Last August, a 16-person team made up of UCSC undergraduate students, alumni, and faculty made a long trek to the Pacific island of Okinawa with one goal goal in mind: to embark on an ambitious historical treasure hunt. Their only clue: a small collection of photos taken in the 1950s that captured the culture and strength of a post World War II Okinawa. These photos are the product of Dr. Charles Eugene Gail, a U.S. soldier with a passion for photography stationed on the island during the Korean War. Gail’s pictures were the spark that ignited the Gail Project, a team of diverse students from a wide span of majors united to bring Okinawan culture and history to America, a country with countless ties to the Pacific island, notably the presence of the largest concentration of U.S. military bases in Asia.
Last Fall, The Gail Project used the knowledge they gained on their journey to Okinawa to create two separate exhibits on the UCSC campus that drew in hundreds of people, including Okinawans from across the country, excited to see the story of their home island told at last. With your donation, The Gail Project can create new internships and help fund another trip in Summer 2018. This expedition will serve to find Okinawan individuals in Gail’s photos and preserve their stories while we still can as well as inspire undergrads with an education that they can not obtain anywhere else. Please donate to save their stories.
