Hi Danny. So sorry to hear about your loss in 2020. Covid has me out of work. I was just getting started with a speaker project. I got the drivers and built a test box and played with the crossover. Oh my gosh! The sound quality I achieved blows away everything in my speaker collection. The project is still frankensteined in my toss=it room, one day I will get back to it. I realy enjoy your content. I look forward to adding some of your kits to my collection!

My condolences on your uncle’s passing. What a year it has been. DIY has provided a magnificent distraction for me. I built a diyaudio-FirstWatt F6, Troels’ SBA-761 speakers, and I have the Wayne Coburn designed BA2018 preamp going together on the bench now. Your videos (starting with the Tech Talk’s on the NRD channel) have been an inspiration, and at some point in the near future I could see myself with one of your kits. I am intrigued by your vision (or the auditory equivalent 😊) of audio! Thanks for all you do here.

Just wanted to add my voice to the many who have already commented. It has been so much fun working on and listening to the CST-1 speakers you featured on this channel. It has radically transformed this year for me for the better. There are many times when I'm listening to or tweaking the HiFi setup that I totally forget that there's a pandemic going on. Also, I really appreciate the skills I've learned through your videos and mostly the confidence that I can get a soldering iron and get in there without destroying my gear. Of course this led to a cascade of other little projects and component upgrades, which have been a very welcome distraction in a very tough year. Thank you for all of the videos, and thank you for being responsive when I have had questions about my setup, and most of all, thank you for the many hours of listening enjoyment I've had this year!

It's really unfortunate the way many customers react to wait times. I'm glad you've explained what seems like common sense to business owners. Covid and the Government's knee-jerk response has wrecked small businesses. I love your videos and until tonight I had no idea so much went into making incredible speakers. I'm about to take on some DIY.

It was insurance assisted money for me replacing all my old Klipsch speakers leaving me with 20 8 inch woofers. I bought a callibrated microphone as well since we last spoke and learned A TON about my first build and can see how much improvement I get out of my 2nd one now. Tons of inductors pulled as well I'll store these away for any hobby projects in the future but trash the capacitors because they could blow from the smoke getting up in their stuff. :P house fire. Just sharing as well. Sounds like youve juggled a lot and I'm glad to hear people are enjoying your new cables which I admit to be curious about as well. Got all my woofers soldered differently lengthened wires up to though already. I'll mount all the binding post inserts I salvaged for plenty and plenty of wiring freedom. Then I'll measure it. That's fun too I'm sure you agree. :D Take care and I hope you can answer my question below. Appreciate it

Your spot on about all the changes COVID has brought to us all. I'm retired but was working as a contractor, I have not worked since COVID showed up the one thing that it did was give me a lot more time to listen to music. My DIY project of building a home theater/music room is taking a lot longer to complete, learning to be fully retired LoL. I truly enjoy your videos and your laidback style of helping everyone no matter their experience level with this hobby. My sincere condolences regarding your uncle. Earthwide tragedies have been the top news story for every culture. I've always been unable to afford the "best" gear but I have always been able to enjoy my record and CD collection to an agreeable level. Thanks to some fortuitous purchases of some pristine loudspeakers from goodwill along the way. And oh how I miss the early "wild west" days of eBay as well! Your open baffle beasts are far and away my favorite and would be the ones I try to build had I the ability to do so. Your approach cannot be argued against. Being able to justify your position over a video channel says a lot about your character and passion. All the best wishes for your growth in 2021! Thanks for making all these videos, I can't remember which one it was, but a few weeks ago I was watching one of your videos about improving the crossovers. Experimented with different capacitors on a B&W 601 S3 and 602 S3. Solen. Bennic. Then the clarity csa. Wow. Really nice subtle Improvement in a couple pair of older speakers I had going to those clarity's on the Tweeter. Timbre is about the same but the rough edges on certain high frequency sounds are gone . overall speakers are much smoother. Hard to believe changing the capacitor from mylar to a clarity made that kind of a difference but it did

Our business model was dependent solely on discretionary income and 2008 hit. 2007 was our best year ever and 2008 was half of that. That was a huge hit and took a great deal of momentum out of the business. We survived, barely. Keep up the good work and plan for a very rainy day. My wife and I both have talked several times over the past months that 2020 hasn't been all that fun due to COVID and more recently our presidential election. But, these things shall pass. I chose to transition into retirement at mid- year during all this (yes it was planned). I've taken the extra time I have now to refresh my interest in my stereo equipment. US supply chain has been very limited for decades. Toilet paper, and nearly everything else (except tofu meat substitute 😂) became scarce, and the supply chain couldn't catch up because their suppliers had limited capacity. This will be the problem for the next 3-5 years because no one keeps excess inventory due to computer management of supply. It's called "lean manufacturing", which is the latest evolution of "just in time" supply chain. But, a disruption causes big problems.
@swinde
@swinde 3 года назад
The "just in time" method builds to expected demand only. This allows the company to require less warehouse space as well as lower the taxes that states assess on businesses' inventories. At the manufacturing level it is great. But at the service level for the very manufacturer it is horrendous.

