My Gameboy Pocket pretty much saved my life during highschool back in the day. When my faith in school was absolutely at -10000%, the Gameboy Pocket kept me going. It was easy to see, lasted forever on batteries and had tons of games to share with another friend of mine who happened to be hearing disabled and EASILY fit in my Jnco jeans pockets. Seeing this update brought a smile to my face.
I started with Gameboy pocket but I was only 6 years old. Changed my life though. God how bored I would've been getting stuck places with old family members without that. Play through batteries in a single session and trading other kids for batteries.
@@haunterdragon4580 I had the original Game Boy, and I don't know if this was available for Pocket, but for the original there were two battery packs available. One by Nuby and one by Nintendo. The Nuby one cost $20-25 and the Nintendo one cost $27-32 depending on sales. Well worth the investment. The Nuby one only lasted about half as long as a fresh set of alkaline batteries on a charge, but you got hundreds of charges. The Nintendo one could be recharged while the Game Boy was on, so you could pause a game, go to bed, go to school, then come home and finish the game, allowing you to say experience the New Game+ hard mode for Super Mario Land while still having time for that homework your parents are nagging you about.
@@slickrcbd9543 I was only like 5 or 6 and my dad who didn't live with us got me the Gameboy. My mom didn't know 💩 about stuff like that so I just had the rough standard way. I remember having to give back a n64 he gave me too because my mom was too afraid to touch the TV and they didn't think it made sense to let me keep something I couldn't use. Later on I begged my mom and aunt at a mall for a ps one only $20 because it was so cheap and I after being stubborn they let me get it and I realized after figuring out how to do it myself that I could have done that for the N64. Losing the 64 motivated me to get over my fear of listening to my mom and making it work with the TV so I guess I needed to fail first.
This was a wonderful surprise. I was very happen to see Link's Awakening DX included. The original Awakening was my first ever Zelda game, so it'll be great to play through it all over again. I can't wait to see what else they decide to bring for the GB and GBA in the future.
If I remember about the 1st one is that technically it’s not made by Nintendo but was licensed by another company. I wanted this one too as I had this and Tetris when it launched
My take on the “classic feel” is that it shows the individual pixels you would see on the LCD screen- with their slight gap between them. I don’t notice any ghosting but the pixels showing like that is exactly how it looked. Some game boy screens looked more or less pea green depending on how well they were taken care of. I think a light greenish yellow was more the original look.
I remember being 10 years old and I was on a flight from London to Bangladesh. There was a guy in the row in front of me, he was maybe between 20-30 years old idk my memory is foggy, and he was playing Mario Kart on his purple Gameboy Advance. To me it looked the coolest thing I've ever. He even let me play a few circuits for half an hour, and that was during the time when you needed AA batteries to power the system. I fell in love with Nintendo games and the system, so it's really important to me when they put the GBA on NSO. That was the pivotal catalyst moment in my life that brought Nintendo into my life. I did own (and still do) an original Playstation, but this experience opened my eyes to a whole other world of gaming.
The ghosting effect is actually needed for certain games like Batman: Return of the Joker. The water in the first level relies on the ghosting to do its water effects properly. Also there's a shmup (I forgot the name of it) that you would NOT want to play without the ghosting. So I'm glad Nintendo gave it as an option. Good on them for finally adding these systems to the Switch. EDIT: The shmup is called Chikyuu Kaihou Gun ZAS. Japan exclusive.
Link's Awakening also uses ghosting to do transparency effects. You can see that very well in the credits. The text is flickering very quickly on an emulator, but on the original Gameboy, it would show as transparent.
All of these additions are very exciting, but I really wish they had an option for you to purchase games individually like on previous virtual consoles. I would totally buy a few of these games if they offered that option.
There’s significantly more 1st party software on the GameBoy and GBA than the other platforms they’ve released to the service. That alone makes me feel like we won’t have to wait as long between releases.
