I have had frizzle sizzle for three years and learned a lot about care. Because it springs from a bulb, I let it go dormant for three months during winter. Then in March I start watering and expose it to.indoor lights. Come May, outside and adjust it to more light gradually. Eventually full sun. I let it flower once and they are neat but the leaves lose their curl. So I let it grow without flowers. I divided it twice and love it! Such an unusual plant.

I've had my Frizzle Sizzle for a little over two years now, and I have never let it go dormant! She's flowered twice (maybe thrice?) in that time, but I never stopped watering. In fact, the only reason I watched this vid is because my bulb has split into two and I was trying to see if/how to repot the propogation.

I’ve had mine from you guys for almost a year and it’s done really well down here in south Florida. I have it in bonsai Jack’s on a south or west facing window, depending on the time of year. Hi.I've grown some frizzles from seed.I made the mistake when I went on holiday to prioritise water over light and the young plants lost their tight curls although they are happy and healthy apart from that. I now know to keep them in the sun.I was wondering at what age the frizzles first lose their leaves and become dormant? I'm hoping that one day they'll get their curls back.I live in NE England. Thank you.
@Mountaincrestgardens
@Mountaincrestgardens 10 месяцев назад
Well done! We don't have direct experience growing these from seed, but most people sow them about one year before the next dormancy season. After one year of growth, most seedling should have a decently sized bulb that can store enough energy to get them through dormancy.

I just bought my frizzle from MCG a few weeks ago. So it's still in it's cute little pot that it was sent in. I live in SW Florida. Two questions: one, it's August now....and it still looks good. Should I stop the watering? And two, how long can it stay in that little pot?
@annieschreck7938
@annieschreck7938 2 года назад
This is a tricky one. Succulent care in Florida's humidity is always a little different. Given that it's August and it looks like y'all are getting a good bit of rain and humidity, I don't believe your Frizzle Sizzle will enter full dormancy at this point. So I would go ahead and water infrequently, just be sure you have well-draining pot + soil. To prevent rot, only water when the soil is completely dry and the leaves start looking less perky. Also, I would try to re-pot into grittier soil within the next three weeks. I hope that helps!

Thank you for this video! Can I use bonsai soil?
@annieschreck7938
@annieschreck7938 3 года назад
The bonsai soils I'm familiar with are super gritty and fast-drying, with less organic matter than bagged cactus & succulent soils. So if you tend to be a more frequent waterer, bonsai soil could work fine. But if you prefer to go several weeks between waterings, a standard cactus & succulent soil will retain the right amount of water. If anyone has more experience planting succulents in bonsai soil though, I hope they weigh in!

Someone gave me a bulb in the spring, potted in a 4” pot. I put it outside in a spot that gets morning sun and gave it a little water maybe once a week. It finally started growing, in august. It’s about 3” now and pretty curly. Looks like it’s in a normal potting soil to me. Maybe I should water less.

Congratulations on getting it to root and sprout leaves. That's huge! And curly leaves is a good sign that it might not be getting overwatered.

I am in Texas. Our rainy season is now. Is hot and humid. How is this going to work? it already flowered and I am letting the foilage do its thing. I am not watering it as much, every 3 weeks or so, and very little. I had to bring it inside because last month it rained for 3 weeks straight. If I start watering it during winter I will run into cooler weather so do I just keep it inside under a grow light?
@annieschreck7938
@annieschreck7938 3 года назад
Great questions! Bringing it inside during rainstorms is fine, or under a covered area outdoors that's protected from rain. As for winter, it depends how cold your climate gets. Albuca spiralis can stay outdoors unless temps get down to freezing, in which case indoors on a sunny, south-facing window or under a grow light is your best bet.

Hi, Mine is flowring a little late and the spiral shoots drooping and turning brown. So everything seems to be as it should, my worry is that it's just happening at the wrong time of year. UK spring ends in May and mine is flowering now. Shall i just let it do it's thing? The flower shoot is developing nicely.
@Mountaincrestgardens
@Mountaincrestgardens Год назад
Sounds like you are all good! You've got a healthy plant so you can let the plant's behavior guide your care cycles, rather than the calendar. Once the flower dries, you can withhold water and let it enter dormancy until fall.

I’ve had my plant for 4 years now and this is the first year that it decided to get really long. We recently moved and I actually wonder if it’s mad that it’s lost it’s perfect sunlight spot. My worry is that it doesn’t stand up straight anymore, it’s stems are now hanging down over the pot and one of them actually broke because of this. How would you recommend that I fix her? Also I should mention when i mean long, she’s maximum 7 inches tall
@annieschreck7938
@annieschreck7938 2 года назад
Hmm tough to say without seeing the plant or knowing its growing conditions, but tall, weak growth that easily falls over is sometimes the sign of a plant stretching for more sunlight. Is it getting less sun than it used to?

Personally, in the summer all I change is that I stop watering my A. spiralis. I keep it in the same lighting and soil as the rest of the year. Some people choose to water it through the summer so that it does not go dormant or lose its leaves, but you run the risk of ending up with permanently straightened leaves. Hope that helps! Annie

I purchased one in a different city while on vacation, & it was super dry. So when I got home & bottom watered it about 3 days after I bought it, it seemed to turn to reddish tips, drooped & seemed like I overwatered it. I'm so confused! I'm in Texas, so of course it's super hot here. I probably shouldve watched this before I watered!
@annieschreck7938
@annieschreck7938 3 года назад
It can be so hard when you don't know how your new plant was cared for at the nursery and where it is in its dormancy cycle. If you see no squishy, black rot, you might be in the clear and can keep it dry through summer. But if not, I hope you try again!

Is there something a person needs to do to make it lose its leaves? Mine flowered about a month ago. It still hasn't lost its leaves. I only water it about once a week because I don't want it to die. And even then, I've only spray watered it.
@annieschreck7938
@annieschreck7938 3 года назад
Yes, you can cut back on water all together. I struggle withholding water too, but that's one of the ways your plant senses it's time to go dormant. Or you can keep watering through summer, but you risk straightened sizzle syndrome.
