Hi, thank you for another great video from both, you and Kristi I like the Yamaha old look and new features, but I was thinking during all the video that another gear is similar in features (HDMI, Dirac correction,...) and finally you talk a litle about it and it's the NAD M10 V2. More compact product, more modern style, class D amplifier, something diferent but also practical and nice. Regarding the black band that includes the screen, I agree with you Andrew that is a very intelligent and elegant way to include the screen in a classic design. Personally I think it's nice, and remember to me the vintage receivers that had wood pieces added to the chasis. In the other hand, as Kristi pointed correctly, if someone has any problem with it, it could select the all black design. But... I prefer the real contrast between the silver and black that the difference in the surface design between the black aluminium and the plastic surface and look in the screen. I have black Yamaha AVR (RX-V677) and a Yamaha BD-A1040 Blue-Ray/SACD that both like good, but I don't like so much just that difference between the black alluminium and the plastic screen area.
Subtle hint to viewers to actually watch the video to the end rather than stopping it a few minutes in to write a comment asking "how this Yamaha amp compares to...?"
I have the R-N2000A paired with the KEF R3s and I am enjoying the pairing. To be honest, I hated the R3s before and was looking for new speakers to purchase. I thought the R3s were boring and lifeless unless you turned the volume to 50% or higher. The R-N2000A woke the speakers up and showed me their true potential. I am really enjoying my setup now
I got the R-n2000a with a set of ns-3000 speakers. It sounds fantastic. Very natural, get seperation. I learnt the lesson to listen to speakers before you buy. I thought I wanted a KEF active speaker or Dutch&Dutch 8c, but when I listened to them, my ears got tired after an hour or so. With the 2000a+3000 setup, I listen to it for 11 hours straight one time and never tired of it. It's actually gotten better with time.
@robinsonbrand thanks. I really liked your review. You get that is about sound preference. One isn't necessarily better than the other (the audiolab is great if you like a forward sound) and more expensive isn't always better (the 1000 review showed that its more dynamic than its big brother).
I love the black bar at the bottom. I think it gives you the blend of the black and silver instead of just the all black I don’t find it to be distracting at all. I think it complements that and really makes it look great with the combination of black and silver just a little black on the bottom it’s awesome.
Team Andrew. I'm a sucker for almost anything Yamaha, and I love the VU meters and the variable loudness knob and all the other knobs. I don't mind the black bar at all.
Thanks for this Review. I got this amp and driving my Opera Quintas I am at the end of my journey. I bought it because of your review and am more than happy. 🎉
After having a little time to think about it, I really hope this Yamaha unit does REALLY well in the marketplace. Mainly because, if it does well, it will hopefully help to push the market into HDMI inclusion with more integrated units, which is only going to result in better choices for the consumer. We should all be cheering it on. 👍 Good job Yamaha!
Andrew and Kristi, I just absolutely love the importance and emphasis you two put on style, design, and aesthetics of equipment and pieces as a whole and how it truly does affect integration of one’s lifestyle and choices of picking wisely! It’s too often overlooked by others and not only in the RU-vid space. I have taken an influence for sure and designed my room and my sound system together to be seem less in appearance as to be most inviting for me and others when I love to show it all off! Great job as always, and thank you again!
Totally agree with Kristi, that black bar is poorly justified visually, of course it allows to display information, but that information never justifies the width of the bar. The full black version manages to disguise this situation better by not differentiating something that really fails to create a powerful difference. Love your videos!
Good morning friends! After learning that the black trim is functional, I am quite conflicted on my opinion of the styling here. Definitely like the combo of vintage vibes, modern technology, and HDMI support. I'm sure I'll add more when I finish the video, but I'm loving it so far! Great work.
Excellent review. I personally like the black bar at the bottom as I don't like having a display stuck somewhere within a silver faced component. It is a personal choice, however.
The Yamaha is a beautiful piece of gear. A very well done retro look. Maybe they could replace the black stripe at the bottom with frosted glass. It could still be a display but blend in better.
Love all the comparisons. Two comments. Forgot to mention what for me is the killer feature and so well implemented not to mention extremely rare; the very effective variable loudness control. Not everyone listens to music loud and this is essential to maintain the perceived frequency response at lower volumes. I would like to see a comparison with the Lyngdorf TDAI 1120. Thanks.
