If they build a roadmap for fusion to be strong a motion graphic tool. It will absolutely change the game, and a strong vector system is a good start.

I feel this as well. I'm using Davinci (Studio Version) for 3 years now (being an editor for nearly 20 years) and Fusion is still a single pain. My little wish describes this whole thing pretty well, I think: I just want a text box that wraps text automatically. It's amazing that this little feature alone doesn't exist. The keyframe editor should also be revised or a better timeline overview in Fusion in general would be great. And why can't I click on objects in the preview and the correct node is automatically selected? I really love Davinci. It's an excellent piece of software. I also have the fear that there might be a user exodus.

Having pitched successfully to my workplace, switching to Resolve, this video has good things to consider for the future. However, I personally just enjoy editing in Resolve more than I ever did in Adobe. (BTW many of your videos helped me make this transition happen) I love Fusion as well. Dynamic link was a minor concern when we made the switch but in almost 6 months it hasn't been an issue at all. This all aside from the massive cost difference. Great video!

I know people who work in the VFX industry. And they prefer Nuke and Fusion over after-effects all day long. The Resolve version of Fusion is there to help you get your feet wet, but if you want to get serious, it may be time to get the studio version. The studio version exists for a reason. The Reactor and Boris FX plug-ins could also up your game, but my friend, it's time for the studio version. By the way, great video.
@rano12321

FYI Fusion has been around for longer than AE and Nuke, and it was used in thousands of movies and tv shows for both compositing and creating motion graphics, it lost its market share only after DD sold Nuke to foundry and made it available for everyone else to use when Apple killed shake.
@gabehobbs
@gabehobbs 4 месяца назад
Yep. I fully agree with almost everything you said, with a slight tweak. I've been saying it for a couple years now: Davinci needs a dedicated Motion Graphics workspace. You can do mograph in fusion, but fusion wasn't built for it. It's more like Nuke than AE. And nobody is using Nuke for mograph, not unless you hate yourself. A lot of people get up in arms about understanding nodes, etc. But its not about that. Fusion makes a lot of sense when compositing. The layout, the tools, the nodes. But it makes no sense when doing mograph. Moving keyframes shouldn't be as hard as it is. Shapes shouldn't be as weird and slow as they are. Text followers shouldn't be as convoluted as they are. Case and point animating word by word. Sure you can, but it's a pain - and you can't template it for use on the edit page. You're totally right that they need to focus on this. Mograph is inescapable in client work, youtube, and even feature films. Fusion just isn't cutting it. I think they need to do two things to really be an all-in-one visual workspace: 1. Make a dedicated mograph workspace. I think if they bolstered some of the fusion engine and moved some stuff around, it could all run on the same thing. Either way, in its current state it's not working. (Or they just go acquire Cavalry) 2. Open up the workspace for better plugins. Blackmagic needs to encourage and work with devs to make plugins for fusion/resolve. Just go look on AEScripts. There are so many great tools there that can make your workflow 10x easier. And yes, there's Reactor but most of that is still compositing based, and not really supported by BM. Just looking at the giant catalog of plugins for AE makes me feel sad about the state of resolve. Imagine if Serif (or Canva) had an Overlord style plugin with Resolve. One click vector import? Game changer. Or if there was a MotionV4 for Fusion. That would really fix 95% of the mograph woes. Regardless, this is a rant. But at the end of the day, sadly I can't leave Adobe yet when AE still dominates the space. I do everything I can in resolve. Edit, color, and audio -- then I start building my graphics in fusion, run into some silly road blocks with ridiculous work arounds...and then have to open up after effects to take the project over the finish line. Until they can get this right, Adobe still has a place in my bank statement. And even though I've been a Davinci evangelist for years now...if D19 isn't headed in the right direction. Adobe has made some solid improvements recently, and it makes me start to wonder if I should just go back to them.
@RyanOsborneUK
@RyanOsborneUK 4 месяца назад
Wow dude… Yes, maybe it’s a bit of a rant but certainly a valid one! Your idea of a dedicated motion graphics workspace is totally on point. I could easily see that as a page between the edit page and fusion, that allows you to work in a cavalry style space, before doing finishing compositing work in fusion. I’ve played with cavalry before, it’s promising but again… another subscription. Only thing I’d say when comparing fusion to nuke is… fusion actually has a lot more going for it when it comes to mograph. Although I get your point. For me the workaround with other design apps is the main issue but no reason BM couldn’t build a vector system into a new page. Love it dude, thanks for the comment 🙏

