Sir at 5:45 the numbers given seem very disjointed they either exceed or do not total to full squadrons. 389 + 145 + 127 + 126 = 787 divided by 12 is 65.5 and divided by 18 (average Squadron sizes in NATO) it’s is 43.7. Why not order 780, 792 or 810 which he would give you full squadrons?

I feel like it’s likely that the pee reservoir is filled with absorbent polymer like a baby diaper. Seems like a simple solution for a possibly catastrophic problem.

I have to agree with 100% of this video. Although it's not an entirely new problem. F-4's didn't hit their stride until the E model. Lawn-Darts weren't genuinely "desirable" until the C model around block 50/52. The F-14A was drastically underpowered. etc. PS: This video is a monumental piece of work. Superbly researched & edited!

The only groups with the money to afford to test f35 solo or against other fighter jets are world governments 😂 So far most of THOSE tests have led to purchase contracts. Every fighter jet program is a constant revenue stream for 20 years. Gripen, Rafale, F16, etc. Which mainstream fighter program is designed to make a few planes and then disappear? Your arguments don't even make sense

Perhaps the F35 program was never poorly conceived from a quality pov, rather it was poorly conceived from a value POV. (Americans will move mountains to maintain air dominance becasue its been made clear that if we dont - they consequences are grave. Probably all of our necks)

Without air superiority, we can literally see what happens. It becomes WWI trench warfare, and massive death waves caused by artillery bombardment. (Some more accurate than others.)

Lockheed Martin effed this up with their concurrency idea. In 2005 they sent in a new General to get the program back on track and he was kickin butts left and right. I also think they added too many gadgets. Auto landing? Auto Landing on an Aircraft Carrier??? But I also listened to a podcast with an F-14 test pilot and that plane took forever as well till it was up to snuff. They actually threw the F-111 engines in the Tomcat just to get it passed through congress, but they knew the problems with that engine, and it took way too long to get the F-15 engines in it.

The F-35 was always mind-blowingly ambitious. People focus on the B and its impacts on the airframe, but that was never where the real challenge resided. The software/electronics goals are agressive even by current standards, and they were largely conceived and architected in the 1990s and 2000s. Honestly I'm surprised that it has turned out as well as it did. I'm not surprised that the pre-TR3 hardware turned out to be underpowered relative to the program goals. They were projecting 2 decades out when they created it, and we software people always tend to underestimate from that far out.

So basically the challenge of making the F35 was not the ace combat cool looking jet part, but the magic orb they managed to forge into it which lifts the fog of war and gives you the ability to peer unto the thoughts of your enemies as they are manifesting... PS... R2D2 stands for Regrettably Repeating Delivery Delays... we are currently still at C2D2 but don't worry, we will eventually get to R as well 😅 Jokes aside, thanks for the class sensei, it was a mind boggling amount of information to absorb, thank you for all the hard work.🙏

Fortunately the new aircraft programs by the AF and Navy are separate. A navy aircraft can be modified for air force use. The separate need of a STOVL was smashing a square peg into a round hole.

@@thesupreme8062 … IMHO had a STOVL version requirement not been in the joint strike fighter the Lightening II would have been in serial production ten years earlier. Of course STOVL is valuable. But at serious cost to development of the JSF program. Time delays & additional complexity and costs. To me the turd in the punchbowl is the USAF not buying any F-35B’s. Despite claiming to support the Army. On the positive side foreign navies are buying the B variant. So aircraft carriers are back! I’m curious to see if the French Navy will buy any C variants

We can put small carriers and helicoptee destroyers to work. The extra effort was worth it imo, realistcally the usa never needed them since they male ample use of catobar carriers.

Do you remember about a month after Trump was elected president, he blurted out on twitter that he saw that our new stealth planes had the ability to turn invisible, and everybody thought he was just being stupid, and that he thought our stealth jets could larp like "Wonder Woman's" invisible jet? This 88 year flew since he was 16 striving to become a commercial pilot but gave. Along the way I found often not everything worked. Those planes are like a cycle compare to 2023 planes. I bet it's a real challenge and expensive to keep everything working with today's aviation technology. Good luck to our pilots especially anyone crazy to become a Naval Aviator.