Don’t need to know EE principles. Danny gives you a schematic for the crossover along with the parts and you just follow it. Attach part A to part B and solder it. Danny also has a build video for crossovers. Also, look up some of the build threads on AudioCircle. They’ll sometimes show the crossovers people have built. If you can solder, you can make the crossovers.... Go for it. And, if you get stuck, ask for help...

@juanmillaruelo7647
@juanmillaruelo7647 3 года назад
Soldering is a cinch, I learned on my own when I was 12. Key: don't melt the solder on the tip of the iron, heat the joint and let the hot joint melt the tin. Keep everything steady (stable, twisted, etc) so you won't get a crystalyzed joint. 2-3 seconds to cool and harden. Should look shiny, not matte. That's it. Don't leave drops of solder around. Make sure nothing is shorting. Don't put tons of tin. Just enough. That's enough for a crossover board. PC boards, transistors, etc are more delicate and if you overheat you'll spoil stuff. But to build a speaker (or an old fashioned tube device) it's more than enough. Maybe get some junk old radio and practice a couple of hours. Dont burn yourself. Don't do it on your desk: you'll leave burn marks. Keep the iron tip clean, just with a thin film of tin. (rub on a wet sponge on your table) You'll be soldering in no time. The more you do it the easier it gets. Just a little detail: the first kit hi-fi at my parents' was put together by ...my mom! She said, "if you do it with your hands I can do it". And she did! A Dynakit Mk3 60 W amp and preamp. It worked fine! :-) So, get off your ass and do it. Anybody can. Don't carp about 'made in China'. Do it yourself. :-) LOL

Hey Danny sorry to spam you I just hope you see my question! I've got everything cut and I'm about to glue my 16x8" open baffle @Danny Richie Hey one final question before I glue it all together! I have not cut any deeper for the woofers to sit then mounting flush on the front baffle. Do I mount the front of the baffle board @ 6" on my 12" wings to get ideal 90* cancellation? ...or... do I mount the center of the 3/4" baffle board at 6"? (Aka the front sitting @ 5 5/8")
@dannyrichie9743
@dannyrichie9743 3 года назад
If this is for a low frequency driver or sub in an H frame then keep your wings the same length on each side.
@littlegandhi1199
@littlegandhi1199 3 года назад
@@dannyrichie9743 Okay! Thank you! I'm gonna trust you but do you understand why I'm a little hesitant with this? To take it to the extremes if the baffle is 6" thick putting the center of the board at the center of the wing would make the front of the baffle sit @ 3" in for my 1 ft wing. Now examining the distances... the front will travel 3" until it can wrap around the wing. The back wave has to make it through 6" of baffle before it even touches it's wing... making the travel distance 6"+3" They won't meet in the middle of the outside wing but somewhere closer to the back. Is this theoretically sound? If my 90* isn't perfect and it's off by 5* then my greatest point of silence (@ 45ft away) could make a big difference.
@dannyrichie9743

@@littlegandhi1199 Ah, now I understand your question. So why is your baffle 6" thick?
@littlegandhi1199
@littlegandhi1199 3 года назад
@@dannyrichie9743 It's just regular 3/4" I'm just saying wouldn't that example show an error in how to center the baffle making the cancellation not occur @ 90 degrees? I'm just assuming the center line of the wings should line up with the very front of the baffle for this reason. Seems like it will always travel longer out the back wave if you put the center of the baffle on the center of the wings (if you don't cut in a channel for your woofer to sit) I'd have to get out a couple microphones and check the time arrival to be sure
@dannyrichie9743

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of light, it was the season of darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair.

The toilet paper shortage was a real supply chain failure. I think vice did a documentary. The commercial and home TP supply chains are separated. Commercial quality and form factor are not compatible. The empty shelves were caused by supply being cut in half and everyone using only the restroom at home. Because of the value of TP it is not warehoused. This caused instant shortages. I am sorry for your loss. I think at least half a million Americans are lost by Spring.

Danny you are awesome. I am learning so much from you. 2 request: could you please introduce your team to us. Could you please make nores available on amazon.ca In Canada everything from the US cost about twice as much and amazon might be a way to alleviate that a bit? Thanks. Ps, I remember the days when in case of emergencies a person would by batteries for their flashlight. Now its toilet paper? Say what?

