UPDATE 10/5/23: I've been emailing with Flextail about the issue of the pump turning off by itself. They have assured me that it is isolated to my device, as it's a pre-production sample and that the full production product has already had this issue addressed. So it should not be an expected problem at all.
@jon27d
@jon27d 9 месяцев назад
That's great and all but why would they send you a version that has a known flaw? I'm definitely not going to be an early adopter on this. I'd love to see what the full production issues are first.

Thanks for the update. You have one of the better gear review channels on YT. But this one struck a chord with me because you quickly recommend the product and insist we all use your link, however at the time you released this, the issue you were experiencing had not been addressed. It’s just not right to give a glowing review of a product when in the same breath you tell your viewers there might be an issue with it. I think all gear reviewers can learn a lesson from The outdoor gear review. I don’t always agree with him or his take on certain products, but he’s 100% uninvested and will NOT recommend a product, no matter how much he likes it, unless it’s free of defects and he’s certain it will perform as advertised. You jumped the gun too quick on this one, likely because you get some round about benefit from your quick link or the sales of this product.

I received mine on 1/12/24 and it has the same issue of turning itself off. Also, I found the pump doesn't fill my pad firm enough to sleep on. The air output just isn't enough in my opinion. I'm sending mine back.

Mould growth in the pad from inflating by mouth has been long disproven at this point (3-4 years?). Gear Skeptic nicely summarised the evidence on his channel in the past few weeks. I'm 60, just averagely fit, and have no problem taking my time and 20-25 deep, slow breaths, to blow up my pad. No breathlessness, no dizziness, no drama! That's after 20 miles and often at altitude. Anyone who can backpack hours per day has taken thousands of deep breaths during the hike. Why all-of-a-sudden is 20-25 more of those such a big deal? Our manufacturer-installed, OG pump sacks have been working just fine - we've just demonstrated that for the past 8-10 hours of hiking! Honestly, it's just marketing genius to make folks think they need yet another gadget that no-one who is capable of backpacking actually needs. it's one more gadget to charge on a longer trip, and all these gadgets then require a bigger battery bank, and before you know it you are carrying an extra 3-4lb of "comfort stuff" that adds towards less actual on-trail comfort! Genius!

After seeing it on Dans vid I bought it last week. What i loved was that it can do more than 3 pad fills (esp during cold weathers abuse on batteries). Im glad you tested hard. I like the non lantern design too. So cool they went with a good battery too, same as my olight. I hope like they said the turning off is just a preprod. Think ill use my pump sack as the pad sack as a backup in case of technical issues. So stoked on the size and weight. Love the review!

My current sleeping pad has a manual pump built in near the foot area. It was a relatively inexpensive no name Amazon purchase but it's held up well so far. Eventually I will need to upgrade to one with some actual insulation and lighter weight materials but it's done the job so far through deer camp, backyard campouts, and backpacking trips.

I ditched the pump sack for my Thermarest, to lose a few grams and a little more space in my backpack. Since 3 years, I'm blowing up the same pad (NeoAir XLite) with my lungs and it didn't got mold or anything. Yes, it's a chore, but also boiling the water for cooking and streching my muscles. I also don't like to bring more electronics which could die from low temp or just stop working for some reason. It would just frustrate me the entire hike, that I carry a dead weight. :D It's a cool gadget tho for glamping, but that's another story! ;)
@BackcountryExposure
@BackcountryExposure 9 месяцев назад
A lot of it comes down to personal preference, right? Like choosing to carry a chair or not. For the mold, I actually made a video cutting open a NeoAir Xlite I had used for about 7 years, and it didn't have any mold in it. But I know that in really humid areas there have been people who absolutely have mold growth.

If they improve the new one by adding a recharging port I might be tempted. However the lack of a lantern option kind of limits it in that if I want that option, I'm giong to have to use either my headlamp, or pack a separate lantern, thus negating the weight savings.

I have needed to top off my pad with my pump sack after using my flextail pump cause it wasn’t hard enough. Have you needed to do that?
@BackcountryExposure

Yes, the Zero Pump doesn't have quite enough power to get a pad super firm, or at least as firm as I like my pads to be. So 2-3 extra puffs of air gets it topped off.

I don’t recall the size of the valve for the Q-Core Deluxe. But I know for my zoom UL I use the attachment that’s wider. Maybe that’s not helpful.
@JarradShaw
@JarradShaw 6 месяцев назад
That does. I think I found the wider “B1”(?) fits in the inlet port. It seems to push enough air through for the air valve to move and not be a restriction. Thanks Devin.