On the contrary, its stupid cheap. Software is alot easier/cheaper to fix compared to mechanical problems. Dad got a Tesla. All its recalls are handled over the air. Features you would wait a whole model year for, just gets downloaded the next day. The transmission never breaks down, since its handled electronically. (ESC's) Same story with the F35. One component that would normally be used for multiple things, can be shared to be used for different things aswell. The gpu handling the 360 VR FLIR headset on the F35, can also be used to run inference on some AI model. The radar can also be used as a camera to image stuff, like satellites do.

Every time I watch or read about 5th or 6th gen aircraft, it’s so easy to see why delays and problems are endless. They’re maddeningly complex. Even a new jet engine design seems simple in comparison.

OMFG, when agile SW development was introduced in AUTOMOTIVE, I said that: "I hope Aerospace and military doesn't do that", now, it's clear that they use Agile methodology to develop SW for F-35 but they didn't go full agile but use a mixed development process with Waterfall processes and that, probably led to the mismanagement of the SW development... That's my take, based they planned the deployment packages...

This DAS thingy, I was sceptical of how effective it could be and thinking that "a better pilot can definitelly do the same with 4th gen instruments" until I had a amateurish example experience of something like that in game called VTOL VR where a fictional F-35 like plane and fictional 4th gen plane (with HMD) are available to fly... honestly having the transparent cockpit and sensor fusion is like a cheat code. You have arcade-game-like of situational awarenes in a furball just by looking somewhere.

Whoa! This is one of the most informational videos I have ever seen. I'm sure not every system of systems was provided, but boy there was a lot to get your mind around. Bravo on a well done job. I couldn't imagine the research it took to piece this together. Worse even would have to be a project or program manager working on the F-35. I'm curious if all systems on this supercomputer aircaft work in an agile development or only some. Every 6 months for software updates seems like a long time, but software that breaks is one thing, software that breaks and causes life, crucial weapon and sensor failures is a whole other deal. I can't imagine the brain power and mental fortitude to power through to get things right and solve the issues for a multi-billion platform. Makes my head hurt just thinking about it. My gosh we've got to have quantum computing working by now and if not on the F-35, definitely on NGAD. Sheesh!

Re the scenario you explore at 41.35, I presume the networked nature of the F-35s might also cause the sensors from other platforms - other F-35s, SAMs, ships, AWACs, etc, - to point THEIR sensors at that patch of sky, too. An engine with a slightly improved engine core and new cooling systems are expected to be available at about the same time as block 4 although they are not part of it.

I've asked so many times without a clear answer. You've answered it this time! The block4 is an update that's retrofit-able to existing aircraft (minius the 150 earliest). Fantastic! I didn't understand this correctly until now. So the engine updates also intended to be a retro-fit?

The engine upgrades will be a upgrade by Pratt & Whitney (the current engine manufacturer) to the core of the engine, as I understand it, it will be retrofitable as well

@@douginorlando6260they’ve already earmarked those non-upgrade capable engines & airframes for use as OpFor aircraft being modified to appear as close as possible on radar and EME to planes we can expect to face. It’s a good use for nondeployable airframes

Repurposing the hundreds of earlier LRIP f35 as opfor would be a face saving proposal for JPO and LM, plus a huge money maker for LM. F35 is incapable of matching the flight envelope of 4th gen fighters, so it can not replicate op for aircraft performance.

I wonder if all those features are usable or manageable in a tactical environment, even with the support of the advanced automation (a k. a AI). Also, it seems that the operation of this weapons system will be eye watering, while the training needs for the air and ground crews will bw well beyond the current standards.

I don't think it was necessarily too early, I think it's more about the fact that the f35 is a large paradigm shift in modern warfare. So they are basically treading new ground that hasn't been tread before which makes it harder than just the normal improvement in hardware we've seen in the past. I also think that the f35 is being used as testing ground for technologies that will become part of the f22 replacement.

