Finbar singing The Green Fields of France written by Eric Bogle, 1976.
Filmed at Grand Opera House, Belfast, 1990.
Title: GREEN FIELDS OF FRANCE (RE 1)
Artist: THE FUREYS WITH DAVEY ARTHUR
Label: BANSHEE
Date of entry: 01.03.1979
Highest Placement: 1
Weeks in the Irish Charts: 28
Well, how do you do, young Willie McBride,
Do you mind if I sit here down by your graveside?
And rest for awhile neath the warm summer sun,
I've been walking all day, and I'm nearly done.
I see by your gravestone you our only 19
When you joined the great fallen in 1916,
I hope you died well and I hope you died clean
Or, Willie McBride, was it slow and obscene?
Did they Beat the drum slowly, did the play the fife lowly?
Did they sound the 'death march' as they lowered you down?
did band play The Last Post in chorus?
Did the pipes play the Flowers of the Forest?
Did you leave a wife or a sweetheart behind
In some fatal heart is your memory enshrined?
And, though you died back in 1916,
in that fatal heart are you forever 19?
Or are you a stranger without even a name,
Enclosed in forever behind a glass pane,
In an old photograph, torn and tattered and stained,
And faded to yellow in a brown leather frame?
Did they Beat the drum slowly, did the play the pipe lowly?
Did they sound the 'death march' as they lowered you down?
Did band play The Last Post in chorus?
Did the pipes play the Flowers of the Forest?
The sun now it shines on the green fields of France;
there's warm summers breeze, it makes red poppies dance.
And look how the sun comes from under the clouds;
there's No gas no barbed wire, no guns firing now.
But here in this graveyard it's still No Man's Land
the countless white crosses lie mute in the sand
to man's blind indifference to his fellow man.
To a whole generation who were butchered and damned.
Did they Beat the drum slowly, did the play the fife lowly?
Did they sound the 'death march' as they lowered you down?
Did band play The Last Post in chorus?
Did the pipes play the Flowers of the Forest?
Young Willie McBride, I can't help wonder why,
Do all those who lie here why they died?
Did you really believe when they told you "The Cause?"
Did you really believe that this war would end wars?
Well the sorrow, the suffering the glory, the pain
The killing, and dying, was all done in vain,
For Willie McBride, it all happened again,
again, and again, and again, and again.
Did they Beat the drum slowly, did the play the fife lowly?
Did they sound the 'death march' as they lowered you down?
Did band play The Last Post in chorus?
Did the pipes play the Flowers of the Forest?

Pinched from an Expat Scot living in Australia: Eric Bogle. But truth be told it is the best version. God bless .....

Both Finbar and Eddie give Eric Bogle credit every time they perform it. It was certainly not pinched.

@@concernedcitizen3163 The first time Eric found out they'd used his song was when he heard it was in the UK top ten. Eric told me this in person. Now they may have come to an agreement later. But It was used without Bogle's knowledge initially.

Went to see my great uncle’s name on the wall of the Neuve chappele memorial, never found his body but he died in that battle in 1916. This is one hell of a reminder of the absolute nonsense that war is.

Thank you for this great song!! I didn't know it, and I just read the lyrics. It makes me think that in France, in every village, there is a monument with so many names written on it, just for this war... My grandma couldn't stand violence on TV. Once she told me that when she was 8, all her older cousins (four or five) went to war, and none came back. Pascal

@wigsonthegreen Or if it refers to any one person in particular. McBride obviously represents all the fallen. Hamish Imlach said he remembered Bogle writing the song in Germany a few days after Bogle had visited war cemetries. He'd remembered a name he'd seen and used that. I'd imagine probably only because McBride rhymed with graveside. whether it was actually a person called William or if the date 1916 and age 19 were significant or just made up for the song is unclear!

I remember hearing Finbar singing this tune a long time ago, in the days Thatcher waged a war to win the following elections. I heard it once, bad quality, on the radio. I never heard it again, i suppose it was live. I hear it to this day; the Fury (pun intended) brought me to tears...

I loved this song way back when I first heard it a concert in Cork, Ireland. As the years go on, it takes on even more meaning, as those who previously have enjoyed this beautiful ballad, have themselves passed on. As the famous saying goes - history is written by the oppressors, while the people write the songs. Never a truer word spoken.

What gives me some Hope is the fact that young Willie fought my ancestors. And now its barely imagineable that germans, irish, french, english, scottish, dutch, and many good people will ever Slaughter each other. So maybe there is some possibility we wont do it again, and again.

proud? of a senseless slaughter of millions of naive young men British French German who were all fighting for king country and god even. over the top, over the top and get mowed down by machine gun! If you didnt go over the top then you were shot for cowardice bah!! and did you know that they brought in tens of thousands of Chinese to dig their trenches? All wars are disgusting and unnecessary so why do we have them? Is it a sport for kings. emperors, generals and big bankers?

Sorry Prince you have this out of proportion. The young Germans were mentally conditioned by the philosophy of a maniac, who was supported by another team of high flying maniacs who given half a chance would have become worse than Hitler, if that was possible. Christmas Day ??? most were then shot as "deserters".. and...by both sides.."consorting with the enemy". The Germans wanted to rule the world by force...Today they want to rule the world by economic control. It is only the others members of the EU that keep the Germans where they should be. In memory of those left, still living today, and those like nearly all of my family who fought and lost their lives to a maniac dictator. There is no excuse and never will be for war or violence !!!!!
