@@stellarhyme3 Yeah supporting actor. We're talking about a category. They should have one for comedic films, comedy performance. They only have short-subject cartoon comedy.
@@catherinec6485 What? He lost out to Heath Ledger's Joker. Was hardly robbed. As amazing as RDJ was in this film, he lost out to one of the best performances of the 2000s. Nobody was beating Heath Ledger for that award
@@jerodast In the beginning of the commentary, it's briefly acknowledged that he's RDJ but he stays in the black guy persona for most of it. He still refers to Ben Stiller and Jack Black by their real names. So, actually plays Kirk Lazarus who critiques his own work as Osiris while still in-character while he still knows he's RDJ. And when the character goes back to Australian, RDJ switches to that, and then he goes to full RDJ near the end. Layers upon layers.
I was laughing so hard with the rice farmer. As much as I imagine it would be, he somehow manages to nail how a white American actor, playing an Australian, playing a black dude, pretending to be a Chinese rice farmer would speak Mandarin.
He only got nominated, but considering he was up against Ledger's Joker and the fact that his role was so purely comedic, a nomination is a higher honor than it seems. It's rare for comedy roles in general, but even more rare when it's such a purely comedic role.
@@RtistiqSkubie that's just silly. Plenty of actors died and they didn't win a bunch of awards afterwards for their last performance. Then it happens once and it's 'oh he only won because he died'. No he won because that performance was goddamn brilliant. No matter if he's dead or not. And it's a shame he couldn't accept the Oscar himself. He's also not the only person who won for playing the Joker btw. And it wasn't the first time he was nominated either. RDJ was brilliant too but it's a comedic performance and they rarely win Oscars. That's just how it is. Doesn't have anything to do with Heath Ledger.
@@jackiedaytona7681 1000% percent. So many people miss that and it leaves me in stitches every time. The question though is he saying it to Jackson or Stiller? I initially thought Jackson because of Jackson's "what to YOU mean you people" comment (hilarious), but I think Downey may have been completely ignoring him and the 'huh' was meant for Stiller to attempt to solicit a response to Downey's question to Stiller. The best part is it works either way.
This movie honestly played a huge part in saving RDJ's career alongside Iron Man. Specifically, the fact that Downey managed to stay clean and scandal free two films in a row did a lot in convincing studios they could actually rely on him.
Apparently they called Stiller to find out how RDJ's work ethic was on set. Stiller said he was a dedicated to the work and RDJ was cleared for Iron Man
He definitely did lol, but Heath Ledger won it for his Joker performance. He definitely deserved to win, his version of Joker was awesome, but I think his untimely death was a big influence for his win.
I consider this up there with Blazing Saddles as one of the all time great Parody/satire films. Blazing Saddles critiqued and shed a light on the Racism of old West and distinct lack of Black Cowboys despite history showing that black people were a major part of the old west. While Tropic Thunder Criticized the Hollywood industry on nearly every level. As a black person,I never want to hear about RDJ having to apologize for this role. Any smart black person with a sense of humor sees what his role is Satirizing in Hollywood today with how they go about casting race and the glory seeking Pretentious Actors trying to win awards all the time. Tugg Speedman is the Arnolds/Stallone of the industry. Let me tell you when me and my brothers watched this for the first time we hadn't seen a trailer for it/or a single ad outside of a poster of it at our local Theater. When we saw the booty sweat ad and the following commercials we immediately knew we were in for something good. This might be Tom Cruise's most underrated role. Despite how goofy Les grossman is as a character, the fact is he is the Bob Iger/Kevin Fieges/ the Producers of the Industry who oversee all the money and rewards of these films when they get made. And word is Tom is planning on doing a Les Grossman Spin off film.
Considering a studio executive asked “what’s wrong with Julia Roberts playing Harriet Tubman?” And they casted Scarlet Johansen and Emma Stone to play asian women, Hollywood didn’t get the message. Lotta fans of this movie missed it too.