My deaf negbor always peeps in bathroom window while I'm on the toilet! He then starts screeching and scratzing at the exterior wall of my bathroom. It makes it impossible to go and then I end up on toilet for 2 hours
You're absolutely right, reward Nintendo for doing it right. NOW I will buy the expansion pass. Been putting it off for a while but this totally makes it worth it.
All you guys do is "reward" Nintendo. What do you do to "not reward" Nintendo? Do you boycott? Hold off on a game purchase? Nope. You're ALWAYS rewarding Nintendo!
Still putting it off over here. I want to choose these online service games (ME). Are there some good options? SURE! But how many “meh” games are sprinkled in? More than the good ones. Still have my OG Super GameBoy, so I’m fine with that. I mean, Super Mario Land would’ve been a no-brainer 😳
Rewarding Nintendo for something that is easy to implement from jump. These are fanboy games in green and grey our phones have been emulating this since 2007. This is nothing special I want more from them.
I didn't care about the online service until now I will for sure be upgrading soon to get all the gameboy systems. now it looks like the value is there with so many games to play. hopefully Nintendo will be more frequent with adding new games.
It’s great they finally did this but I wish we could just download the games onto our system like the virtual console. Can’t help but feel like we’re essentially leasing the games with our subscription.
It exactly is that way. Imagine wanting to play the game again after years later and finding out they removed it from the service. You are paying $50 to rent games. You don't own anything anymore. They can remove the games whenever they want.
Love that Nintendo added all 5 pages of e-reader levels to SMB Advance 4 (SMB3)... Very nice touch since most people never got to play those official custom Nintendo levels in the past...
When I was a kid in the very early 90s my mom and I used to go to Sears and they had this big GameBoy display and you could play a GameBoy game on a bigger screen . For my entire life. I wanted a way to be able to do that, and now I can.
Let's all enjoy the fact that we can take these classic gameboy games on the go and actually have the games backlit, something that when as kids we did not have the luxury of
This reveal had me screaming during the Direct lol. As soon as I got home from work, first thing I did was boot up my switch and download these emulators. Spent an absurd amount of time playing Game Boy games last night and this weekend I’m gonna spend more time doing so. Good job Nintendo. Thank you for doing some good.
@RGT_85 I remember when you said that "You can't play your GBA Games on your Nintendo Switch" back in August 2022 while reviewing the Wii U Eshop & here we are now. The Switch needs DS Games now. That's 1 takeaway compared to the Wii U now.
It’s been a VERY long while since I last picked up my Switch to play any games. Lately I’ve just been playing on my PlayStation. But after that Direct yesterday, seeing Gameboy, Gameboy Color and Gameboy Advance games coming that very same day, I at last started up my system to relive my most nostalgic childhood memories by playing the GBA games again.
really? not playing any xbox Game pass games, or Hi Fi, or Age of empires, or Golden Eye 4k GREAT controls :D well of Course you haven't played those or FORZA best in class racer, and Redfall / Starfield/motorsport RTX coming... well maybe you were lagging on the biggest and most recent 5 or so third party games past year on your system. its ok they don't feel lag.. you just don't feel super smoothness.. I mean you not lying to us... you only have Sony as the other system..no way you could be lying... Well enjoy all that ..or not having that^. I mean really enjoy the sony, I feel sorry you don't have enough after buying ps5 nowadays you could get a XSX and a Switch OLED for price of ps5 here... I really do mean it, enjoy your system tho. I just find it funny what is there to play recently on ps5 last 3 months (forbroken)? I mean really.. I don't mean to be negative to you only.. but really? xbox has released so much past 3 months, nintendo starting to as well. Enjoy tho.
In the span of 24 hours, Nintendo has added over 5 games to by backlog that I have never played or finished and I’m both excited and exhausted just thinking about trying to finish them all. 😂
Glad to see you’re doing better. Keep the content coming but make sure you take care of yourself. I know we said 500k or did but it was a figure of speech.
I don't think Nintendo's retro games catalog really sells systems (I could be wrong). I am more guessing they are planning on a lot of hype and a sales bump from Tears of the Kingdom. I also wonder if they maybe have something else big for the last half of the year that they have yet to announce (maybe a new Mario game going into Christmas?).