Nice review. The combo A-S1200 + external DAC/streamer could be more future-proof than the R-N2000A. Those devices seem built like tanks, so both will likely work forever. The DAC/streamer component will likely improve in the following years, whereas the amplifier part has reached a plateau. So, if you have the combo, you may buy just a new DAC/streamer and keep going when the DAC/streamer part becomes obsolete. With the R-N2000a, you are stuck in the present configuration or depend on software updates, but you have to change everything for the hardware update when the DAC/streamer part becomes obsolete. Price-wise, the R-N2000A is about 3.150 euros, whereas the A-S1200 is about 1.900 euros at the present time in Italy. With about 1.250 euros, which is the difference between the two units, you can likely buy an excellent DAC/streamer (i.e., the Eversolo DMP-A6 Master Edition for just 1.250 euros or the standard Eversolo DMP-A-6 for about 900 euros or whatever you want cheaper or more expensive). You will miss only YAPO probably. My apologies for the long comment, but I am just thinking about one of those two purchases and splitting hairs...
Been waiting for this review and comparison for months. Thanks again. I'm team Andrew and going for the silver. Growing up Dad and my uncle had CA 810 and CA 400 so silver is a no brainer.
Thank you very much 🙏 dear Andrew and dear Kristi for this great presentation of the Yamaha network amplifier. I had an A-S2100 for a very short time. A great device in terms of sound. Unfortunately I got a lemon. The amplifier failed three times within 3 months. It got stuck in the protection circuit when I switched it on. After that I was fed up with Yamaha amplifiers. Two Yamaha mixers have been working here for years without any problems. Keep up the good work. I appreciate your work very much. All the best and Servus from Bavaria
So sad to hear you had a bad experience with an older Yamaha amp. That sucks. Hopefully, if you feel the need to give them another chance Yamaha won't disappoint in the future.
I have to agree with Kristi on this one...I'd prefer the full black aesthetic...it just looks weird with the bar on the bottom...and I think it would make the meters pop a bit too with an all black front
We’ve had the R-N2000A for a couple months now and absolutely love it. We have the silver model with the black bar at the bottom (as Andrew demonstrated) and it looks great with our setup. We we’re definitely in love with the all-black model but weren’t willing to wait around for it to be available.
QOTD: This is one of the few, if any, times I disagree with Kristi. I like the way Yamaha has integrated it into their design. I don’t know what else one would have done that would have been better. If I were to upgrade from my Cambridge Audio CXA-81, it would be this or the SA-1200.
Adding Christy to this channel was one of the best decisions you ever made bro- she has good sense and balances you perfectly. The RN 2000A has a lot of bells and whistles, but it seems like the Audiolab 9000A seems the better component if one doesn’t want/need all of that other stuff. I mean, if you already have a separate DAC and streamer and don’t want that why pay for it?
Actually Re: Adding a Bluesound Node to an AS1200 - Buesound devices can learn codes from other devices, so you could use the Yamaha remote play, pause, forward buttons to control the node.
If you own Yamaha receiver which uses MultiCast and you struggle with sound stutter: Problem occurs more likely if you use higher bandwidth transmission e.g. FLAC 192kHz. It is observable just few seconds after starting playing new track. It affects many well known Yamaha products e.g. my WXC-50. The problem is unrelated to specific sound format (FLAC/AAC) or service (e.g. Spotify, Qobuz). Workaround: Switch off WiFi and connect Ethernet. Notice that you have to explicitly turn off WiFi. Plugging the Ethernet cable won't fix the problem by itself.
I'm a fan of the black bar. I'm even more of a fan of the font and mode of text display. For the longest time, the dot matrix or segmented LED look has made amp displays look like pagers from the 90's. Thank you, Yamaha, for getting it right.
Soooo glad I saw this! Until I saw this, I was thinking of eventually buying the Yamaha A-S1200 based on other reviews but I was disappointed as to its “too analog-ishness”. (I gave up LP’s back in the 1980’s.) With the Yamaha A-S1200 (at least “on paper”), it seemed too limited although I loved the look of its build quality and the fact that it weighed almost 50 lbs. among other things. I’m sure it sounded amazing too. But there was no HDMI, thus to me, really no GOOD way to connect a smart TV as well as stream anything directly via Qobuz, my Hi-Res service. It seems the Yamaha R-N2000A now answers all my concerns and I was elated when I saw this review. “The Future of Hi Fi” is right! Time to save my bucks now.
