The F-35 has been upgraded several times, but its engine never has. To enable the capabilities planned for the next upgrade, known as Block 4, Pratt & Whitney is proposing the F135 Engine Core Upgrade - a “drop-in” improvement that will save billions for taxpayers and give warfighters what they need in a timely way.

Would be better if they just produce future F-35s with GE's adaptive cycle engines and have the old ones received P&W's core engine upgrades.

You’re assuming the GE engine would be just as reliable and that the test program to integrate the engine into the airframe would go smoothly, with little cost or delivery schedule concerns. In other words, something that has never happened before will happen just because it’s a theoretical option. The new engine core from Pratt will increase the thrust to 47,300lbs and increase fuel efficiency, without having to conduct a whole new test program for a new air-vehicle-propulsion system. The F-35C airframe would need to grow due to the location of the tail hook and the volumetric considerations for the bypass ducts on Adaptive Cycle Engines. The Adaptive Cycle Engine is a non-starter for the F-35B anyway, so now we’re looking at creating more diversification and complication where it isn’t needed, for a proposed capability that has not yet been proven. GE engines have been less reliable in F-16C/D Block 50s than the Pratt & Whitney powered Block 52s. The Super Hornet fleet is also suffering an unusual number of engine failures with the F414 that simply didn’t exist with the F404 powered baby Hornets.

What about the new Adaptive Engine Tech dropped into the F15-EX or "Loyal Wingman UAVs"?

You have to increase the mold line around the engine nacelles, cowlings, and likely the intakes, which means a whole new airframe. If I’m building a new airframe in the 3rd decade of the 21s Century, it better be a stealth airframe, not a 1970s airframe.

The F-35 is a multirole fighter jet that is currently being used by several countries. To enhance its capabilities, several upgrades are being considered. One of the most significant upgrades that is being considered is the use of the GE Adaptive Engine. This engine is capable of adapting to different scenarios and can accentuate the reverse-launch capabilities of missiles. This means that the missiles can be launched from shorter distances and can reach their targets faster and more accurately. Another potential enhancement is the use of vented wings. These wings have small holes that let air escape, reducing turbulence and increasing aerodynamic efficiency. This will provide better maneuverability and stability during flight. An electromagnetic (capsule) surface-to-air and air-to-air refueling system is also being considered. This system will provide a fast and reliable way to refuel the jet while it is in the air. It will also enable the jet to carry out missions that require a longer range. Armed landing gear is another possible enhancement. This would allow the F-35 to land in hostile territory while firing bullets at the enemy. This would enable the jet to carry out a surprise attack on the ground, which would be impossible with conventional landing gear. Finally, a rocket launcher ejection seat is being considered. This would allow the pilot to eject out of the jet while still carrying a launcher. The launcher would then deploy the rocket, providing the pilot with a way to take out enemy targets while escaping from danger. Overall, these enhancements would significantly increase the capabilities of the F-35, making the jet an even more versatile and effective weapon system.

The right solution is to switch to GE XA100 Engines. That is no upgrade. Its a new engine from Pratt Whitney stay away.

It’s amazing how either ignorant some of the “experts are”. The F-35 needs a new engine, not a core upgrade. It needs to be stretched 10% it needs the GR adaptive engine that will be the same as in the NEXGEN fighters which will drive costs down over the lifetime because of commonality among all the latest fighters) and it needs a 10% larger / longer wing. All of the above will make it possible to carry 8 internal long range missiles or a double rack for small diameter bombs literally doubling the internal weapons stores… Finally, I would add a Weapons system operator seat. We are asking two much of a single pilot with all the roles we are asking this platform to perform. Lockheed could have a new variant of the F-35 flying in 2 years, in production on 4 years. I’d then sell the current F-35’s in inventory to Taiwan, Poland, and anyone else who wants them at a large discount. This would allow the US to upgrade its Allie’s fleets at a cost they can afford while significantly improving the US’s fleet We should have no fewer than 3000 F-35’s, 1000 nexgen aircraft.
