Support OMI and UCSC Undergraduates! givingday.ucsc.edu/giving-day...
The Okinawa Memories Initiative is a multidisciplinary public history research project exploring the postwar history of Okinawa, Japan. We are committed to sharing and uplifting the stories of a historically silenced and underrepresented community.
For over a decade, the Okinawa Memories Initiative (OMI) has been an interdisciplinary, primarily student-based history project dedicated to creating a more multi-vocal and equitable future where underrepresented Okinawan voices shine through in media and in history. We look to honor their stories, their struggles, and their triumphs, all while fostering a deeper understanding of the diverse and vibrant life force of Okinawa and the Okinawan diaspora.
But we can't do it alone.
Join us in this community-driven collaboration that inspires students as they embrace their passion for preserving heritage. From oral histories to captivating photography, compelling videos, digitizing archival materials, and thought-provoking exhibitions, we empower students to apply their unique skillsets to this monumental passion project. Through OMI, undergraduate student researchers develop vital professional and academic skills through hands-on public humanities research and career-building experiential learning opportunities.
Funding from last year's Giving Day allowed us to continue the OMI Scholars Program, a collaboration with the Okinawa Association of America to digitize its photo archive, conduct oral life history interviews with its members, and create exhibits. Our thirteen 2023 OMI Scholars gained professional experience in digitization, oral history interviews, media production, archival research, and design.
With your help, we will be able to fund a third cohort of OMI Scholars, connecting the next generation of public historians to meaningful work in the field. This year, we would like to expand OMI Scholars to send student researchers to Okinawa for the first time since the pandemic. Sending students to Okinawa will both give us the opportunity to expand our research and give our undergraduates the opportunity of a lifetime.
Your gift on Giving Day will directly support vital student research that enriches our understanding of Okinawa's past, current, and future. Your donation expands opportunities for undergraduate members to develop the essential skills necessary for their success as students, as well as after they leave UC Santa Cruz.
