Researchers from the University of Chicago, led by Ishanu Chattopadhyay, have developed an artificial intelligence (AI) system capable of predicting crime with a 90% accuracy rate one week in advance. This innovation, reminiscent of the premise in the movie 'Minority Report', analyses temporal patterns and geographical locations from public data on violent and property crimes.
The AI goes beyond traditional predictive policing methods, which were based on epidemic or seismic models, instead, it investigates city-specific patterns and predicts crime within areas about 300 meters in diameter. When tested using historical crime data from Chicago, focusing on violent crimes and property crimes, the results were promising.
In addition to predicting crime, the researchers analysed police responses by comparing arrest rates in neighborhoods with different socio-economic statuses. They found a bias, with wealthier areas having more arrests when crimes occurred, while arrests declined in poorer areas.
Despite its high accuracy, Chattopadhyay suggests that the AI should not be used to control the police but rather be integrated as a tool to enhance police strategies in fighting crime. This development is seen as a significant step towards more efficient and fair law enforcement.