Or the 1200 (or 2200) in combo with a decent streamer such as the Atoll ST 200 (or 300) Signature - the sound quality is amazing at a competitive price 😃
Team Andrew for me on this one. I like the silver face, and the dark bar at the bottom is tolerable. Not sure if it was mentioned in the review, but Yamaha added a loudness control. That item is absent on the A-S1200, 2200 and 3200. It's a really nice feature to have when listening at lower volumes.
GREAT REVIEW! I have to go with Andrew here. Sorry Kristi! (I think it looks great with those Martin Logans in white with silver cones.) I am going from GoldenEar Tritons (you guys never reviewed any of their stuff huh?) to a 2 channel setup for my living room space. (Moved the GoldenEar SuperCenter X with SuperSats to my bedroom and have it as a 5.1 system.) Your reviews of these two (Yamaha and Martin Logans) is a sign from the universe!
I'm Team Andrew on this one as far as design/color choices. I looked at pictures of the Black design and they're two different shades and textures of black. I find that annoying. At least with the Silver design there are some contrasting/complementary colors with the silver and black. What would be cool though is if the meters on the Silver had a black background/white lettering to go with the black bar at the bottom. That's how I would roll...
As much as I like Audiolab design and concept just love this amp!! Definitely on my list when the time comes to upgrade my 6000A play. Oh, and I'm with Kristi this time: all black for the win!
Thank you for this detailed review of the Yamaha R-N2000A. I see that you have also tested a very similar product from NAD, the C399 model. Could you please briefly point out the differences. Which unit has the better sound quality? Since I am about to purchase one, an answer would possibly help me make the right choice.
Hi Andrew! Hi Kristi! QotD. Team Andrew! I like the silver and the meters and the knobs, and the black doesn't bother me a bit. Suggestion/request: Made in America list (if that's even still a thing. Other than Klipsch or spend 10k+ on any one single item)??? I don't know how international your audience is. If you have a lot of overseas viewers, maybe they'd like to support manufacturing in their respective countries as well??? Maybe worth having a couple "made-in-X" companies/products reviewed???? Just a thought. Thank you for your channel!!!
The black bar design at the bottom is a combination of art deco design and vintage.. in my opinion.. it looks great .. glad they did it. It's a distinct class for the piece.
I ditched surround sound years ago because I couldn’t fit it In My small home. I currently use a Sansui Eight with a Bluesound Node which gives me ARC so I also use it for TV. I honestly couldn’t be happier. Plus my wife likes the simplicity of it. Let alone the fact that it just sounds better than my old AVR
Happy to see the power meters. I miss my old Sony integrated amp from the 80s that had those blue power meters. I like the Silver color and I don´t mind the black strip.
In the past you had to choose between beauty and modern features, "do i want a cabinet of black capable components or do i want to sacrifice features for a better looking product". Its really nice to see manufacturers noticing and stepping up when it comes to providing beautiful products that you can easily use with electronics that were made in this century! I've never been impressed with YPAO (well i suppose i was before the first time that i used dirac) but given that this is a stereo receiver, its probably acceptable for most circumstances. Really nice product, thanks for spending the time with it. For me personally i think i would pick the 7000A at half the price or wait for a new 9000 with HDMI. What a great time we live in
The 9000A from Audiolab isn't likely to get an HDMI input seeing as how it JUST came out (unless they do a running change). The 7000A is the one with the HDMI input and in terms of functionality, minus app streaming and room correction, the two are very comparable. YPAO is basically Yamaha's auto PEQ. I prefer this approach, I just prefer to do my own PEQ. But I will take YPAO over nothing. Thanks for watching as always!
I have an A-S1200 integrated, which is basically identical to the amp portion of this unit's build. Like many Yamahas, it is a bit edgy and forward sounding out of the box. Leave it on 24/7 and let it break in for a long period of time. I turn the meters off on my A-S but it hasn't been "off" in 2 years. It sounds fantastic, crisp, accurate and smooth as a new baby's ass. Too bad about the black bar across the bottom, could do without that honestly if going with silver, which is otherwise awesome on this unit. My A-S is black as I got a great deal on it (1K off MSRP) and the rest of my gear is black, but I do like these in silver. Foregoing silver was a tough choice, but a grand off is a grand off - LOL
I would vote for the black unit aesthetically for sure. I’m betting though after a few months of ownership the users of the silver wouldn’t even notice the contrast and would miss the useful info on the display.