"... distint lack of Black Cowboys despite history showing that black people were a major part of the old west." When it is said with genuine truth in a genuine context warranting it, no issue. But when it's slathered in disingenuous revisionism, that's when we dive into the cesspool of ESG/DEI cultist crap. The Old West? It's a tale of white folks bulldozing over Natives. All that revisionism about the "major role" of Chinese, Spanish, or other ethnicities having entertaining and inspiring tall tale to tell? Spare me. They were about as significant as a speck of dust on a horse's ass. Yeah, sure, there are a few scattered tales and they are worth telling - ought to be told, but don't stretch it to claim they were 'major' part of the Wild West. They were side acts at best, not the headline. Trying to cram them into the spotlight just to meet some diversity checklist? Ridiculous. They were there, but 99% of the time, they were background noise, not the main event. And guess what, Wild West movies, the ones that are loved and that are the most entertaining, are the ones involving Cowboys duels, gang wars, Natives vs White Skins, legendary quick-draws, because these are the predominant and most notorious narratives and reality of these times. And it will never change. Because history, real history, is set. For eternity.
@@coltondavis7022 I disagree. That's an example of Hollywood pushing famous names rather than taking a risk and actually casting an unknown POC because to hollywood big names=More money. Hell, that's probably why the live Action Akira Movie has been stuck in development hell for so long. That's what RDJ's Lincoln Osiris represents and is critiquing in Tropic Thunder.
When Tom read the script because he was friends with Ben and was possibly going to play McConaughey character, he felt like something was missing to put pressure on the actors characters so he created Les Grossman. Ben liked it and added it to the script. Tom said he'd only play the role if he could have fat hands.
I saw the movie opening night.... then I read the reviews the next morning and had no idea that Lex was played by Tom Cruise!!!! Tom and RDJ deserved Oscar nominations for this movie! LEGENDS!
Dude, totally agreed about RDJ in the movie, but I think Tom Cruise is on the podium too. That’s such an iconic role, and he’s absolutely hilarious here. Also, I’ve never laughed so hard as when RDJ briefly broke character and had to fight his face back into a scowl. I was in tears.
I'm really shocked Jimmy somehow didn't know Tom Cruise was in this. People could not STOP talking about him after it came out and it would be one of the first things I'd say about it recommending it to someone, except to not give away the surprise. Glad all his Patreons kept themselves restrained haha.
I fid not even realise it was Tom cruise when I first watched the movie and seen the credits and even then did not now it was Tom cruise until I googled it lol .
You probably saw the "Never Go Full Re'Tard" bit. It's an iconic scene that's posted everywhere... RDJ was nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for playing Kirk Lazarus. He didn't win, but that's still a hell of an honor.
I heard that Les Grossman is Harvey Weinstein parody, that Justin Theroux wrote into the script after Weinsten mess up the release of one of his films.
Tom Cruise did an interview where he stated that the only two requirements he had in order to do this character was, "I want to have fat hands, and I want to dance."
"5 time Academy Award winner Kirk Lazarus. And MTV Movie Award Best Kiss Winner Tobey Maguire". Funniest shit ever. (But I must say that kiss in Spider-man is legendary. Absolutely deserved) 😂
I don't actually love many Tobey Maguire movies, or performances, but there's something lovable about the guy anyway. Maybe just superhero nostalgia of my childhood. But him showing up for this joke was PERFECT haha.
My favorite sequence, BY FAR is 12:27 _"For four hundred years... that word... has kept us _*_down!"_* It's fucking perfection. Utterly magnificent in its audacity 🤣Ariana, from the Diegesis channel, lost all capacity to inhale or make noise because she was laughing too hard. That's the section I always jump to in order to see if the reaction is worth a watch. If they don't laugh at that, they didn't get the movie lol
@@JustChillin740 It's part of RU-vid's comment formatting system. If you bookend a word or sentence with underscores, you get italics. If you do the same with asterisks, you get bold. If you wrap the words with both asterisks and underscores, you get bold italics. It's a little sensitive to adjacent characters, like it breaks if you put a period on the outside, touching either an underscore or asterisk, so you may have to go back and edit your comment to move the period to inside of the special characters to make the formatting look right, but play around with it and see how it works for you.
"Man, I don't drop character 'till I done the DVD commentary." Fun Fact: Theatrical movie debut of Brandon Soo Hoo and Sandra Valladares. Cameos Cameos Fact: Tobey Maguire, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Lance Bass, Jon Voight, and Jason Bateman play fictional versions of themselves. Method Actor Fact: When recording the audio commentary for the Unrated DVD and Blu-ray, Robert Downey, Jr. actually spends the entire commentary as the character that appears on the screen as the movie progresses. Historical Fact: The South East Asian gang Flaming Dragon, led by a pre-teen boy, was modeled after God's Army, a guerrilla army in Myanmar. The group was led by twin brothers Johnny Htoo and Luther Htoo, who were nine years old when it was founded in 1997. Johnny and Luther Htoo were fond of American action movie heroes, especially the Rambo franchise. Cruise Unbound Fact: Ben Stiller said nearly all aspects of the Les Grossman character were developed by Tom Cruise, including the dancing and the look of the make-up. Stiller said that in addition to the more obvious make-up effects applied to Cruise's face and head, and the extra hair on his chest and arms, Cruise also decided to play the character wearing oversized prosthetic hands.