@@RyanOsborneUK I love that I can do some super complicated effects and mograph inside my favourite editor. BUT! The Fusion page would already be 5 times better if they fixed the buggy and undercooked UI - especially the keyframe tab. Improvements I'd like to see in keyframes tab: 1. Rearrange nodes in any custom order. You can already arrange them by type and order of appearance of animation, but it's clunky and unintuitive. Custom order would help with organising. Maybe so you could even create folders inside the keyframe tab? 2. Increasing, decreasing or moving the length of a node is supremely painful and buggy. The handles are unintuitive, some nodes dictate over others but this is not clearly communicated. Sometimes when you change the length of a node and try to command+Z it doesn't work and you might do irreparable damage to your comp. 3. Moving the keyframes is more difficult than it should be. The thin lines shouldn't have passed the first UI meeting and some copying of the AE iconography would do wonders. 4. When using expressions the UI is bugged to hell. The nodes with expressions force themselves to the keyframe tab and can't be removed. "Show only selected tools" doesn't work. Some expressions / tools also mess up the main viewport by forcing some tools to never leave the viewport. I like the splines tab in general, but there as well... why can't I drag the handles of multiple keyframes simultaneously? It always pulls just one handle despite my selections. The "T" menu helps with this, but still doesn't fix the issue completely. The vectors, alignment tools and other essentials would be nice too!
@AnimusBehemoth

The problem is that there's absolutely no reason for them to make any of these changes. There's no real competition for them, and they don't generate revenue from it. NLEs are in the same boat as DAWs for audio editing: they were initially created to woo analog producers over to digital, so the workflows mimic old ways of doing things, and they've never updated. As someone who has coded and designed professionally for over a decade, I can tell you that the amount of work it would take to update their creaky codebase makes it a non-starter. And no one wants to try and challenge them, so people have to learn to think like the NLE wants them to, rather than the other way around. Imagine if Word or Google Docs worked as a digital representation of a typewriter... no one would use it.
@gabehobbs
@gabehobbs 4 месяца назад
@@RyanOsborneUK Totally agree man! It definitely has more going for it than nuke, but definitely not as much as AE does unfortunately. But you nailed it, a page right between edit and Fusion would round the whole program out if you ask me -- that's the dream! What I will say on that note is that Fusion is really good in the VFX space. I've used it to do some really cool stuff, and don't really want them to mess with it selfishly. Which is why I bring up Cavalry! It's promising, but like you said -- another subscription. One of those things I wish BM would buy and just plop into Resolve. Let's see what DR19 brings us. I've been holding out a little hope for something big since they only did the incremental updates last year. Seem like they didn't feel that they went up a whole new version, so let's hope they have something good cooking back there.
@gabehobbs

@@AnimusBehemoth Yeah, I hear ya. I will say that Blackmagic has surprised me with Resolve in that department. They've made a shockingly good product up to this point and invested quite a bit into it. I do think if they want to keep market share, they need to keep pushing and innovating. For a lot of users, Fusion is what keeps them from switching. If they updated that, or added something more to it maybe more people would switch -- and they might sell more BM gear. At least, that's my hope.

