This effect is absolutely REPRODUCABLE in Ableton's SESSION VIEW. You could add as many effect tracks as you wish and randomly bounce/fade between them (or COMBINE them) using Dummy Clips to control Effects Sends. ALSO you could Randomize the Drum Pattern using Midi PROBABILITY in Ableton's Piano Roll, so RIGHT ON 😎👍🎶💥

The VCA Matrix by 4ms is also a module worth mentioning if you're into dynamic signal routing. If you control its VCAs with a good full-featured mod source like the Acid Rain Maestro, it can do A LOT for you!

I was so close to getting one when starting out recently. I went with the behringer 130 ultimately because it was $80, and my excuse for getting that instead was that I "only" needed to spend ~$500 to get started. But now, instead of the 4ms VCA matrix, I find myself looking at stuff like xaoc Tallinn, LPGs, or even weirder stuff like Schlappi's Boundary.

I’m probably gonna try to make a patch today in FL Studio just to try out this workflow. Seems really freakin fun running LFOs/Envelopes to random parameters. Creating Patches have been more fun than finishing music for me lol

It's honestly kind of mental to me that these sort of open-ended dynamic modulation / routing shenanigans aren't a standard feature of DAWs in 2022. It's something that would be utterly trivial to do in software, but for some reason we're still stuck with virtual tape-and-mixer workflows that are often *less* versatile than the hardware world they're emulating. It's getting better recently, but that traditional track->channel strip->mixing buss structure has some ridiculous inertia.

The complication of adding flexible signal routing to a DAW is really not prohibitive. Latency compensation algorithms can be developed that are flexible enough to handle subsample signal routing and even feedback chains across multiple plugins.

In Bitwig you can use the modulators really easily, in Ableton yes a lot of work with modulation.

Modulation in Ableton is also crazy easy. You just hand-draw or map them within the Automations panel. *"Automation" = Modulation* if you only use it as such, it just also has some additional track-building uses than what modulation means in a Modular context.

Effects go back into the switch so it’s always routing the active effect to the same two outputs (two because stereo)

a friend of mine has used a 2-channel pioneer battle mixer in live pa's to great effect (pun intended)... the fx mode selector was definitely not designed to take such abuse, though

IMHO: Yes, technically interesting but not musically - although I generally like glitchy effects and stuff. I think using complex analogue gear let's you completely overrate the musical outcome because of the huge effort you have put in. It must be good because you have spent hours and used expensive gear. AFAIK this is called "effort justification bias" and even super-musical and talented Andrew is not safe from it. However, this is just my opinion, it's all a matter of taste and others might like the outcome.