As already mentioned: RDJ does in fact the dvd audio commentary in character and it gets even better. They also shot a fake ''documentary'' about the making of the Vietnam movie they're shooting, complete with fake backstage footage/ interviews with the ''actors''/ ''director'' and presented by ''acclaimed German documentary film maker Jan Juergens", which is played by Justin Theroux ( Ben Stiller's co-writer), complete with fake German accent and all. It's called ''Rain of Madness'' and was included in the dvd extras, you can find it on youtube if you like, it's absolutely hilarious.
The more I watch this, the more you see how deep RDJ's acting goes. I'm surprised you didn't put his identity crisis sequence at the end where he goes through all of his characters. But during the rice paddy scene, I love that he's trying to do the language, but he's still doing it as a black man. So good.
Jack Black wasn't at his strongest but his physical comedy gets me. The flailing when the jungle gets bombed, the jumping out of the bushes after getting high as well as his face when he's talking to Kevin about tying him to a tree. Everyone did so well and were so funny in this. Love Cary Grant, a good dark comedy of his I recommend is Arsenic And Old Lace.
Jack Black acted his ass off but unfortunately he was given the weakest character in the movie. Maybe they could have written his character better but it is what it is. I also thought he was the weakest in this movie.
@@pee-buddy yeah they didn't seem to know what to do with him. I think I get what they were going for but it's one aspect they failed to stick the landing on. either way he's at least not a detriment to the movie.
This is a great movie in my opinion. It's so creative, it's so smart. It has some of the funniest lines ever and it has two of my all time favorite characters.
Hi Jimmy!😊 Surprisingly there was no fallout for Robert Downey Jr .wearing black face when this came out. I guess people got that it was just comedy. However, there were protests for Ben Stiller and the Simple Jack character, which offended groups with disabilities. Great reactions to the very funny Tropic Thunder, Jimmy!!!!🎬👏👏👏👏
He previewed the movie for some black advocacy groups, I believe one of which was his local NAACP and they didn’t have a problem with it. Had he been the only ‘black’ character it might have been a problem, but having an actual black guy as part of the main cast eased that.
Not even one minute in and had to pause and comment. The His Girl Friday name drop threw me for a loop. That is an amazing, ridiculous rapid-fire movie that is pretty much unknown. My mouth dropped open and the next words out of my mouth were, "Dude, you are top tier." Really appreciate the love for older movies too
Jay Baruchel is kinda underrated. In this film, and acting in general. He always plays the "relatable" guy in every movie, but he crushes that role every time. I thought he brought a touch of seriousness to this outlandishly wild movie 😂
This is a comedic masterpiece. Finally saw this a couple weeks ago and it was shockingly good. RDJ was wonderful. Also had no idea Tom Cruise was in this movie til the credits.
For your own amusement, please watch the DVD commentary. You can hear the awe in Jack Black and Ben Stiller's voices with how effortlessly RDJ is able to switch voices.
I'm enjoying the fact that there are still people who appreciate irony. Tropic Thunder and Blazing Saddles are up there with Life of Brian. I like how Ricky Gervais said it "Irony is laughing at the 'wrong' thing because you know what the 'right' thing is".
Hands down one of the greatest movies ever made. It was Blazing Saddles for a new generation. RDJ was brilliant. Tom Cruise was unrecognizable, and absolutely killed it. A timeless classic.
If you ask me this is without a doubt one of the greatest comedies ever made. Probably the funniest and most rewatchable movie I've ever seen. There is so much I love about this movie but one of the things I find most remarkable about it is the performances of Tom Cruise and (obviously) Robert Downey Jr. Everybody who has seen the movie will tell you how hilarious both Tom Cruise and especially Robert Downey Jr were but I don't think that fully does it justice. You have 2 actors who are highly renowned and respected/lauded for being among the best DRAMATIC actors of their generation (I've always considered Tom Cruise extremely overrated and a relatively shitty actor but thats besides the point) but in my opinion they both give the greatest performance of their careers in Tropic Thunder. Critics and the film industry as a whole have never taken comedic performances or comedies in general seriously so you more than likely won't hear many people saying/agreeing with this but I genuinely believe they've never given a better performance. I certainly understand if you disagree but if you find my assertion inherently ridiculous or impossible because of the genre then I urge you to try your best to question that bias and look at it more objectively. I've always tried to fight it and remain hopeful that things might change but due to the film industrys long held biases towards comedic performances and the genre as a whole unfortunately some of the greatest movies and performances of all time have never received the respect, recognition, or level of prestige they actually deserve. Tropic Thunder and especially those 2 performances are among the best examples/evidence that prove this to be the case... I think I'll watch it again tonight with someone new actually and its a guarantee that I will still greatly enjoy it. Lol Now I'm excited its crazy how much replay value this movie has.