Fusion it built for both motion graphics and compositing, it has powerful tools for both and BMD is very clear on their website to go with nodes over layers, I don't see that ever happening. But they could definitely upgrade the mograph tools in the future for sure, update the SVG workflow and maybe make a plugin to work in sync with affinity apps or adobe apps but I don't ever see them making a layer based compositing page.

I really love Resolve and especially Fusion. For a lot of people, the color page was the reason to switch to Resolve, but for me, it was Fusion. So, as much as I wanna disagree with you, I think you are very much right in this one. BMD has bought Resolve and took it to another level with development and also dropping the price over the years, so everyone thought they'd do the same for Fusion when they bought Fusion back in 2014, but so far they've barely done anything significant to Fusion. There has been small updates here and there, but most of the updates for Fusion has been to support Resolve and compliment Resolve and slowly let the standalone version die. It's crazy how fast and responsive Fusion used to be even 10+ years ago, doing massive size 3D comps all running on GPU in real-time when AE didn't even have multithreading but it in the last 10 years for the lack of development from BMD has caught up and ruined the crazy performance advantages Fusion had and the system for doing 3D, 2D compositing and motion graphics has been unchanged for like 10 years now. I mean, they don't even bother updating the demos for the Fusion page, so I can't expect much from them. Really sad to see something you've liked so much turn into this over the years.

Same feeling. I switched to DaVinci about a year ago... The learning curve in Fusion is painful at first but then you enjoy it immensely. Unfortunately, I have been very discouraged with DaVinci Resolve and the mographs, I do what I can in Fusion and they look great, but I know that with AE that work would only take a quarter of what it takes me to do in Fusion. Aside from how limited Fusion feels, I know you can do a lot of things that you can do in AE, but let's face it, it will take a lot longer. The AE community is also much larger, just looking at the amount of plugins out there to optimize your workflow is completely insane. I think I'll make the jump back to Adobe, mostly because of the amount of plugins they offer to speed up your workflow.
@HeadKanon
@HeadKanon 4 месяца назад
Only a few minutes into the video, but I've recently had to jump back into adobe after exclusively using resolve and there are so many things that are powerful and useful about Adobe and their dynamic linking and I quite genuinely enjoy using AE for Motion Graphics projects. I really really miss black magic cloud for ease of travel with projects and not having to worry about which project file is the latest one And Adobe's performance, particularly when it comes to rendering is bloody abysmal. If resolve manages to add a page targeted at motion graphics or update fusion to easier accomodate for that workflow and add elements of the dynamic linking situation Adobe has. It'll be a no-brainer to which is better. Great Video!

I’m a fully paid up DR Studio and Affinity photo/designer user and gladly got off the Adobe bandwagon several years ago. I also hate subscriptions unless they are relatively fairly priced like Topaz ai where you always have a perpetual licence but can buy back in to get the latest version at anytime. I can’t afford to have too many subscriptions on the go at one time either. I’m not a professional so don’t earn anything from my content but I still need professional grade tools. Also I love the way BM BRAW works from my BM cameras in DR Studio. I don’t do much mind the hurdles you described in favor of the pricing model but would welcome any improvements in that direction 👍🏻

We basically need BMD to make an equivalent to USD, but for the 2D world. I just want them to update Fusion a lot more than they do. Fix/update some of the old nodes, add more nodes, improve the hotkey manager etc. I don't know why they keep updating the cut page and the fairlight page so much with every update when most people use edit, fusion, color the most. As long as they don't change to layers, I'm good. Nodes are the reason why I switched to Resolve/Fusion, if people don't wanna use nodes and use layers, there are other softwares that exist as well.

If you only take premiere pro and davinchi without AE. The choice is definitely Davinchi. But personally I lack simple functions. Working with text, there is no search mode, you constantly have to scroll to find the desired font. There is no possibility as in Adobe to edit text directly on the screen. There is no button to remove unused. No possibility to animate subtitles. Yes I use the script Snap caption and active caption but then you have to constantly clean the cache and Davinchi starts to slow down and crashes. Also accelerate the audio track with a slider without going to the Fairlight tab using elastic wave. Yes also in premiere pro grid is much better than in Davinchi Thanks hope we will see the new Davinchi soon.

