Mushrooms actually did wonders in my life. I could remember several years ago, I suffered severe depression and mental disorder. Was diagnosed with BPD. Not until my wife recommended me to psilocybin mushrooms treatment. Psilocybin treatment saved my life honestly. 8 years totally clean. Never thought I would be saying this about mushrooms.

I was horrifically depressed since childhood. It was relentless. I assumed it would ultimately end me somehow. About twelve years ago I randomly accepted the offer from a friend of a few doses of mushrooms. I did them two consecutive nights alone. First night was pretty mild. The second night? Wow. I saw my depression from every angle, realized much. Next day: depression totally gone. Never came back, never coming back. It's like it's a forest far away I can remember, and could probably find again with enough effort, but it has zero impact on anything in my life or mind. They honestly saved my life and improved it immensely. I never did them again, either. I wish there was a good, organized way to administer them to people who would benefit from them.

So happy to see you 2 speaking to each other. Alan is to mycologists what Paul Stamets is to laypeople who are just big fans of mushrooms. Paul used to be incredibly respected in the mycology community, but unfortunately he tarnished his good name peddling pseudoscience to sell products. But, Alan is almost universally respected, and it's always nice to hear from him -- especially with you, as you're one of my favorite Scientists with a focus on entheogens.

@gryaznygreeb
@gryaznygreeb 7 месяцев назад
@@yungfroglegI was gonna say that! The nerve of Paul to sell myceliated grain as a proper mushroom product is just asinine. He insists its the same or somehow different yet better than the fruit bodies. BS, everyone who has cultivated any type of mushroom knows it's just cheaper and quicker to get some mycelium growing on grain than it is to properly fruit them.
@yungfrogleg
@yungfrogleg 7 месяцев назад
@@gryaznygreeb i completely agree i could go on and on. No traditional medicinal mushroom was used by eating the mycelium. Fruit bodies have always been the point of interest, the thing you can actually hold in your hands, and the highest concentration of medicine in the mushroom. When people take magic mushrooms they dont eat the grain spawn lol 😂 🤣😁😅🤣 you purchase FRUIT BODIES! MUSHROOMS! Lol 😹 its unfortunate that people are getting swindled

the patreon is on the screen if you want to donate its tough to "get funding" because the funding comes with tons of strings attached when it comes to something like this. the big businesses arent going to just donate millions of dollars to research without expecting a ROI honestly, Patreon and crowdfunding in general is HIGHLY overused, but this is a space where I think a privately donated patreon is the best way to go about it

I first saw Alan's' lab on "crime pays but botany doesn't". One of my favorite channels. I had no idea you also knew him! I think CPBBD's quest to make botany exciting for the layman (with a bit of a ghetto energy to keep things interesting) is similar to your efforts to make chemistry cool again through your Pharmacopeia show. A podcast together might be interesting? The low brow chemistry and botany discussion would meld very nicely I think... Joey can be rather crass but is well learned.

I think he was the first one I heard say that the Chantrelles were all a product of convergent evolution. I've been into mycology about ten years. Even selling commercially. I'll never go this deep. He's right about the Amanita Muscaria. I've heard that too about them being one of the best mushrooms. I've heard to boil them a couple times and dip them in butter. Just never got around to doing it myself.

On one cold October morning around three years ago, I headed off to the woods to go on a trail run. I ran to a specific spot where there was a beech tree with one long horizontal seat-shaped branch that I sat on to catch my breath. A few minutes later, I scouted a nearby clearing covered in fallen leaves. Here I began stretching in preparation for the main run. I swung my arms, moved my hips, stretched my quads, and finally bent down and touched my toes. Though I normally would have stood up after this position, the ground looked inviting, so I got all the way down and began doing some press-ups. After my last press-up, I noticed a twig just in front of my eyes. It was covered in tiny, bright yellow specks, and on closer inspection, I noticed that they were little mushrooms. I later learned that these were called Hymenoscyphus calyculus. Though small, they still had a well-defined stem and cup. I felt like a giant looking at mushrooms in a miniature world. I had never seen these before and wondered what else I had missed right in front of my eyes. With a new sense of curiosity, I looked around to see what else I could find. Lo and behold, I noted a row of cream-capped mushrooms that poked out from the woodland floor. I now know that these were Rhodocollybia butyracea, also known as butter caps. Had these mushrooms always been there? When did they pop up? How have I never seen them before? What were they? Are they edible? Poisonous? A profusion of thoughts entered my head, fueled by excitement, which in turn was fueled by the strangeness of these natural aliens I had only just appreciated in my late 20s. I felt like a kid again. The fact that I had spotted two different forms of mushrooms in a small area told me that there was more to be discovered. I began running. At every turn, I stumbled upon a new species. A handful of silvery-grey Mycena pseudocorticola were illuminated by the light on a fallen branch I jumped over. I turned left. A group of small brown Mycena haematopus stood confidently on a mossy bed like tiger’s eye crystals on green silk. Ten steps further, on the side of a thick oak log, I spotted Ascocoryne sarcoides, purple in colour and jelly-disc-like in shape. Since then I have published, what I believe is, the most in-depth (AND pretty) book on medicinal mushrooms out there now. I am surrounded by mushrooms now. And I love it. My fungal fascination as well as my medical background has also helped various people with illnesses, but cancer especially. Thank you so much for being you guys. I thoroughly enjoyed this conversation. Extremely high quality stuff. God bless!
