw that more from films now.

What i love most about the casting of Michael J. Fox was that no actor other than Michael J. Fox was considered for the role of Frank Bannister, that shows sticking to your guns and it paying off bigtime.

I do love that Jeffrey Combs basically voices this exact same character in Justice League: Unlimited as The Question, and he's one of the best things about the already fantastic series. And that's after having already been the Scarecrow in the New Batman Adventures, and his take is still bone-chilling to hear each time.

Jeff Combs is a treasure, whether he's on Star Trek as nearly every race in the show or a scary movie, or even this, he's always a delight.

I feel like this film is a great way to show people why we love Halloween and Horror so much but going over the edge on it.

Deleted Role: A character, the Gatekeeper, was deleted from the movie. He was supposed to be a 6-foot cherub and function as a sidekick to R. Lee Ermey's Hiles, but all remnants of him was removed completely from the movie when it was realized that his character, besides being superfluous, didn't really make a lick of sense within the universe of the movie. Divorced Installment: The film was originally going to be a Tales from the Crypt movie, but when the producers thought it had potential as its own story, it was reworked into one without any connection to that series.

I just hope and wish Michael J. Fox is know for more films besides the Back to the Future films because he made some really good films that people should really check out

I still feel like this is some of the best horror effects we've ever seen.

To quote the late great Norm Macdonald and something i'm sure Jeffrey Combs might be thinking about is "You ever lie for no reason at all? Just all of sudden, a big lie spills out of your evil head. Like a guy will come up to you, 'Hey, did you ever see that movie with Meryl Streep and a horse?' And you go, 'Yes.' In the back of your head, you're like, 'What in the hell am I lying about over here? I stand to gain nothing by this lie.''

I think might be one of the best films to blend Humor and Horror in a film, which is saying a lot

Any movie that calls back Full Metal Jacket is good in my book. I remember this from only seeing it close to when it released, and felt it was underrated then. Good to see this covered here.

Fun fact about Rob Zombie's version of The Munsters: He actually wanted to film it in black-and-white, but the studio said no, so he chose to go with cartoonishly bright colors instead.

Ahh yes, true nostalgia right here. I was small when this came out. So I was very confused as to whether I was supposed to laugh at this movie or be afraid of it. I’ve always look forward to the new Nostalgiaween intro every year since day one, and the Scooby-Doo one didn’t disappoint!

This was originally going to a Tales From The Crypt, but became its own movie Instead. It would have been the first TFTC movie to have a happy ending. The Director's Cut , which I have on Blu Ray, gives us more background on the different characters and how many ghosts Frank Bannister has encountered.

Turns out it was the Red M&M as the Devil this whole time.

I actually REALLY hope he talks about the Haunting of Hill House one of these years for Nostalgiaween. The Bent-Neck Lady reveal will be THE BEST TWIST in all of TV history. I'd say up there with R+L=J but like that wasn't really a REVEAL since we all knew it but the confirmation was still nice.

Have anyone notice that The Frighteners is Michael J. Fox's Last Live-Action film before or after Mars Attacks! And then after, he done some voice-acting in animated films and Stuart Little films before his official retirement due to Parkenson's Disease and he create his foundation for everyone who has the same disease as Michael has and he still continues his battle of his disease and still helping people and supporting sports, including his guest appearance on TV, Comic-Cons, radio and a videogame... My respect goes to Michael and for those who died of Parkenson's disease, my full respect goes out to their family, friends and loved ones...

I actually like this movie. And I also like this version of Don't Fear the Reaper. And at least we get to find out what happened to DI Hartman after his run in with Gomer Pyle.

Honestly this film has the perfect blend of 90's ness mixed with some great humor and horror, while also keeping you not bored and always on the edge of your seat for when something else is going to happen

Just watched this movie a couple of nights ago. I watch it every year around Halloween. One of my favorite and most underrated movies.

5:22 Funny that you talk about being disappointed w/ that particular effect and then reference Roger Ebert at 5:48, b/c even though he absolutely hated this film and gave it a one star rating, he still acknowledged that "anyone who appreciates special effects, computer animation or movie makeup will regard this movie with awe."

