What a herculean effort. Vital Lacerda games are ALWAYS extremely layered and deeply nuanced. To watch you distill it all into a 35 minute video is laudable. Thank you.
Thanks for another awesome video, Rodney. I have to say you're simply the best game tutor ever, in addition I have to say that watching your videos made me enter the awesome "world" of boardgames ( I started when I first saw the Wrath of Ashardalon videos in 2012). Thanks a lot for this awesome channel!!
Played this for the first time last night after watching your video. I will say this video helped with many things like setup and rules but it didn't really make you understand at all at how the game played. Granted this game is very involved and is probably the heaviest game I own, i just feel like the only thing this video COULD use is a small area telling you how the general flow of the game like how you Discover/ buy art -> getting contracts and selling art -> to manipulate attendees and hire assistants along with increasing fame of artists and getting into international markets. Overall though, thanks Rodney and the rest of the Watch It Played crew, your videos are a huge asset to gamers. I was shocked and relieved this video came up when i searched for a how to play!
Glad you found it helpful Daniel. A lot to cover here to be sure :) Probably having the player aids in hand when watching would help too. IF you want to see a little more about how the game is played, we have a full play through as well. Cheers.
Brilliant ! As always ;-) My wife hates learning new games' rules. But after watching this video she started winning with me from the beginning :) ( I note that I have already played twice in the solo version of The Gallerist). She loved this game a lot immediately :)
Fantastic teach! We have watched this a few times now. Very difficult game. I would have been so much more lost without this video! We did a short mock run last night and then rewatched the video and it super helped. Sometimes we do that after we've tried a few rounds. It helps it stick!!!
I find the same thing. Sometimes I have to read the rules a bit, then watch a bit of a video and then go back to the rule book, before it all comes together. Have fun playing!
Just wanted to give you MAJOR props bro, for taking the time to not only learn this, but to explain it so cleanly. Ive been wanting this for months but I always felt its gonna be a bit to complicated. But now after your vid, Im gonna give it a try soon. Thanx so much !
The Gallerist is my fist Vital Lacerda game. I was so happy to see you had a rules runthrough for it as I was able to jump into trying some sample rounds right away to get a feel for the game.
Thanks for this! I've been looking at this game for a while, but have been intimidated its weight (both literally and figuratively). After having watched this, I've bought myself a copy and can't wait to get it on the table. You rock!
Wow! It sure was a lot of work to do this video and I loved the order you used to explain the actions. Very well done, Rodney! Hope you could show us a playthrough too.
Happy Day!! I bought this game last month and headed straight to your channel to see if you had a video out on it. You didn't at the time. I haven't played it yet because I bought several other games at the same time and have been busy playing them, since they were quicker to learn. So excited to see you've done a video, which means now I can play without having to slug through the rules myself. Thanks!!
I've been eyeing The Gallerist for a while, and after watching a bit of your gameplay, I came here and watched this info. Seems very complex, but I love it to bits already. Decided it should be my Christmas present to myself, and bought the game. Thank you for the great and helpful videos, guys! I hope I get to see much more from you, especially gameplays!
Thanks for checking out the video and Merry Early Christmas to you :) We just wrapped our Robinson Crusoe play through and we're working on Mansions of Madness as well, if you're interested in some more play throughs.
Holy heaping hammerfists.. that's a lot of explanation and a billion components. Yikes! My friend was very excited (he's the group meeting head honcho) just bought this game yesterday and he's very excited to bring it to our game table. I'm honestly very curious about our first playthrough, and hopefully the game's pace is not more than 2 hours. I'll be studying your video a few more times so that I can get an understanding of the rules, and such. Thanks!!
+Steve Pruneau I played this game for the first time back in February. It was a 4P game and with the rules explanation + set up and play time, it came to 2hrs (cleaning up the game pushed it over 2hrs). The person that taught it was great at explaining the rules/game play so I'm sure that made a huge difference. I've since played the solo variant and a 2P game. The 2P game was close to 2hrs as well. We'd not played it for about a month so we were double checking on rules a few times. Love this game. :)
Received this last week with my copy of escape plan, played it (the Gallerist) once last year but as my memory’s not great this has really helped. Playing solo initially, which is quite simple to follow after watching this. Great to meet you too at AireCon this year (2019).