Changing the CPU might not be that big of a problem. If there is a virtualization layer in between. Unless you go to a completely new underlying architecture. Like from intel to arm.

Its unlikely they use any sort of virtualization on the F35. They use RTOS's for a reason. No chance their gonna virtualize stuff. F35's are like cars, and have alot of independent computers that work together. One going down shouldnt result in the whole thing going down. Each avionic system prolly communicates with eachother through some bus system. One single computer doesnt handle everything. While its prolly hallucinating, ChatGPT says some of the computers use PowerPC RISC. Assuming its true, if the electronics were more monolothic, it would prolly be using x86 or arm, which it aint.

These upgrades will make this aircraft an even more phenomenally capable military asset, they might be very expensive but they'll bring a lot of new technologies and lots of new toys to the party. Even though the Raptor and Typhoon are the sexy hot rods of the skies, the F-35 is more like the geeky nerd of the skies which is more a whole lot more deadly than people think.

Finland plans to use the F35 block 4s until 2060s (maybe they will be updated too eventually). Therefore it likely does not really matter if we only get them by 2030. The F18 that Finland currently has will likely last until then. That still leaves 30 + years of useful lifetime.

They plan to use F-35s till past 2060, but they won't be Block 4 at that point. They'll be Block 7/8/9/etc .... by that time.

One thing about modern warfare, is that its all about the electronics. Aerodynamics is a mostly "solved" field. Only practical future modifications that could be done on the F35, would be the powerplant and the avionics. F35's are probably gonna be the modern day equivalent to DC-3's.

In this respect I remembered the T-10 (original Su-27), the chief designer went against building it when the country was about to order the factories to put it on printer as all the documents, graphs & drawings were passed to them. He convinced most of the team while some military heads replied threateningly, the mister of aviation said to the chief designer "you are lucky this is not 1937 now". Just thought of mentioning the parallel of receiving something earlier than completed or hitting all the goal posts of the project.

I used to work at Lockheed Skunk Works at Palmdale, and I would give LM engineering a C grade. On my first day at F35 CDA compartment. I made them move the MLGs away from the roll jets.

F35 is too big to fail, but I do think that the aircraft produced is amazing. Two things can be true at once: 1) F35 program was too bloated and mismanaged. 2) The aircraft itself is a technological marvel that doesn't have many competitors. From what I've seen, NGAD (both versions) looks to be much better run (especially since the USAF and USN programs are separate) and hopefully leverage the management lessons learned (i.e. no more concurrency). To me, the F35 is like the Zumwalt and LCS., something experimental doing too many things at once. The difference is that international partners made F35 impossible to cancel.

You keep throwing Kadena around like you've figured out some big secret 😂 F35 can launch from carriers, carriers can move anywhere at a speed that is difficult to constantly track. China has recently proven they can hit a moving target on sea with land based cruise missiles, but only with: A) Real time targeting data, and B) A target which isn't blasting the missile with jamming signals, firing defensive missiles in response, and surrounded by an entire battle group doing the same thing. China could conceivably saturate the defenses of a single carrier group with an all-out effort of drones and missiles, but not 6 or 8 carrier groups at once. Even before these carriers arrived, b2 and b21 stealth bombers would be wreaking havoc on enemy SAM sites and anti-ship missile batteries, along with command and control and literally anything else the pentagon marked on a map. F35 as a system is a minimally relevant part of this war game, and Kadena airbase is even less relevant than that. Cope in a better way

China will win no matter what, just ignore the pacific ocean and surrender immediately." Based on this type of repeated propaganda, it seems the intelligent choice is for the US military to CONTINUE developing 5th and 6th gen fighters, and continue to mass produce them, along with more supercarriers and air bases in the Philippines, Japan, and elsewhere.

The F-35 is still in the trial stages. The program is incredibly new and may take a decade to solve, which is not unlike several programs of the not-too-distant past.