I only saw this film in my later years but it was worth the wait as it's definitely an underrated classic and I love the opening joke of this film probably being one of the few horror franchises that's never going to be rebooted and it's still hilarious 😂❤️👍

Holy crap! I actually saw this movie when I was a kid. I think it was my first introduction to the song Don't Fear the Reaper. Like I only remember the blanket thing and this song at the end lol. For some reason I remember the Michael J Fox's character being played by Matthew Broderick. So nostalgic.

Jeffery Combs is an underused actor, he was fantastic in Star Trek Deep Space Nine, as several different characters on the show, most often as Weyoun.

I still think this was the prequel to Big Fish we all wanted but didn't want to admit publicly.

I literally just picked this movie for my weekly movie night with friends. None of them had ever seen the film, and it didn't get stellar reviews from them. I still love it.

I love the Frighteners. Tis a classic. I saw this shortly before Jackson was announced for Lord of the Rings and my immediate thought was.. ooh.. that makes sense.

Honestly i feel like we sleep on Michael J. Fox a bit too much as a actor because he honestly made a lot of really good films and really could act when you gave him the right script to work with.

I absolutely loved it to the point that decades later the Mutton Birds cover of Don't fear the Reaper remains my ringtone of choice, sure the effects might be a bit ropey here and there but I've seen far worse in more recent stuff so I cut it some slack. This has also reminded me it's time to rewatch it again.

Knowing that some of the digital effects were done by a different company definitely helps explain this movie

I like how a lot of the effect they use in this film while yes not might be the best, but still hold up pretty well for the time this film came out.

I love how the living and the dead are posing as the Grim Reaper in this film.

I found this gem years ago. I enjoy a good horror-comedy and that's what I think this is. They're hard to get right. This one doesn't get everything right but it gets a lot right. I hope that director's cut really exists and shows up. I'd love to see it.

Jeffrey Combs is one of my favourite actors he was in a ton of Brian Yuzna movies like Re-Animator and From Beyond which are some of the best body horror movies ever made.

16:31 - I remember seeing this movie on TV for the first time and being spellbound by Jeffry Combs's entertainingly eccentric and creepy apparel and performance! He was also great in H.P. Lovecraft's Re-Animater and From Beyond!

Another really cool fact from this film is that Billy Jackson: Three-month-old son of Sir Peter Jackson was the levitated baby in this movie.

Knew i never should of taken that Flubber that was mixed with Posion Jellyfish and leftover Lobster tails that decomposed after the army ants munch on them like they we're a piece of Juicy Fruit that really weird Dr. that was also a Walrus gave me.

I love this movie, yes the SFX is really dated now, but it's still a great dark comedy with a horror element to it.. and it features MJF!!

I still think this might be one of the polarizing films i've heard people talk about.

Criminally underrated!!! Originally a Tales from the Crypt film along with From Dusk Till Dawn! Also Ray was in an episode of TLFTC starring Tate Donavan.

to be fair about that rob zombie comment, the munsters is mainly the way it is due to higher up interference. for instance it was meant to be a black and white film so rob zombie did the sets in a traditional manner of colors to make it look better in black and white (like to make the adams family house look better in the old live action series, the house was bright pink!). but studio said no to black and white so he kept he kept the black and white prepared set out of spite

This film has always been one my favorites, if only for the fact that when I saw it when I was younger, I never got to see the entirety of it in one sitting. Always had to watch it piecemeal whenever I stumbled on to it on tv and I didn't know what it was called for the longest time.

The fact that Mars Attacks was MJF's last feature movie, and Frighteners was his last lead role in a box office movie.... (not counting animated shit) I loved this movie. Also... kind of shocked Critic didn't mention this....

One of my all time favourite Michael J. Fox movies

A unique (yet somewhat standard) film for Michael J. Fox (though it would end up being his final "Live-action" leading film role as Parkinson's was beginning to take its toll; he would continue to do television and animated movies). Fox was also pretty unhappy during the making of this film as he was staying in New Zealand alone and feeling really homesick at the time (even offering to change Billy Jackson's diapers, as he was missing his own kids that much).

Honestly when they say Michael J. Fox can't act this is one of the films i look and say yeah he can act really well and when he's on his a game there's no one better

Personally I'll always see this as a underrated comedy horror. Sure it's not perfect and has flaws but I've always seen it as fun movie to watch.