Being that it looks vintage , I would be interested in how it sounds with the Heresy IV’s . That would make for a stunning system. To hear and look at:)
as a R N2000 user I fully agree. powering Concept 50's and a SVS 1000 pro at the moment and experimenting with the best cable to match. I am amazed with the detail and musicality.
I'm also not a fan of the black bar. If the Harman Group would only send you guys the Arcam SA30 to review. I'm not so much a fan of it aesthetically, but it seems to pack a lot into a small plain Jane black box for less than the Yamaha. I would just love to see more reviews and comparisons that also include the Arcam.
My problem with HDMI is it’s backend purpose of anti-piracy, a role that it’s entirely failed at and has done nothing but serve to inconvenience and penalize honest users. All it takes to kill your digital input is a HDCP update that your manufacturer doesn’t bother pushing. It’s a shame toslink and the other digital inputs were never updated or expanded upon
Hi, for me, it looks like my friends Pioneer amp back in the 70's. It's gorgeous!!! Even with the black bar. Thanks for your work, you confirmed my choice of the Rotel A11... I love it...regards
Ha. I agree with Kristi 100% that black bar is a hard no! Luckily I prefer a black chassis. Also not something often commented on, but the binding posts and back panel as a whole look like it’s built for a lifetime
Because audiophiles have convinced themselves they don't need them or that it makes them less of an audiophile if they do...something like that. I'll throw in added cost as a treat. :-)
@@KristiWright As someone who rocks an analog integrated amp (Naim Supernait 3), Bluesound Node, subwoofer and uses a TV, I’m ready to order this today.
I absolutely love Andrew and Kristi. There conversation at the end is always my favorite. I ended up going with an Anthem STR integrated and a BlueSound node streamer to drive my Maggie 1.7i for 2 channel. I tried arc but prefer stock tuning. Plan to get a pair of rel T9x so will active ARC for bass management at that point.
@@jstoli996c4s I needed the anthem due to it damping factor plus being rock solid stable at 2 ohms to drive the Maggie’s. I was surprised at how good the onboard Dac is but not as excited about the ARC results. I think with duals subs I’ll see the benefit of it though. Have no experience with the Michi but did own the Hegel h160 and demo’d the h190.
Thank you for your informative reviews. The teamwork you and Kristi have make these reviews enjoyable as well. Your reviews are helping me formulate what I want and need from a receiver/amp. So many questions to be asked for another day to revamp my circa 2005 3.1 setup. Enjoy your weekend!
First, I'm a vinyl enthusiast so not a big fan of stereo room correction. Room correction requires sending the analog signal through an analog-digital converter then through the room correction equalizer, then back to analog through a DAC. If you are using a digital source, this is fine, but it makes no sense for vinyl. Second, I didn't realize that there was a big demand for stereo receivers (i.e., a built-in tuner) in 2023. No one I know listens to FM radio, given availability internet radio and streaming options. On a positive note, the HDMI connection for 2-channel TV is a plus. And, I don't mind the black stripe.
I don’t know when last I’ve listened to FM Radio🤔… maybe years back on my 20 year old Sony hifi system. EDIT: I think the black menu strip looks great!👍🏼
Stunning ! Love the look too ! Wondering why they don't implement eARC instead ? Maybe ARC is enough of stereo playback ? Glad to see HDMI-CEC too. It's probably one of the most under appreciated function ever the past 10+ years. No more 10+ remotes to control your system.
Andrew's question to Kristi: "Who are you?!" 😅 Too funny! I'm so glad that you reviewed this product. The features in the R-N2000A are amazing for the price! Also, great reasoning for stepping up to the R-N2000A instead of settling for the Bluesound for streaming.