Great notes that I hope they take seriously. A couple workarounds that I have used to great effect: Apple motion ($50) plus Pixelmator ($50) for graphic design/animation - design in pixelmator and export as a Motion file. Motion is built to support Final Cut but I find it to be a great app to use by itself. (Obviously this is a mac only solution.) The Fusion nodes are powerful but the learning curve is steep and the ultimate end results can be fairly limited in terms of style. I love Resolve and I use it daily but I can not abandon my other apps just yet.

One thing that should be made as well is the possibility to export with Lottie for web animations. Fusion currently does not offer such option, so I have to resort to After Effects or a similar alternative for that. About the vector system, Fusion allows you to import SVGs but they are rasterised when adding transform nodes or similar nodes (it looks like the “continuous rasterise” option is not respected). There is a workaround shown in one of Jake Wipp’s videos about how to import SVGs correctly and there is also this plugin that can do it for you made by X-Session (on their Ko-Fi account). About importing SVGs with “Overlord” but made for Fusion, there is a tool called Paste 2D by FIFTY50.

I'm super frustrated with BMD. Reason being: the Krokodove Reactor plugin is a core part of my work flow, and they broke it. In Resolve 18.5, they broke their ABI, making some Reactor plugins like Krokodove no longer work. Since then, they haven't released a new Resolve SDK, and without it the Krokodove developer can't release a new version. So, I'm stuck using pre-18.5 Resolve for my projects. Beyond that-- as a software developer and motion graphics editor, I want to make reusable tools for Fusion. The existing systems for macro/control editing and packaging are so incredibly clumsy. If Resolve built better developer tools, the community could more easily create plugins that fill in the gaps.

We are actually in a very weird situation. After Effects is by far THE vector animation tool. There is no full substitute for Ae. Even softwares like blender which only works with vectors can’t touch the edge of Ae when it comes to vector animation. Ae is simply too powerful in this area with its layer based workflow and vast number of developers behind numerous plugins. As for fusion, I’d say at least they have tried😂 After all nobody makes motion graphics using Nuke. That would be totally creepy and annoying

I use davinci resolve, since when it was basically for color grading, I really liked being able to do almost everything on the same platform, but after that the development in relation to motion graphics never went forward, with some additions for video editing, some AI thing. But graphic animation was never for davinci resolve, fusion. In fact, it was now about integration, with broadcasting for TV and the technical part of cinema, camera integration, storage, among others, but not motion graphics. Which doesn't make sense to me, because it's closely linked and at one point or another the person will migrate to another platform because they miss it

One of the problems I have with how Fusion is being handled is that it was a vfx compositing software when it was acquired. Then, in their goal to be a one stop shop/ compete with Adobe, they spread themselves too thin. In my experience, the fusion page becomes incredibly unstable when trying to work with more complex comps, and can cause serious issues in the deliver page. Not to mention, Fusion’s caching, both in the fusion page and the fusion standalone app, is just horrendous in comparison to after effects or Nuke. At the end of the day, you can absolutely make some amazing art with Fusion, Davinci resolve has added it to their incredible pocketknife. But sometimes, you’d rather have a chainsaw to cut down a tree

I haven’t come across these issues, but that’s because I haven’t had to do that kind of work. That said I do use both programs. Premiere cuz I get paid for the vids I make and Resolve for everything personal. Despite the fact that I use Premiere more, I’m still faster and can get stuff done significantly faster in Resolve. Resolve will be my go to NLE for a long time.

I would like to hope that the DaVinci Resolve team were working towards features of the high end broadcast work stations such as Quantel, incorporating Paintbox and other features. This is not an easy task as such work stations have their own hardware and are not designed to work on a PC or Mac. However I feel they are getting very close. We should not underestimate the aims of the development team behind DaVinci Resolve.