@@BackcountryExposure Thank you for answering my question ! I read the mold thing in the pads are a myth. I hope it is, because blowing in the pad extra air after using the pump kind of breaks the usefulness of it on that matter. What is your thought on the matter ? @Woupsme
@Woupsme 4 месяца назад
I bought this and their Zero Mattress. It pumps up the mattress just fine, but I simply can't get it to deflate. Isn't it just as simple as turning the device around for the deflate port and use it exactly the way you inflate with the same nozzle?
@BackcountryExposure
@BackcountryExposure 4 месяца назад
If the pad doesn’t have a two stage valve, meaning a one way valve and a way to pull it all the way open, then you’re stuck with holding down the one way valve to deflate as you push air out. The pump won’t deflate a pad that only has a single stage valve as it will just suck the rubber flap closed.
@woodchip2782
@woodchip2782 9 месяцев назад
Thanks but I still prefer my pump sack over a battery pump. When I have to, I use the sack as a semi dry bag to carry stuff. When the battery of the pump runs out at a critical moment you’re stuck blowing your mattress with your lungs. Then, you have to carry this pump and remember where you stashed it and hope it didn’t drop out at some point. Did the switch turn on by itself during that day of climbing? When I store my Nemo mattress the pump sack is rolled into it so I never have to look for the pump when I pack. One less thing to look out for when preparing for a hike.
@BackcountryExposure
@BackcountryExposure 9 месяцев назад
I think the problem of remember where you put it is not really a problem. I just put it in my ditty bag with my head lamp, battery bank, etc. I do like the use of the pump sack being used as a dry bag of sorts. That is if the pump sack has an opening large enough. The Nemo Vortex doesn’t function well for that.

I'm confused, lots of talk of extensive testing but no data being shown from that testing? The most important thing I've been trying to confirm about this pump is how many minutes of good run time should anyone expect from that battery before recharging? You say it will be good for a weekend or and 4+ day trip, is that for just one pad inflation per day? how big of a pad? is that including deflation as well? For couples or groups with multiple pads is this going to run out in the middle of a trip? This is why we need to know the expected run time, it is a very important data point and I'm shocked that it wasn't mentioned in this video
@BackcountryExposure
@BackcountryExposure 9 месяцев назад
I do mention in the video that I have run the pump for a solid 10-12 minutes at a time as a consistent run time. Sorry for not giving an exact number of inflations... But you'd easily get 10-20 inflations of a pad from one battery, before needing to recharge. The variable there being the size and thickness of your pad. But if I can run the pump for 12 minutes or so continually, before it starts to get too hot, then that's a data point there. If your pad takes 60 seconds to inflate. That's at least 12 inflations. Hope that helps.
@soggywilson
@soggywilson 9 месяцев назад
so how much runtime (not continuous) do you think you can get out of that battery? I think that eliminates the pad volume variable. The company has stated some estimates for the number of inflations at an average inflation time, but I want to see if people have confirmed those numbers. @@BackcountryExposure

@BackcountryExposure
@BackcountryExposure 5 месяцев назад
I see your point, however, sleeping pads are just like your mattress at home. Everyone has different body types, weights and preferences on how firm they want their pad. Saying it makes me unreliable is being pretty nit-picky. I don’t know of any electric pump that will accomplish what you’re asking for, or a pump sack accomplishing the same thing. If the pump helps you get air into your pad easier, and you need to add some air by mouth to get the firmness you want, then what’s the big deal? Just get outside and have a good time.
@frbergkotte
@frbergkotte 5 месяцев назад
@@BackcountryExposure I appreciate you taking your time to write a reply. For a sleeping pad to reach its full insulation value it needs to be blown up somewhat solid enough. This pump is not capable of reaching close to that. Therefore extra air needs blown into it. Blowing air in creates mold as you state in your video. Using a pump sack defeats carrying this pump. My issue with your video and approach towards this pump is that it doesn't state the cons enough for people to make they're own decisions. It's too much of a sales pitch other than an honest review imo. And that is one of the big problems of all the plastic shit spread around the globe. We all keep buying too much plastic that ends up as landfill. If there's a more natural way of doing things then we should try to prioritise that if we want to enjoy our beloved nature for many years to come.