Phwoar what a monster, classic heavy euro that has a load of rules and then you’re left with no idea how the game plays - can’t wait for the play through! 😁
Great job (as always) Rodney. It was particularly interesting as I'd been following the periscope sessions on "Shooting The Gallerist" so it was nice to see how the final product ended up. Also handy as I'm hoping to play this again in a few days and whilst two of us have played before, by sending the new-to-the-game players the link to this video, it will save me having to explain the game again - a little bit selfish, but also means an extra 30 mins or so of gaming so yay!! :) . Many thanks mate and, as always, thanks for letting me watch!
+Rob Crosby Thanks for joining along on the "making of" journey :) Hope you guys have a great time playing and your friends who are new to the game find the video helpful!
Wow. As others have stated, there are a ton of moving parts here for what on the surface doesn't seem like the weight of the game matches the title of the game. That being said I was very impressed on how much you packed in to this video in a logical and straight forward manner. This in turn really had me thinking more about you and video creation. If you don't mind, can you indulge me in a few questions? 1) In a game like this, how do YOU learn this? Strictly by reading the rules? Designer help? Demo play at a con? 2) How do plan for a video like this? How much time or how many dry runs/scripts/planning goes into this to show all these intricacies? 3) How many times did you play this where you felt comfortable in your personal understanding of the game to prepare for this video? This game is on my wishlist, but after watching this (and it does seem awesome), I'm now a little gun shy to acquire only because I think my small gaming group would possibly be over whelmed by this, and I can't see myself teaching this to 2-3 others in a sitting or two (knowing their attention spans). I'd have to resign myself to the fact I'd probably be playing solo most of the time, and thus missing out the more social aspects of this. Again, looks like a great game, but very complex for the casual gamer group.
+jayson olson Hey Jayson, during the recording of this series, I actually recorded several live Periscopes where I went through the process of creating these videos. They would have answered your questions for sure :) I'll give you the very short hand answers here (there are longer answers, but it would take too long to type it all out). 1) Reading the rules. Checking for FAQ's. Asking questions. 2) For this video, read the rules and played the game 3 times. 7 hours to script and polish script. 13+ hours to record it. 3-4 hours to edit it. 1 hour of reshoots to clean it up. 3) After the first play I felt comfortable. The extra plays cemented things. The included play aid is very helpful.
Hi Rodney! Great job as usual. 3 quick questions after our first session: 1. When you want to place an influence token on your player board, but you can't move a visitor from your lobby to the plaza, can you still place it? 2. May be a silly question which I think I already know but when you discover an artist you only have a deal with them for the first work they make for you, right? Not if you want to buy from them again afterwards? 3. When doing the end game scoring, on the curator or art dealer cards, do you gain the bonus money for each set you have, or only once? For instance when it says 1 sculpture is 5 coins, does 2 sculptures win you 10 coins? Greets!
Hey Glenn, normally I do my best to answer all game related questions on my videos, but I currently have this game lent out, so I can't easily check the rules for you, I'm afraid. The rules forum on the game over at BoardGameGeek might be of some help: boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/125153/gallerist/forums/66
Thank you so much for this! I just bought the game and looked at the rule book with all that tiny print and was ready dive in head first, then I saw you had a video and was relieved. 🙏
A couple of weeks ago I found this video I didn’t know that you made a tutorial of this game And…nothing…wednesday I bought it😅 Thanks Rodney Your videos are always awesome 🔝🔝🔝🔝
Thanks for another how-to! I really like the art style and the components. The theme is well represented and it's quite original. However, this seems to be the type of game that I'd have to master *_very_* well before I introduced it to my group.
Again a great video, helped a lot! I would add that you could also activate a bonus tile from a new artist after flipping over. The rule book and the player aid are inconsistent in this point out of all reason. The artist bonus tile which lets you improve an artist's fame can be used for the just flipped artist. That's the only tile where the order matters I think, but it could be important.
Where can I donate to you? I just can't get over how good you are at explaining and the attitude you hold about play. Your positive attitude is rare to see, I hope that it translates off camera :) Also what are your top 3 tips for teaching?
Thanks for the kind words. I will have a fundraiser near the end of June/early July, and would love your support. It's how I'm able to keep making videos full time. As for tips on teaching, you may find these two videos helpful: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-hxbGQ423reo.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-raPLON3ICis.html
Watch It Played I quite liked it, enough to pick up a copy. Was also considering Lisboa but I figure starting my group on his lighter (relatively) title might be better.
Wow, you do take your time doing such an amazing work with the video and use regular normal people commenting here :), thanks for that Rodney. On a side note, Why do you always leave out _( or don't create a separate video )_ the additional rules for games, that are either for solo, coop, extra players, etc.?