We are a small team and some of them don't want to be in front of the camera. And I am not sure if Amazon is the right fit for us just yet. We do ship a lot of products to Canada though.

Once news got out people were buying toilet paper, it forces other people to go out and buy incase it runs out.

Can someone please adequately explain how the last 5 feet of power cable can possibly make a difference? I've seen people take 2 dollar hosa cable and measure it dead flat from 0-100kHz on an O-Scope and just don't see how a wire can make an audible difference. I totally understand that capacitance at the microphone/guitar pickup level can make a difference if it is greater than 15 feet, but especially in a "high voltage" situation it just doesn't make sense that 5 ft of cable being a higher gauge or an exotic topology can make a difference. What about all that wire inside the house? Jason over at Schiit in one chapter actually explained how you could generate 100% clean 60hz power, so why isn't this being implemented?

Your water travels for miles and miles through pipes that lead to your house. And then how is it that the last feet feet change the way the water tastes? Because in the last few feet it passes through a filter. Likewise, that last 5 feet of cable is different than the rest. It is a filter. And a ton of RFI and EMI can be filtered out by the cable.

Thank you for responding and Merry Christmas. I would really love it if you would sit down with the people at audioholics who distinctly would claim that cables are not filters. They are resistors at best and you could possibly coil one so tightly that it becomes an inductor. Yes, it is possible to introduce noise into any copper cable. Lets get all the measuring equipment out and test all of this. I think a brand new device that loops back into itself would be the only good way to test a cable. I saw your video explaining that conductors functioning as antenna can be measured differently. Believe me, I sincerely understand that changing out cables can sound different, but either the science can not adequately explain the situation or it has and people hearing the difference between two brands of identical gauge cable are not willing to accept the results. I completely understand things like 20kHz NOT being the upper limit as to "what humans hear" because overtones going past 20kHz make a difference in the signal below 20kHz. but the thing is that there is a lot of science to back it up and nothing backing up the claim that a lowpass filter at 20kHz would sound indistinguishable from a 96kHz file with high frequency content past 30kHz. I've argued many of the myths about audio myself that on the surface seem like they don't adhere to scientific principles on the surface, but it is only because a basic understanding of how audio and electronics works is being employed to try to explain away a much more complicated subject. I understand the frustration when you understand something from a higher level and are lectured by someone with much less experience. I just don't see power cables or transmission cables at line level as being an issue that is worth debating much over. My signal path to my headphones for vocal monitoring is quite convoluted and complex connecting about a half dozen devices and I just don't believe by switching out the half dozen pairs of cables connecting all this that we will preserve fidelity in some way. Everything else in that signal path is 100 times more important than the wires. The noise floor on my bookshelf monitors is so vanishingly low I have to put my ears right next to the tweeter to hear their noise floor of the built in amp. I don't know if you are suggesting that only when audio is present would any of this noise manifest itself, but I used to have a $20 Behringer headphone amp connected to an Asus sound card and the noise floor was impossible to detect through the headphones. There was nothing you could do to hear it unless you ran it into more amps and had everything at half gain, which is obviously a deliberate attempt to hear the noise floor. Absolutely zero noise, period. The sound card's noise floor was something like 120db and the Behringer unit didn't add any noise, but maybe gave it 20db of gain. After experiencing this sort of setup as cheap as the components were, the situation is that there was literally no way to clean the signal up any more.

Well done Danny, though sorry for the effect covid has had on you personally. Re; high end wanting finished rather than kit, I suspect that is more of a US trend (due to your vanishing middle class). With your website(looks great) - I wonder if being more explicit about world-wide delivery would be an idea, just a statement; 'we deliver world wide, email your zip/post code for prices'. Also a simple typed list of speakers and cost of the upgrades you do. I have potential GR projects 'bookmarked' for the future and have pointed folks in your direction!

My daily is a Yellow 2006 convertible with a Grand Sport wide body. It has had the rear end gears lowered, a FTI triple disk converter (3800), a small cam, some head work (porting), headers, Vararam air cleaner.... puts 400 to the rear wheels and runs low 7's in the 1/8th at about 95 mph. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Zan-jHVGZ1o.html

Thanks for the replies Danny! When I was a kid my parents had a 67 Goodwood Green roadster, which they sold in 1986 when I was 10, so I’ve always had a passion for Corvettes (especially C2s). I had four different C5s of various flavors before the real ‘Adulting’ started and a 2-seat car just doesn’t work at the moment. Keep up the good work on the videos and best of luck in all your endeavors.
