There’s just something I love about 90s - early 2000s atmospheric music for the movie trailers. They just don’t make trailers like they used to. It’s like an open book nowadays, but this movie is a gem.

There was just more thought put into movies (and their release) back then. At least from what I understand. If something flopped at the box office, it might still "make profit" as a rental. So they spent more time making a film and plotting the marketing. With this new streaming market, they just churn stuff out. You never really see good thrillers like they had back in this time period. Peak era, for sure. And we are just talking bigger budget thrillers, like this. Even the indie films were much better, took longer to make, etc. Never again.

Underrated masterpiece. I saw this movie as a kid renting it from blockbusters based only on the cover art and the most cryptic plot summary. One of the few times I saw a movie knowing next to nothing about it. It was so so good.

That's the best way to watch a movie. Speaking of Blockbuster in the 90's, a friend saw Boxing Helena (1993) and told me, go rent it and don't read the back. Just watch it. It was a trip not knowing what I was getting into!

Through the psycological analysis that they did with him, he got known completely, his next move was 99% predictable. Maybe someone knows us at that level and our fate is written and we can’t change it, is unavoidable. We may be spectators of our own life.

So much dark stuff coming out like this 97-early 2000s. Well made thrillers and crime movies. Even dark comedy stuff ("Ghost World", for example) was really gloomy and atmospheric. I don't know how we got into this smiley face/Facebook/be happy world. Or the action movie crap. This was a GREAT time to be renting from Blockbuster.

I remember watching it on vhs at my second house I wonder if my dad bought it Love Michael Douglas and it's dark twisted cat and mouse approach This was David Fincher's summary of the 1990s soulless ness; it made more money box office wise than Fight Club It's stunningly well-made, with a haunting, heart-racing score from Howard Shore and Fincher building a visual contrast using still shots and slow-mos in the first half, to a more frenetic and chaotic vibe once it hits full tilt Some of it stretches the sense of realism, since it feels a bit fantastical at points particularly the ending The film skirts the boundary between legitimately terrifying and ridiculous enough to be funny It sends a mixed message on how to perceive the rich Perhaps the gap between the haves and have-nots is just unbridgeable - the game is rigged from the start, as much as we don’t want it to be Still an intense nail biter