@@thejudge1712 hahaha Judging by your comment alone it's probably pretty safe to assume that you're just a complete douche/asshole but it still made me laugh. Lol
Dead ass, Tropic Thunder is one of the most underrated movie ever created. It was not controversial, it was what comedy was. Teasing things that everyone thought about and exposed it in ways to make everyone laugh.
I have a theory that the whole full rtard bit was a subtle shot at Leo. If you've seen What's Eating Gilbert Grape and you know his history with the Academy, you'll get it. It's very funny regardless of who finds it offensive, but I think it's even funnier to me than it is to most people.
Oh man I forgot about that. The thing is all the reviews I read about _WEGG_ talk about Leo doing a great job. I think more of _I Am Sam_ as just a recent movie shortly before _Tropic Thunder_ that just nobody had any respect for.
The full rtard theory had already been well established in Hollywood. Sean Penn is a fantastic actor, but too well known to do that without it coming off as extremely offensive. A lot of people think Leo tried to sidestep that bc it was his breakout role, and the Academy has been making him pay for it ever since. Personally, I think he maybe got a little bit lost in the method lol. But he was amazing in Gilbert Grape. The only time I've ever been really blown away by him tbh.
I remember when this came out... no one was mad about RDJ doing black face... they were pissed about Simple Jack. Every single character had their own website. They ended up taking down the Simple Jack website 😂😂😂
It's one of those movies that gets funnier the more times you see it. And the stuff behind the scenes makes it even that much better. RDJ was still Hollywood's black sheep when they made this - and at the same time, a little indie movie called "Ironman" (I can't remember which was first). And he absolutely killed both roles. Probably shoulda got an award for both, but the academy and Film Actors Guild only like movies you can't understand or that make you feel like shit...
It's good to see/hear another Black Man giving props to Robert Downey Jr. He really committed and didn't denigrate anyone. He gave a great performance.
Hell yeah! His Girl Friday is EPICALLY funny. Cary Grant is a legend, his dynamic with Russell was amazing. Second only to his comedic dynamic with Hepburn in Bringing Up Baby.
Best comedy EEVAAR! Plus, love the "I'm a rooster illusion" - "Fuck it! We'll deal with him later"... That is so more realistic than a ton of "realistic" movies where characters are wasting time trying to get a person back through talking, instead of just dragging them to safety.
Man, I gotta say, you're reaction is really cool! Others have posted about watching the DVD commentary, and they're correct about it. Another funny commentary is on the Roadhouse movie(I believe it's a special edition) that has Kevin Smith do a guest commentary.
Wait a second. All time comedies comes up and your first thought is 'My Girl Friday?' That's a man of taste, right there. I think this is the quickest I've ever subbed to a channel.
15:25 - They didn't expect Tom to just start dancing like that. They were just like, "Umm.. Cruise is dancing. Ok. Let's see where this goes". If you look at everyone in the scene, you can see their confusion and surprise. :)
Fun fact, my parents decided to take 10 year old me to see this and not tell me it was rated r and the second the war scene at the beginning started to play i closed my eyes for the whooole movie and ive never actually seen this movie since, just heard the dialogue 😭 this move traumatized me as a kid, so watching this reaction will hopefully fix that for me lmaoo
They didn't show Tom Cruise in the trailer. So most people in the cinema didn't know he was in it. And most people didn't recognize him. You could hear people gasping and saying "oh my god" when his name popped up at the end credits 😂😂
I was surprised people didn't recognize him. He did have a lot of makeup to change his look but his voice is very distinctive. He was having so much fun. I wish he did more villains. This role and Vincent from Collateral are great.
Seriously the world needs to take a chill pill and watch this film and remember to not take this ridiculous life so seriously! Its time for Tropic Thunder 2!
