I love The Muppets but them being at the Game Awards is pointless because they don’t bring anything to the show. They feel out of place to be completely honest. They’re only there because Geoff is a fan, pure and simple.

My question about this whole thing is: Why does the Game Awards, Geoff, or the industry need to impress Hollywood? The gaming industry already makes more money than Hollywood and has a bigger influence on younger and future generations. This whole thing feels like some weird coping, as if it's high school and nerds (the gaming industry) desperately want to be noticed and accepted by the popular kids (Hollywood).

It's insane that Hideo Kojima got almost 10 minutes on stage to barely talk about a game, then you have these random celebrities on stage that were able to talk on and on about random crap for multiple minutes.... Then you have Larian Studios, the winners of the show that were rushed off so quickly they didn't even get to announce that Baldurs Gate 3 was now out for Xbox.

Yeah, my wife and I were so excited to see Niel (Astarion voice actor) win the award, and were so happy for him and he was clesrly emotional, but we were so shocked that he seemed like he was forced off stage within what felt like 15 seconds. He didnt get a chance to even speak much. But the Hollywood actors who got to reveal the winners got to stand there and tell cringe jokes for 5 minutes before they revealed the winner

I just wanna point out that seemingly nobody has won a Steam Deck OLED from the giveaway the game awards was doing. The drawings were supposed to have happened yesterday, but they never did.

It's almost as if they didn't pay attention to why E3 is dead. The second it started becoming more Hollywood based everyone walked away, and the same thing is gonna happen here.

I've said this before and I will keep saying this: The Game Awards is just a glorified popularity contest that used as advertisements for these nominees and winners and undermines the hard work that every dev team that makes games every year weather these games get nominated or not

to me its just a big E3-esque presentation of game announcements that happens to be a good time/place to give out awards as a side thing.

I definitely think that part of the problem is Geoff Keighley himself, he takes himself and this show WAYYYY too seriously, he was a great journalist for sure before the internet, and after the awards show is over, he goes into an 11 month hibernation of being irrelevant to the current landscape until the month before the game awards happens every year, then he goes into obscurity again, how are we supposed to "celebrate" the year in gaming if they don't have time to celebrate, yet he can make a mess in his pants over Hideo Kojima for 10 minutes

Its disrespectful to the hardworking teams that spend years developing the games we play only to get 30 seconds to give a speech. Give them at least 4 or 5 minutes. We the gaming community need to remind Geoff Keighley of this constantly until next years awards. I say they comply or be denied viewership.

Truth! I love how they even are like 'oh go over here if you wanna see who won this award that we don't deem worthy to be on stage.' Look I've been in game dev for 15 years, and I DO genuinely look forward to all the trailers and such at TGA, but this year was pretty bad for the actual awards. It's a f'ing stream for God's sake... you can take as long as you damn well please, and since most folks watch the recording later, if they don't' wanna listen to the speeches then they can skip them.

If we want to see awards, we'd watch the Oscars. If we want games, turn into Winter E3. We want games, not Hollywood. Edit: Yes, I am aware that E3 is dead. But my point is that we could have an event centered around games during the winter that doesn't have to be centered around Hollywood. We're above Hollywood.

I don't mind the celebrities being there when they actually like gaming and their presence feels organic. Zachary Levi dunking on microtransactions six years ago was an iconic moment.

If none of the gaming studio staff turned up for the gaming awards, it would be a huge blow to them, a huge embarrassment and send a message they'll continue doing that until they give more respect and time to the awards show which is supposed to be for the games!!

If they want celebrities to do the presentations, get the big voice/performance capture actors that do the characters in the games. Get the development leads for past acclaimed games. Those are the celebrities gamers care about. Don't get Hollywood superstars from a different medium.

I know this is probably true every year, but it does feel kinda embarrassing how much time the show spends trying to give publishers money and how little time it spends congratulating developers.

The Baldur’s gate 3 director not only showed up in armor, but he won game of the year and accepted the award in the armor too. What a goddamn legend and Christopher Judge roasting COD was the highlight of the show for me.

Sometimes CGI trailers are used as a recruiting tool too. Is it ideal? Probably not. But it does help studios drum up interest for their projects. And the industry likes to take advantage of passion to pay less. And that's where a cgi trailer can sometimes help.

I think there should definitely be a video game awards show. If movies and music get one, why not gaming? However, the spotlight needs to be put on the DEVELOPERS! I like gameplay trailers, too

The only announcements that got me hyped were the Sega games and Dragonball Sparking Zero as it was real game footage. But Geoff tried way too hard I got flashbacks when the show used too be on Spike Tv and one award was presented by the cast of Blue Mountain State

The only trailer that showed a sample of gameplay was Visions of Mana. We saw: running in the overworld, a bit of early game combat, combat with magic, boss combat with ally NPCs, using magic to traverse gaps and cliffs, using magic to breath underwater, and that's it. There was a bunch of cutscene stuff there in the trailer as well, but at least we saw a semblance of gameplay.

I'm just disappointed in The VGA and Geoff Keighley for not even giving Hogwarts Legacy the spotlight it deserves, it was completely absent from the show, that's a huge insult to the game cause its the best Harry Potter game we've ever got in a very long time. I never really liked these types of events because of how you described them, giant ads. It does not translate to if I will like a game, have liked a game, or if the community supports and makes the game successful. Heck, fan games for vTubers do better and have higher ratings than MANY AAA studio games. But would they ever appear? No.

Ive enjoyed review tech usa for the past 5+ years and its funny that the channel hasnt changed its name to something like drama alert usa and made a separate channel for actual tech videos if separate channels for the music and streams has been made. Yes, the Awards show wants to appeal to Hollywood too much, but even the Oscars don't inundate us with movie trailers that are upcoming. Can you imagine if the Oscards did that? The Game Awards is more like The Game Trailers. The Developers definitely deserve more time.

