This is a very interesting plant, as you say, it is very easy to grow from seed, each year I get dozens of plants from the seeds that I get from mine, but it obviously needs to be pollinated, the fist year I pollinated mine with a small paintbrush, which was a success.

Yes, you are right, hand pollination seems to be needed for good pollination.

Thank you! This has been so helpful. I got my Albuca spiralis last summer and wasn’t sure what to do when it dropped its leaves in early spring. I’ve kept it on the dry side not knowing if I should water it or not; the bulb is still green and firm with a little offset forming. I know now to put it outdoors and not water it.

Thank you for the video! I live in California and out summer days are now hitting 100 to 105. I have the frizzle under a patio cover so bright light but still very hot. Do you recommend bringing inside? Should I continue to water once a month or not at all in summer? Thank you so much for any answers!

Ours are always with the top of the bulb just above the ground and we have grown them for a number of years. Our local succulent expert, also grows them like this, so for us, with the neck of the bulb above the ground

Ehi there! I have a question, since infos about this beautiful plant are quite rare :) I got one this summer and I kept watering it, as i didn't know it was dormancy period. I caused some root rot, but the bulb is still nice, firm and white. Do i put it back in soil? Do i wait for it to sprout? I removed almost all the roots, leaving just the healthy ones. Thanks a lot for any help and tip you can share! Have a nice day and a happy new year :)
@johnnyAGardening
@johnnyAGardening 3 года назад
Yes put it back into fairly dry soil, after a week to 10 days, water once and then dormancy over summer. Only a little water every 10 - 20 days. This is a plant that does not need much water, and needs to dry a little out between waterings. Happy New Year and Happy Gardening....

Hi John, I have a question. I live in Tucson, Arizona. Your summers and winters are opposite from me. What tips do you have for growing one of these in the United States?
@38harpstrings
@38harpstrings 4 года назад
Cathi Jones I live in the US too and understand the confusion. John talks about seasons rather than particular months, so the care instructions are the same for us in the northern hemisphere as they are for those in the southern hemisphere. The four seasons progress throughout the year in both hemispheres; they are just during different times during the calendar year. Albuca spiralis is native to the area around Cape Town, South Africa which has a Mediterranean climate. Wet winters, dry summers. It does its growing during the rainy winter season, etc. I hope that helps.
@johnnyAGardening
@johnnyAGardening 4 года назад
Hello Cathi, sorry for the delay. Our top tip is to grow them outdoors and give them a cold winter. NOT freezes and heavy frosts but cold. Also give them a hot summer, where you are, good morning sun and maybe protection from the hot afternoon sun. Good drainage, a little fertilizer once a year. So its the same as here, however your winters are a bit colder, you get down to around 39f (say 4c) sometimes lower, we get down to around 4 - 8c and do not get freezes. A little follow up video coming soon with luck. Happy gardening, stay safe and good luck with frizzle zizzle.

Hi John. I have a 5 yr old albuca spiralis, this will be my 2 winter with it. This yr its popped out and it has 7 growth points on one bulb. I'm not worried as it seems healthy but will it have flowers at each growth point?
@johnnyAGardening

Sorry for the delay in answering, You can get multiple flowers from the one bulb, never seen 7 though. We have a little follow up video coming soon.

Are these directions towards growing the frizzle sizzle outside? What about indoor around growing inside as a household plant?
@johnnyAGardening
@johnnyAGardening 4 года назад
Hello Nicole, if you are growing it as an indoor plant or outdoor plant you do need to treat the plant much the same way. Good light, warmth , not too much water , dry between waterings, and try to allow it to have a summer dormancy. It will benefit from a summer dormancy, so maybe you can give it a holiday outside over summer. Indoors and with moisture year round it tends not to go dormant, however in the long term this is not necessarily a good thing.

Hi! I bough my Albuca yesterday. That was the first one I saw in my life. Her branches are all dried and I have to change her pot. Do you suggest taking off the dried branches? Thank you!
@johnnyAGardening
@johnnyAGardening 3 года назад
We usually wait until they come away very easily when pulled, so try pulling them away gently and see if they come away from the bulb. However you can cut them back fairly low if you are re potting.

@johnnyAGardening 3 года назад
Very easy to germinate. We use ordinary potting mix, sift a little over the top, sow seeds on sifted layer and then sift a thin layer over the top. Keep moist in a warm position and they should germinate within ten days.... Will have a video on that very soon.

Two questions: 1) If there are multiple bulbs growing out of one pot, should I divide them? 2) Is it possible to kill my plant from too much dormancy? Two of my bulbs haven't grown any foliage since March, but the others have
@johnnyAGardening
@johnnyAGardening 4 года назад
You can divide them when in dormancy. As for too much dormancy, they tend to come out of dormancy when they are ready. It is interesting that two of our smaller offsets are putting on good new growth, the two larger ones are only just starting and thats around 3 weeks later than the small ones. I will try to make another video on dividing the bulbs ASAP.

I live in zone 6, and just purchased one to add to my collection. I planned on growing this plant indoors, can I do this and still allow it to go through a dormancy? I fear my winters get too harsh and will kill it
@johnnyAGardening
@johnnyAGardening 4 года назад
They are more difficult indoors than outdoors, however - You can grow them indoors, - it will need really good light and careful watering (don't over water). It also needs a period of cold during the winter (cold nights but not zone 6 cold), so just give it a rest from indoor heating at night . An enclosed patio would work well

johnny A hi there, I just received my Albuca Spiralis. I just finished potting it, and wanted to know if I should wait on watering it for a few days...or should I give it a drink now. It has been in shipping for a few days, so the foliage has slightly browned tips and is just a little slumped looking. Any tips would be greatly appreciated, thanks 🤗
@johnnyAGardening
@johnnyAGardening 4 года назад
@@andreavinacco8011 I would not worry about the brown tips, and would water it once now and then let the soil almost dry out before watering again . I would wait for 2 - 3 days if the root system looked damaged .

@johnnyAGardening

Best to hand pollinate to ensure seeds, use a small paint brush or brush, or similar to spread the pollen from one flower to the next and from stamen to stigma.

@johnnyAGardening
@johnnyAGardening 4 года назад
@@IsaValentinus OK, ... As the bulbs are shrinking, and have no foliage, you may be in trouble. I would repot them making sure they are not rotting. Keep them in as much light as possible and on the dry side. Don't fertilise them. They really need outdoors and dry over summer and in winter they need cold. Good light as well. But not heavy frosts and freezes. They also need a free draining potting mix. They only need water from autumn to spring, but still not soggy soil. So try repotting and if the bulbs are not rotting you have a chance.....Let us know.
@IsaValentinus
@IsaValentinus 4 года назад
johnny A okay 👌🏼 repotted, small compared to what they once were.. used to be pot-bursting size that needed separating. There is now 3 smallish with 1 tiny tiny new one :) few healthy roots on each, so now put them in the brightest sunniest window.
@johnnyAGardening
@johnnyAGardening 4 года назад
@@IsaValentinus OK. So let them settle in. Just a little water. They don't want to be dry, however not wet either. Maybe a little liquid seaweed fertiliser or similar in a week or two. With the window, remember that sun through windows can be very hot, so be careful that they are not to close if theis is the case.

How to pollinate?
@johnnyAGardening
@johnnyAGardening 4 года назад
Bees actually pollinated ours this year - However you can get more consistent pollination with a small paint brush, when the flowers are new brush the inside of one flower and then another and then back to the first an so on.