+Jarb2104 Kind of funny, because in this case, I decided after the fact to do a solo rules video for this one :) Mainly I don't do it because I find those rules are usually added as an "alternative" way to play, and with so many games I want to cover on the channel, and with each video taking so long to create, this is an area where I don't mind leaving it to the viewer to learn, if it's something they want to explore. Most publishers make their rule books available online for free, so it's usually just a short read for the player, if they are curious.
***** Understandable, and again, let me congratulate you on the amazing work you do. Taking the time to create the video tutorials and answering questions. Keep it up! :)
I bought this game, spent 3 months trying to understand the rulebook (not my native tongue) then played it once. The game and subject matter interest me but the game felt very "designed". Like, showing off all the possibilities of game-mechanics possible in a game. We will play it again to see if we enjoy it but we weren't sure if we'd had "fun" with the game after a play. So, that was more than a year ago now....
Absolutely brilliant video. I'd been playing a couple of rules wrong and missing a few small ones. Would love you to tackle something really meaty like a COIN game :)
Great video, man you did great on this how to play, i love this boardgame, one of my favorite (if not my favorite!), it's heavy and strategically, it's not for everyone. Luckily i have many friends who like heavy games, so i never played with less than 4 players (full table). Maybe someday i try with less people to know how this affect. Surely the best how to play "the gallerist" that i ever seem. The bad thing is that i'm brazillian so it's hard to recommend to my friends who have trouble to understand english.
Wow, kudos to you for putting a video together for this game! I own it because I found it in a discount bin somewhere super cheap and unplayed (after opening it and learning it, that is not surprising). I had to have it because it's just beautiful. And I have tried to learn it by playing the solo version. I've played it 3 times from beginning to end, and I still don't get it 🤣 I have to walk myself through the instructions for almost every single move that I make. This game is redonkulous! Like I said, it is beautiful, and once I am about three-quarters of the way through it, I start to get the hang of it, although I never do well in the end game scoring because that's a whole nother 15 minutes of things to learn while you're playing if you want to set yourself up for a better score 😂😁 I will definitely use your video next time I set it up because I think it would save me some time, and there's always something in set up that I miss. But I know that I will never play this anyway other than solo, because I don't want to lose any friends. And I have found that I have to set it up a day or so before I plan to play -- and on a table that no one's going to use for a few days -- because setup takes about 45 minutes and by the time I'm done setting it up, I am already exhausted with it 😄 As people below have already observed, without even playing it, it's a heavy game. And honestly I don't think it needed to be this heavy. Could have used a lot more play testing and editing. But it's so prettyyy! 🤩 So I'll keep it in my solitaire collection. Maybe someday some crazy boardgamer will watch this video and learn it so they can play it with me ;) Love your videos!
Good gravy, I thought Arkham Horror had a complex setup. Since you're doing a play through you should show the insert so we have an idea of how the setup is out of the box.
Look up a "How to Play X" and see there's a Watch it Played Video... I know I'm going to be an expert on this game. I do an actual fist bump with myself when I see a game I've bought has your guides.
Hi! Just a question. When i buy a Work of art i increse the value of a signature that i have on my playboard. But if Another playere have the second signature of the same artist? Increase also his signature token? So the artist have the Art of work of this artis have alway the same price on both playboard?
Hey Emiliano, I usually try to answer all rules questions on the videos, but I lent my copy of the game to a friend and I don't have the rules handy to check for you.
QUESTION:If at the end of the game I acquire a renowned piece of art through the international auction, and I have yet to display art in my 3rd gallery stall. Do I get to place the bonus tile for end game scoring and get the immediate bonus? THANKS IN ADVANCE!!!
I don't believe you get the bonus tile, as that section of the board would have already been scored. More details here: boardgamegeek.com/thread/1632498/reputation-tile-third-work-art-gained-internationa
I have a question, is that possible to promote artist again if the artist already reached level 5, but still have spaces to promote in his tile, but not reached Master level yet?
Additionally you can gain fame from your tableau. Where you place a reputation tile one of the bonuses is an image of a white star above a white collector visitor. This bonus improves an artist's fame.
If a Player’s Gallery has two Works of the same art form by different artists, it does not matter which Work of Art is chosen when one of them is sold.
If I remember correctly, there are tokens to mark the arts as of one given artist. Granted, it doesn't change anything in the real result and increases a complication, but I guess someone could appreciate the added realism, if they wish...
Yeah it does! I have found that I have to set it up in my game room a day or so before I plan to actually play. Because it can take me 45 minutes just to get through setup, and feels longer. By then I feel like I've played the game and it's time to go home 🤣