Another issue with IFF is the possibility of spoofing an enemy IFF response. Presumably this would require capture of the day's codes or something like that, but certainly a possibility. At least for a software-defined radio?

I wonder how fast the F-35 can go with that body shape even after upgrading the engines. I don't think this shape is well suited for the fluid dynamic properties of air at anything near hypersonic speeds, but that doesn't mean it can't push M2.5 with this shape.

It can't even get to mach 1.6 It has horrendous aerodynamics. The intakes shoke the engine, it is draggy af and it can't even supercruise. If you see the requirements (of the usaf) for a plane to be considered 5th gen, you'll notice the fail35 isn't one at all.

@antoniohagopian213 I think it's silly to say an aircraft isn't 5th gen because of it's speed. The reality is that speed isn't quite as important when you can target someone over the horizon and operate with stealth near hostile territory.

@@antoniohagopian213 Shes not a pure interceptor so absolute speed is not a thing for her. Not to mention shw would have to be far larger to house the fuel necessary to maintain such speeds even at super cruise. Note the russian interceptors in their large size. Everything has trade offs and it was to be stealthy and information focused to share the load whenever possible. She also not too shabby as a dog fighter if she screws up. The F35 will serve with distinction in its service life.

@@antoniohagopian213 Speed is bad for stealth or fuel consumption... it's irrelevant since pilots rarely go over Mach 1.6... and fight most of the time at subsonic speeds. Moreover, since it carries everything inside (lots of fuel, weapons, pods...) an F-35 will be more manoeuvrable and fast than any other Gen 4+ aircraft loaded for combat. People like you just seem to believe pilots actually fight as if they were performing some airshow... which means you don't understand a damn thing about aviation.

The infrared sensors are absolutely incredible I couldn't believe it, and I said these guys are selling us a dream they're not going to really make this but they really did it it's fascinating me the situation awareness that the pilot has a new ability to attack and the new am-9 Sidewinders they turn around these ones these missiles are there are ones you don't have to turn around and shoot the enemy down you don't have to have on boresight, the missiles like in the James Bond movie You Only Live Twice, when he was flying that little helicopter and he pushed the button that said AA missiles and the missiles went around and shot the helicopter oh, well that fantasy is now a reality the F-18 was a remarkable program, got a lot of ridicule from the Press, like the engines were too heavy stupid things that should give us an indication of how some politicians are nowadays, what made the F18 magnificent was its ability to fight its way into anime conflict with a deliver missiles and defeat any are combatants on the way to completing their mission and they performed remarkably

Reminds me alot of Teslas. Lockheed also runs AI models on missiles, that use alot of the same tech Tesla uses. Trained on inferencing ground data with its own internal maps, incase GPS is unavailable. 90s Tomahawks also did the same, but I imagine are much less reliable.

Launching any missile from the ground in the FOV of IRST system is suicidal with the level of automation of detection and tracking F-35 will have or possibly already has. Everybody will know where the missile was launched from.

After watching this video, and seeing the performances of Russian Armed forces including Russian Air Force.. there is no way Russia could hold its own against NATO in a conventional warfare for a month. Russia would def. use their tactical nuclear when they finally meet NATO in a direct confrontation.

Just comes to prove how much of a p****y they are as a military. They can't win via conventional means that they would be willing to fight via nuclear escalation as if they think they could win. Masters of a dying world. China is also on that plate with their mostly fake Navy. Their medium range missiles are a problem though and only because we were in a treaty bound not to make similar weapons. But we are free of that now and actively working on them as well. Soon China won't even have that as a threat.

My god, it must be great to be in the American defence industry. They seem to be able to have money literally thrown at them all the time. The pentagon asks for an 'affordable' strike aircraft, it ends up being one of (if not the!) most expensive defence programmes in history and then, almost before the paint dries on the new jets, the manufacturer 'suggests' updates which (surprise, surprise!!) Will cost billions more, and everyone just accepts it! It's crazy!😮

This is how we build software, we start with a minimum viable product and then continously improve. It is far superior than trying to do everything all at once
