Acknowledged by many as the greatest chess player of all time, Garry Kasparov has been marching to his own algorithm his whole life.
Born in Baku in 1963, Kasparov has taken on the greatest champions and won. And since retiring from the game, he has been involved in a political battle with one of the most powerful and controversial men alive - Vladimir Putin, the president of Russia.
Sir David Frost travels to Abu Dhabi to join Kasparov on his mission to promote chess in the Gulf. Kasparov shares his secrets of the game, discusses milestones in his life and expands on why chess should be compulsory in school curriculum. He even offers a few tips to some of the young chess players.

"It's the duty of every conscious citizen to protect civil liberties." -- Garry Kasparov i couldn't agree more. i was never a chess fan, but i did, and do, respect his ability. however, i AM a fan of Garry Kasparov the activist and author. along with author/journalist Masha Gessen, i find them both the most refreshing writers about Putin's Russia; they are neither fools nor fooled. when George W. Bush said that he looked into Putin's eyes and saw his soul, i believe that what he saw was a distorted reflection of what he wanted to see -- himself.

History down plays Karpov's strength as a player. Kasparov is generally considered the better player, but considering that in their 5 championship matches Karpov scored 19 wins, 21 losses, and 104 draws in 144 games. That seems too close to call Kasparov far superior player.

@aleksthegreat4130

Yea,they are pretty equal based of their achievements,as many of chess specialists consider,no way Garry is far superior,plus Karpov is 12 years older.
@hansmahr8627
@hansmahr8627 3 года назад
Though it's important to note that 5 of those Karpov wins were at the beginning of the 1984 match. At that time, Kasparov was not yet on Karpov's level. He was overconfident and only learned how to deal with Karpov during that match. Generally however I agree, people sadly undervalue Karpov because he never managed to beat Garry in a match. But his tournament record and his longevity at the top speak for themselves. One of the greatest of all time.

14:03 > _For 21 years Garry would remain the greatest chess player in the world, the longest ever period of any player, ever._ Emanuel Lasker was World Chess Champion for 27 consecutive years (1894‒1921).
@davidcopson5800
@davidcopson5800 5 лет назад
Yes, hardly defending his title because there was no compunction to do so. Lasker, through his inactivity, was eclipsed in being the world's strongest player during his own reign as champion. Being the strongest player and being world champion is not one and the same thing. Fischer was undoubtedly stronger than Spassky when he challenged the Russian for the world title in 1972.

Kasparov was not the longest reigning champion at 21 years, that would be Lasker at 27 years.
@davidcopson5800
@davidcopson5800 5 лет назад
He didn't say that. He said for 21 years Garry was the greatest chess player in the world. During Lasker's long reign, where he played very few matches to defend his title, he was periodically eclipsed in ranking by Capablanca and Rubinstein (chiefly due to inactivity). Garry played five matches against Karpov alone in just six years, as many matches as Lasker played during his time as world champion. There is also some legitimacy for stating that Steinitz was world champion for 28 years after his successful match against Anderssen in 1866. He lost the title to Lasker in 1894.

I do not hate Kasparov, I think he is a brillian and courageous man who fights for civil rights against Putin's police state. Fischer was a hero until he went completely insane - he was a very mentally ill man, even when he was young, and he became sicker and sicker when he retreated from the world after winning the world chess championship. He suffered from delusions of persecution.

I am not rought on him at all - I felt sorry for him. The guy literally went stark raving mad and wound up an exile from his own country, hounded by the feds, jailed in Japan for nearly a year. Fischer was crazy and he was his own worst enemy. I am not rough on him at all.

Hello my dear chessfans all over the world, i would like say something which leads to clearity of some false impressions about comparison between Kasparov and Fischer. First of all, I will clarify that B.Fischer was a real Hero as a Person in contrary to Kasparov, because Fischer had sacrified himself for justice and humanity. Second, Kasparov is according to his contradictory behavior an egoistic excentric and it seems that he has a possible schizophrenic disease which is clearly shown in his unsuccessfully past of graceless bad loosing games, that he had shown clearly to the world after bad loosings against Deep Blue, Kramnik, Anand and Karpov, that he accused every winner with something bad to neutralize his loosings to establish his superiority. Emanuel Lasker is greater than kasparov because Lasker was for 27years World Champion, kasparov was just for 14years Champion. Bobby Fischer was a real political Hero, because of his sacrificing life for humanity he was an example of civil couragious man which leaded to his Heroic end. In most of the games of kasperov, he has played the style of Fischer Magnificent alternative and initiative Chess strategy, which clearly Show us that kasperow wasnt an innovative Player in fact he was a bad loosing Imitator.

Thanks for your info, but r u trying to undermine Garry's achievement? Whether u consider him to be not as good as Fischer or Karpov or Lasker or not, it really doesn't matter. I think is his inspiration for younger players is what's important. Fischer had mental issues and was hiding away. Karpov wasn't an outspoken individual nor charismatic. Lasker wasn't even born in the 1900s, so come on, give the guy a break. We all have flaws yes including me and you most likely, I be the first to admit but we are all different.

I'm glad you took the time to think about and type out your comment. However, I think your perception of Bobby Fischer as a person (whom I am a huge fan of, chess-wise) would benefit greatly from watching "Bobby Fischer Against the World," the HBO documentary. In terms of your dismissal of Garry Kasparov, you seem to have made up your mind about this great player, regardless of any facts that I may present. I simply think you have been misinformed in regards to Kasparov's play style and his achievements.
@ckreuzer4001
@ckreuzer4001 10 лет назад
Your arguments are crap!!! How was Bobby Fischer a real political hero?? He was no hero. He was a racist and a nutter. Kasparov is the real hero. He risks his life protesting against the Putin regime. Bobby on the other hand went into excile and fired cheap shots from a distance. Kasporov is clearly a better person and based on records clearly a better player.