I received the 2000a a few days ago. It replaced the Marantz 40n in my living room paired with Lintons. I put the 40n in my bedroom. The 2000a caused listening fatigue/ headache within an hour. It sounds leaner than the 40n, and offers more detail and separation in the higher frequencies. It is also more forward than the 40n, which gives me a headache. It changed the Linton's character too much. I'm sending it back to Amazon, and I ordered another 40n in silver from Safe and Sound at 25% off as an open box. The 2000a seems well built, but it's sonics are not for me. Andrew's review is pretty spot on, and I now know that I prefer a warmer, sweeter, non-fatiguing sound.
@@kcr2365that is the case with Yamaha high line amps. I own the R-n803 and it is anything but fatiguing with the Lintons. One would imagine that the 1200/2000/2200/3200 would be even better. Still, I’m looking at Accuphase for my next adventure.
@@billd9667 Great to hear, I own the R-N803D with Lintons, just like you. Match made in heaven. Stream both Tidal and Spotigy for the rest of the family. My CD player is CD-S2100, high end Yamaha CD player, though.
I agree with Christie about the black stripe being a negative to the design, so I might choose all black if I were to purchase one of these units. Another downside appears to be the lack of MQA support for those of us who enjoy streaming Tidal. Beyond those negatives, I like the connectivity, room correction, inclusion of hdmi is a plus for us as we use our two channel system to improve the sound of our TV set up without having to go full home theatre nerd in our living space. Love the vintage feel of those meters! Would seriously consider this unit for our next upgrade. So close to perfect for us.
Kristi is right. That black display bar kills the whole point of silver. Looking online, the black unit isn’t that much better either though def less clashy
Good day. You have been asking for an HMDI port on an integrated amp or a receiver for along while. I guess you were able to speak it into existence. 👍🏾. I have always been a fan of the Yamaha sound since they introduced the “natural “ sound receivers and the pure direct mode on their products. This receiver is more a person who is into music reproduction more and just wants the ability to listen through their speakers when watching the TV. I like VU meters, but I would choose the Audiolab because I believe it is the better looking of the two.
This amp basically solves every single gripe I have with modern Stereo components and their long stagnation they’ve been in. It’s well overdue to have HDMI in every god damn stereo amp today. Just do it. Also, personally, I don’t mind the black strip on the silver model, I think it looks kind of interesting, but that’s just me. Black unit looks better for sure though. It seems like this is a proper modern day stereo amplifier for those who want it all without sacrificing sound quality or build quality. Tax return can’t come sooner. Great video and conversation!
@@andrewrobinsonreviews it definitely seems like the one I should have for an extremely long time. It looks good, its sound signature is right up my alley and I know Yamaha builds good stuff, hell my trumpet of choice is Yamaha, so I know it first hand when it comes to quality. Great video!
Thanks for a great review! Re. Display bar, I’m on “Team Kristy”. 😊 Also, I noticed Yamaha has discontinued the r-n602 and 803 units that were more budget network receivers. While I like the “all in one” convenience, I decided to replace my 602 with an a-s2200 and external streamer/dac for priority on sound quality.
Good morning! Something great to digest with Sunday breakfast. All valid points in the post-review discussion. It reminds me of a resto-mod in the car world. Mostly classic look with the added racing stripe and modern features. This is very tempting for a 2.1 setup. Thanks for bringing it to us.
Just wanted to add to discusion about room correction. Dirac on my Arcam sa30 was a game changer in my 3.5x4.5m living room, and i urge every one to try it. It has a bit of a learning curve, and experimenting with distances between the measurments, but when you get it right, your sound WILL be on another level
I will be Team Andrew on this one. I am a big Yamaha fan. I do understand the critical reviews that the get from time to time, but they are still one of my favorites.
It is great to see a product come close to what you personally would like to own. An integrated AV amp with room correction is right up my alley! A Zone 2 switch to bring in a tape loop for a tape recorder or equalizer would be a bonus. The silver facade is great and maybe Yamaha could offer a light mode for the OLED display stripe to give a faux silver background with a black letter display? I would love to have one!
One thing that I would have liked to see on the R-N2000A is a line out for the few of us that still use recording devices. I agree with Kristi about the black display "clashing" with the silver face. If I decide to get one of these, I'll likely end up with the all black one to "eliminate the clash."
I’m for the integrated amp (S2200) plus something like the Node X because of tech change. A quality integrated amp will last 20 years easily. Tech ? 5 years before improvements and changes makes me want to update. Great video!
