Darren Lockyer and Wayne Bennett change the role of Full-Back or Number 1 in Rugby League. You Blues/NSW cannot recognise that, but us the fans who lived through that era knows the fact. The Best FULLBACK, the Pioneer of the extra 5/8 at the back, and later the BEST 5/8, number 6. ..... Mathew Johns you are a sorry loser.
Billy was great but I never thought he changed the fullback position. Lockyer did. He was the first genuine ball playing fullback. That's why Bennett switched him to a 6.
No idea how best fullback discussions always leave Lockyer out. Also, Slater gets the vote due to his ball playing ability, well I'm sorry but Lockyer's ball play was far superior.
Go back and look at Preston Campbell's Dally M run for the Sharks where he played Fullback, wing and halfs...... Unbelievable footy from a guy smaller than Alfie Langer.
I dont understand why they never give lockyer the credit he deserves, slater was a better runner but lockyer was the best fullback that plays as a 2nd 5/8, he was the one that changed the position into a 3rd playmaker, and slater developed that later into his career lockyer had it at the start.
They are giving slater credit for changing fullback into another playmaker. Lockyer also had long kicking game short kicking game and excellent at field goals and drop-outs. Also once alfi langer and Kevin walters retired, lockyer was the best player for broncos and Queensland was Queensland's best chance of attacking creativity against a really good nsw team our hopes for tries and wins were on lockyer without much support from the halves, was like that until Smith and Thurston showed up and half of lockyers career was over. Slater always had Smith, cronk, 5/8 lockyer, Thurston to play behind
Brett Stewart was a player with freakish ball skills as well. As a Manly fan, I'm glad to see Tommy Turbo developing this part of his game very well. Injuries played a massive part in Stewart's career, and sadly it looks like the same thing for Trbojevic.
Lockyer set the template, Billy was just faster. As wingers go, Brett Morris is always my first pick. One name that rates a mention is Kyle Feldt. He’s as diversely reliable as Morris, with the longevity to boot.
Not sure how far this goes back. We know Churchill is written into folklore. But Langlands will always be handed the 1. And you can tell by these comments there is already and disagreement. Not so with Langlands.
Great show and idea, the only thing I’d say is that there are now a lot of wingers who are like forwards and can’t go when grey need to…… balance required 👍
Matt Bowen changed the role! Added the playmaking role into it before Slater started doing it! Lockyer had a good kicking game but was still a wide runner at fullback!
Unbelievably good player. He won that many games for us with his ball skills, and some of his incredible/freakish passes. Also, defensively fantastic, esp for a guy his size. He had a great football brain.
What about setting defensive patterns and being the defensive general??? Locy would call the opposition play before they did... Slater only reacted. Darius is just lost 😂
I started watching NRL in 2008 and I didn’t understand anything, what is prop all I know is they big, all I understand was whoever wears number 1 Jersey is a striker. Not a keeper like in football. Brett Stewart was the best striker for me, very skillful with the ball, Billy Slater was also another striker. Melbourne Storm was very physical for me. So yes Brett Stewart for me.
Slater not even missed by his club replaced by 'Pappy'. Neither Slater or Lockyer will make the greatest 'ever'. However they probably both have the make the best QLD (although that's entirely up to the QLDers). So Lockyer has to be fullback, Slater has to be on the wing. The simple laws of deduction!
Stuff And that he’s in my top 5! Actually, he’s the best I’ve ever seen. No other fullback could score tries like Bowen! He’s highlights reels are better then all players! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZyY_ggsnNOY.html
Kenty as a writer is good. He is someone who understands almost everything about the politics and business part of the game BUT as a speaker or 'talker' he is boring to listen to.Very cringe! I would not pay to listen to him speak.
Slater was an ok passer. Half his passes went over the sideline. Slater by all means was never a ball playing fullback. Overrated and nothing revolutionary about his play. He was a traditional fullback if anything. IMO Bowen, Carmichael hunt, GI and Hayne were all better than Slater. They just didn’t have the privilege of playing beside their mates in the same position for 16 seasons. Call a spade a spade when Slater was injured it wasn’t really a worry to any team he played for. You could replace a Billy Slater you could t replace a Greg Inglis.
