not gonna lie that acrylic drone looks awsome. Im guessing since the acrylic is not rigid and flexible the FC was seeing alot of vibrations.

That happened because of jelly-like frame. PID controller tried to handle it but reaction from the motors was so strong, it just started fly hight (pun) in the sky Needed to seriously decrease PIDs and maybe play with filters to cut off the frequency of the frame.

That is exactly what happened, I'm actually writing my engineer degree thesis right now (yeah, should be writing not watching YT) and I did a 5" with a 3D printed PLA frame, the arms were so jelly that all the drone did while arming was go in to these weird oscilations. Luckily I did all the testing before mounting the props and trying to fly. Turning the PIDs all the way down to 0 helped with the problem a lot but the oscilations still occured from time to time so I couldn't fly it. What I did in the end was add a stiff 8mm thick trapeze shaped frame (trapeze because its a deadcat frame) around the whole drone and now everything is working as it should. Wasted like 3 days trying to fix those oscilations in betaflight 😂

I have a brushed quad that uses clear polycarbonate that is mirrored on one side for a frame. It is pretty strong. Maybe try that next time.

do NOT under any circumstances cut polycarbonate on a laser cutter, the fumes are extremely dangerous and toxic.

Polycarbonate instead of acrylic would probably work better, as it doesnt explode on impact and is very strong

Use Polycarbonate sheet (lexan) for your next see through drone. It's very strong and doesn't break like acrylic.

yeah like others have said, it was a runaway cause by your pid loop not being customized to it, and floppy arms. Reinforce them with carbon fiber rods and customize your pid loop.

I remember that same experience I had when I armed it. It was 2019. I made the arms using plexi glass, like yours, which I bought in Home Depot. It flew away constantly. The vibrations was so bad. I didn't get a chance to fix it because it broke. It didn't last for 2 days, hahaha

Try it with weaker motors and thicker arms, I 3d-printed a drone and this was a key to it working well.

I remember when I started flying fpv, my first frame was clear acrylic or pc. It wasnt bad but it was meh... this was in 2013. It was from hobbyking, airplane esc, kk1.4 controller. It does look cool but has no real benefit from carbon fiber

I bet you could use a more loosey-goosey PID tune if you ever wanted to do this again. I think Bardwell has said runaways happen when the PID values are cranked too high for the quad. The stock values for a 5" are supposed to be pretty forgiving but this was probably too much for it.

Yeah sure It was resonance issues. I tried to build a 3d printed frame and solved the vibration issues Just doubling the arms thickness compared to the carbone fiber version.

I'm making a 5inch from a cardboard tube and beech wood..Got the same pre-expectations..But gonna fly it anyways! If it flys or if it dies, it's the process that counts! Time for welly boots..

Polycarbonate is a hardier material than acrylic and tends to flex and retain its original shape if not over contorted. Its still no carbon sheet but it will bend not snap.

Brooooooo I laughed so hard when it flew into the sky. That shit happened to me after hours of upgrading the dji avata with the 3.5” kit. Luckily it landed on some bushes. 😂 that frame looks sick, maybe for bigger drones the material won’t work, but how about micro whoops? Keep at it, cool work!

I love alt materials and i fly 3d printed stuff all the time. Here's what you want to do to get this thing flying. go get a bamboo cutting board 8/10mm thick. cut your arms from that, you want the length of the arm parallel with the grain of the board. cut your plates from acrylic (i would recommend at least 4mm) if you want them transparent or even better 3d print them at ABS 4mm thickness (not going to be transparent tho, but it will be probably lighter). find the appropriate bolts to fasten this monster. I guarantee you this is going to fly fine. You can even 3d print your arms with abs > 12mm thickness, that will fly too, but bamboo is just more rigid, lighter, durable.

Problem with ABS is you have to have a case to keep it hot enough to have the layers stick together. Pain in the AS$! IMO, too much hassle... I suggested using PETG - so much easier to print with - and no case required. Super strong too. Then, design the frame without all of those slits in it that are OK with carbon fiber, but not less rigid material. Just leave all of those out. It'll be fun to design and try this all again. I believe he'll have much better results if he things rigid and strong.