It was not very exciting and really isn’t… great imo (maybe it’s the pacing?? Or the excessive talking?? Or the games being shown??) While I may not agree with everything, I do agree the Game Awards feels like a giant advertisement, is seeking validation, and yeah, I’m glad people are speaking their minds about all of this. All award shows are b.s. Look at the rock and roll hall of fame inducting rappers and not iconic rock bands. They won't touch giant metal bands because they're too edgy. It seems like it makes you good if you don't get inducted. The game awards is just another reason I ignore award shows.

I just find it kind of absurd that people are like "Hey Geoff, this show that you created and turned into a massive success with over 100 million viewers watching... yeah you need to change it". Obviously, you should tweak some things each year. I'm sure next year they'll give winners more time to speak before playing them off for example. But people expecting huge changes to how the show is are just being delusional, as the saying goes, if it ain't broke don't try to fix it.

The problem going into watching ANY award show is thinking it's anything other than a promotional tool for things that came out that are still profitable and things that are coming. That's all award shows. None of them matter. Not the Oscars, not the Grammys, not The Game Awards. It's all self serving, doesn't represent the audience and is chosen by a select few to make conversation on who should have one or lost an a piece of metal/plastic/wood. You're right when the developers should have gotten more love and respect, but that's not going to happen for an awards show. Why do you think almost if not all production awards are off screen or a blip on the screen and not treated as equals? Because the companies running it want the average or less than average fan to actually tune in. They don't need to market towards the diehards, they are already there. And again for the developers, teams, everyone who goes into making a game, they deserve better than a paperweight and 30 seconds in front of their peers to give thanks. There's no question on that. Bur again, a self serving awards show that means nothing is not the place for it. I go into it for news of upcoming games. That's it. That's all this has ever been. Expecting more from something that hasn't changed in a decade is just setting yourself up for disappointment.

I don't mind a Game Awards show in concept. Game Developers deserve recognition for the absurdly hard work they do year in and year out. Hollywood Stars can participate but you know only if they're gamers. Like Henry Cavill could host or present, I'm not questioning his bona fides. I would ask for a Superman 64 crack though. But let the winners speak on it. Keighly putting up a list of games and then the winner gets highlighted...I mean the games (in a lot of those categories) don't even get a clip so that people who didn't play it know what it looked like. It's not satisfying. And for crying out loud get a handle on the translator issue. It's one thing for Japanese devs, the translator takes time. With Kojima that was a preplanned segment, you should know what he's going to say and have the translation and subtitles ready to go.

On the surface, the awards was pretty fun with a couple issues but I didn't even notice this. The devs weren't given the time and in my opinion, there were too many trailers and most of them were multiplayer focused. Not the fact that they were all multiplayer focused but they all looked too similar and blended together that I can't even remember what they were. Other than Lego Fortnite.

2017 was the last time I watched the Game Awards. There was no point after that. The only thing I like from the game awards is the Orchestra music they play before game of the year. But thankfully I can watch that on RU-vid without watching the boring show.

Yeah, I agree the devs deserved more time to accept their awards. Playing music after 30 seconds was ridiculous. But other than that, I had no issues with The trailers. A good amount of them had actual gameplay. The ones that had cgi trailers, were just teasers and I have no issue with a game's 1st teaser being cgi as long as it's followed with info roughly explaining what type of game the final product is going to be so I have an idea. So let's be real the game awards have ALWAYS been more about the announcements of upcoming games. Just like people only watch the MTV VMAs for the music performances, (especially since it the only actual music ever shown on MTV anymore). But I do agree, the devs do deserve to be properly celebrated and I hope they decide to restructure and find a better balance in the future.

What really got me was there were some major categories like Best Fighting Game, Best RPG, and best Action that were just Geoff speed running multiple awards with a graphic on the screen.

I absolutely hated that Forza Motorsport won racing game of the year over The Crew Motorfest. It was missing content, a lackluster atmosphere, a progression system that's the worst in the franchise, a penalty system that's broken, Car Pointe being abbreviated, car models from 2005, and a bug that resets your progress for any playlist played.

This may be controversial to say but I think the game awards should have less trailers for upcoming games ( mind you I mean still having some just reducing the number of them) and instead use that time to let the winners talk. Yeah it'll cut down on viewership numbers because it'll be less exciting but it also would be more of a celebration of the year for gaming

The celebrities should only be up there if they're involved in a game that won something, or given a *short time* to introduce a reveal trailer for a new game they are in. Matthew McConaughey took up less than two minutes to intro Exodus, which I think would be reasonable if winners were given a similar time for speeches. And out of all the trailers shown during that 3.5hr event, the only games that I can say for certain that I am very interested in are No Rest for the Wicked, Tales of Kenzera, and Exodus. All games that did include actual gameplay in their trailers.

Yup. What are Hollywood stars doing in a game show? What they gotta do with gaming community??? Inviting youtubers & streamers that actually played the damn games would have made more sense than this BS. And despite wasting so much time on ads & promotions & rushing the award winners, these mf still didn't show anything worthwhile apart from 3-4 announcements like GOWR DLC, Black Myth Wukong, Rise of Ronin, Blade, Hellblade etc. Where tf was Elden Ring??? Where was DeathStranding 2? Where was Hollowknight Silksong??? Where was Silent Hill 2??? Where was the actual good stuff??? Most of that award show they just showed bunch of BS game trailers & called it a day.

Tbh I only care about the reveals and the occasional good game I actually like getting wins, like BG3 this year. The whole Hollywood elbow rubbing always bothered me. Glad to see people are speaking up about it. With how few nominees there are every year it's always disapointing to see how little time is spent on a years worth of gaming.