I feel your pain. Another big issue I have with Fusion is performance when working with a high number of nodes and especially with many expressions on the controls. Dispite lots of work to improve performance, I have videos that is extremely laggy and near impossible to edit, and takes 24-36 hours to render (for a 15 minute video on a M2 laptop with 64GB RAM) 😓

On point! I've had the same thoughts. It's so hard to do good motion graphics in Resolve because the Fusion UI isn't friendly for it. But it could be! And if they did that and had a connection with Affinity.... Oooo man would they be unstoppable. I think it's within their interest eventually because there's a growing community that's strong. Thanks for making this Ryan!

Absolutely on point editing here first and foremost, the amount of thought in the engagement is awesome, so hats off here! And yes, completely feel the same. I've managed to avoid AE for the last 3 years but can't help but feel I'm limiting myself to other freelancers out there as Fusion is so stagnant and frequently buggy (even if I'm hundreds of pound better off!). Blackmagic could overtake Adobe on the video and MG side of things if they focused their attention on Fusion as much as the other pages. Here's hoping... Cheers Ryan!

Also, fusions studio is very different from fusion. Fusion in DaVinci Resolve is a little more limiting, so if you're serious about compositing you should be doing it in in studio. But I agree it needs a bit of updating to reclaim The crown from nuke and formerly shake. Yeah I feel like fusion's not getting the love it should cuz it's a great piece of software and it's what I learned node-based compositing on along with apple shake and then nuke.
@darkvador6432
@darkvador6432 4 месяца назад
What I think ? Well, as a compositing artist for years, I'm happy Fusion focuses on... compositing... What did you expect ? I've never understood some who come to use an app and want it to perfectly mimic the one they just left. I'm a HC user of Fusion as I could be on Nuke, but as a mac user, I have no problem using Motion for specific tasks and thereby for me, there is no other way than this : I can perfectly understand what you miss, but if Resolve had to raise its influence and efficiency in specifically "motion graphics", I'd prefer (a looooot) that BMD implement ANOTHER tab in Resolve than polluting what Fusion is so far. Of course, if they worked quicker on Fusion, I'd be glad, but in the way Fusion is made for, not in a way where Fusion would be average at everything, see ?

I use After Effects a lot. It has its issues, and I hate needing an Adobe subscription - and Fusion looks great. I do - however - like the control of a layer based, keyframe way of working when it comes to motion graphics. I like blending modes and it has a lot in common with Photoshop's layer system in this respect. Unreal Engine is also making a big play for motion graphics with Project Avalanche. What happened to Nuke? I know it is not really for motion graphics, but I don't hear people talk as much about Nuke as I used to...

I do agree with a lot of the point you've made but I'm not sure about the integration with affinity products in the future, they can make a plugin to import affinity files in Fusion like you can with PSD. But like there are tools that are standard and geared towards different industries, for movies and TV they have Media composer and Nuke and a lot more tools, for indie and internet Adobe software are very popular and there's commercial and broadcast where Flame (and Baselight) is still being used in many studios to this date and it's an all in solution and IMO that's what BM's primary competition and hence why they've incorporated Fusion and Fairlight into one software to compete with Flame and not necessarily just Adobe products since the whole reason why BM exists was to make affordable gear and tools for the broadcast market (what I've heard the CEO saying in interviews). But a lot of the time it feels like BM has been abandoning Fusion for a while, while they put resources into developing useless stuff like the Cut page which basically no one uses as the whole point of having all of the tools under the same hood so you can make quick turnarounds and deliver in shorter times instead of opening and closing different softwares. But I do hope they'd improve working with vectors in Fusion in the future, especially when importing SVG files it should import as shapes and not masks because the most I agree with you is the statement that BM has been developing Fusion very slowly. They've added stuff over the years but they have been very minor and most of the time they've added features and they haven't improved upon on it like the Shapes system and the USD system. Fusion has been around for a really long time, longer than Nuke and AE and some of the tools that were introduced like 15 years ago they are still unchanged like the compositing, particle system and especially the 3D system, they hold up well for the most part but they are really really starting to show their age after so many years or BM not even touching them. Which I really hope, they'd put more effort into Fusion over other parts of Resolve even tho I can totally understand that Resolve is nowhere near as expensive as Adobe or Nuke nor they make a lot of money from software as they have limited resources to develop all of the pages all together but I'd rather have them work more on the editing and fusion more than any other page if they want to compete with Adobe and the indie/content creator industry for sure. But it's true that different people use Resolve for different reasons and most people don't use all of the pages and they all have different requirements as BM is not solely focused on one thing like mograph or vfx or color. We can only hope for the best.

