Here's my footage of the pretty-much brand-new install at Petersfield Level Crossing next to Petersfield Station, a busy stop on the Portsmouth Direct Line. As of the time of filming, editing, and uploading this video, the crossing in this state has been open for only around four weeks, and it's now all ready for major re-signalling to take place at some point. The whole crossing has been re-surfaced, the 'double arrows' station sign repositioned, and the path in the corner by the signal box widened. Six new LED wigwags / road traffic lights have been brought in to replace ones just nine years old, with a pair in one corner being reconfigured to a 'bunk' set-up. The three on that side are also all tilted downwards slightly.
The barrier system in use here is the Alstom 'EBI Gate 630' system, with bespoke but approved barrier arms that are designed to break in a very certain way in the event of a collision, and these barriers lower very quickly mid-stroke. In typical Petersfield L/C fashion, loud alarms are still retained (albeit one fewer than before), and one has as fast a tone as ever, and 'Yodalarms' have been used here surprisingly. The renewal gives impressions of incompletion, as one pedestrian light is still bagged up awaiting commissioning, and the barrier cages are completed by wooden boards of all things!
The adjacent signal box remains in control of the crossing, as it has to stay until re-signalling due to what it controls and the automatic and user-worked crossings it supervises. This cannot all be changed overnight. When its time comes, it will thankfully remain but just be used for another purpose. A new signal at the London-end of the coast-bound platform is waiting to be switched on when the line is re-signalled, a much more convenient and proper way of turning trains back here should the need arise, but it is separated from the footbridge by a ghastly and unsightly green board. When the time comes, signalling and crossing operation (via CCTV) will be done from Basingstoke, and just south of Petersfield is also where the gigantic Wessex Rail Operations Centre will fringe with Havant's signalling centre and its axle counter territory.
These early evening videos feature six trains in total, some of which additional peak time services, but amazingly, all six were perfectly on-time serving this station!