I detest ransomware too. I subscribe to none. The vector import is a headache having just done a seriously complex import. Had to use a combo of tricks from Jake Wipp and Casey Faris but the end result was perfect. This was days after they announced the ability to do this. So I do think a simpler process will not be too far away. Does it have to integrate with Affinity? Mmmm, not so much. The drawing tools are there in fusion.

100% Agree. They've spent years beefing up all the other pages of Resolve and making them work well. They have done almost nothing to the Fusion page and have regressed the feature set that they originally had when Fusion 9 was around. They removed features without understanding what they did and continue to let it limp along without current features and fixes that would let it work like it should. They sLibrary of nodes are fine but without a style override, it's ability is limited and becomes cumbersome with sophisticated graphics.

Seeing that developing Fusion as a software isn't front and center on Blackmagic's to-do list I expect them being forced into a choice. With the limited resources allotted to Fusion, Blackmagic has to figure out Fusion's space in the market. Is it going to try and chase Nuke as a VFX compositior in the film and TV industry which seems to be its current trajectory or should it try and aim for more of a motion graphics approach and try and win over customers from the Adobe Suite? Not choosing means Fusion will in the future cater to nobody. Jack of all trades but master of none.

Adobe has a strong choke hold on creatives. Dont get me wrong the comapny is amazing at what they do but they are pernicious with their pricing to the detriment of the creatives they seek to serve. No one has been able to challenge them on it.The Affinity acquisition has the potential to change this. In regards to motion design software we may see a shift but im not sure that shift will come from Fusion because they are focused on hardware for TV. Cavalry seems to be doing something amazing. The Shape system is no different. It really can be a bit disheartening. Personally I think the Fusion team has very limited resources. Just speculation of course but it sure feels that way. Anyhooo... maybe things pick up a bit with v19. Maybe not. Why you exporting your layers individually? Just export as an EXR and use the exr read node to break out the layers. This is actually standard for CJ. Nick. Does it after effects does it? These programs don't read in Photoshop files? They read in exr files. That's what you should be doing.

Also, if you keep the file name the same when you update that file name you just write over the file name and just refresh the input in fusion like you would do in Nuke or after effects and it auto updates. You don't need dynamic LinkedIn. You kind of got it already. You know what I mean? And if you're worried about losing the old version, in case you want to roll it back, you just put a revision number at the end of it, just rename it or drop it into a backup folder. Now I can't remember if fusion does this, but I know in Nuke it rereads the file input unless it's cached. So I'm assuming that fusion does that anyway so it's kind of like dynamic linking.

Your concern can easily be expanded to all the other diciplines they offer in the package. Audio editing, color grading, compositing, video editing, general UI/UX. There are so many basic issues that people keep complaining about but rarely any of it gets adressed. Instead they feed us marginal updates and focus on new tools like AI crap. They are also completely silent on development intent/roadmaps and almost never communicate with their users unless it's certain bugs or issues about paying them. Very awkward business practices but not much choice for colorists that can't spend a lot of money for the better alternatives. Shame really.