I am so incredibly happy about Game Boy games being added! My dream came true! Gives us a look at what a game boy mini (with HDMI) could’ve been like! I’m abroad on holiday without my Switch but when I get back the first thing I’ll do it play through Super Mario Land 2 and Link’s Awakening, play some Tetris and finally play Golden Sun on a TV!
I got an Ice Blue Gameboy Pocket and the first games I got was Super Mario Land, Super Mario Land 2, Kirby's Dreamland, Ms. PacMan and GnW Gallery. I think this was in 1996 for my birthday. Nice to see some of these games make it for release.
I still have a massive problem with this, and it's because you can't download & play these games locally or offline. The fact all these NSO games are streaming-only is a real sticking point with me. It felt like a big slap in the face when Nintendo said you can now play these GB/GBA games "anywhere," just like you originally could! No... no, you can't. You can play them only connected to wifi at home or some hotspot location, but you can't play these on the go just anywhere like you could GB/GBA. It's even more annoying considering MS & Sony allow full downloads for much bigger, more expensive, and more recent games, yet Nintendo forces you to stream low-effort emulations. Combined with the fact they have the nerve to tout "online multiplayer" for many of these games, even though they're locked to just direct matches with friends using freaking FRIEND CODES... *IN 2023!!!!* I don't even consider that real online gaming. And when NSO lacks basic features like social functionality, a simple messaging system or voice chat, it makes connecting with people even more annoying.
@B4RS Yes! I gave up on that stuff at this point. And for non-retro games, it's a toss up if connections work anyway! In Pokemon Scarlet/Violet, you're lucky to connect to 1 out every 10 raids you click on. Even trade connections drop & force you to resubmit your offer half the time. This is a service we PAY for now, and they can't even be bothered to reinvest that money into dedicated servers or improving basic functionality.
? Yes you CAN download and play this games offline dude. Literally did this today. This is not streaming. Inform yourself before talking. You just have to do a check-in ONCE in like a week. You did this massive comments withouth even knowing what you are talking about...
@Ric LN The entire comment wasn't just about offline play. Thank you for correcting me, but I don't check in with all my games once a week, therefore it's virtually the same. Yes, the games are streamed 99% of the time through the NES/SNES/N64 apps. I even just checked & see no option to locally download anywhere, but I'm guessing it's hidden? Either way, thank you for the information, but Ive never been able to find an option to do so. Requiring a once a week check in certainly fits Nintendo though.
@@corey2232 You don't have to check in every game. Just the app. Again, no, there's NO streaming involved at all. They are all downloaded to the system! There's no option to play locally because they are always local. The only time they are streamed is when they are from a friend console for online play. To be fair, it can be misunderstood for streaming because all the games just start immediatly, but that's because they are all downloaded in the Moment when you download the app. Thats why when a new game get released, you have to update and the file size increase.
Just wish we could purchase the games and not have to be part of a service. I know the price of the service is low but still... i would much rather have the option to purchase them digitally.
Hey RGT - I just wanted to say thanks for this video. I haven’t had a chance to play around with the knew handheld consoles on NSO yet and I did not know about all of those cool filter options! If they said it in the direct I was probably too busy screaming my head off in excitement for these games coming online! I said a while back when the Cowabunga Collection came out that I hoped other companies were paying attention because they brought on not just those old games, but they added extra filters, online gameplay and I said I hope that other companies are paying attention because this is how it needs to be done. The LAST company I thought would take cues from that collection was going to be Nintendo but look at this! Filters, palette swaps, local and online play? Dude!!!! Once we get a taste for this, all we’re going to want is more online play! I want this for the NES & SNES games now lol. So cool though man good video.
Yeah. I already emulate my Gameboy games anyway using the GB Operator. I'd prefer an actual officially licensed New Gameboy Classic with preloaded games. That would be something to be excited about.
watching the direct with everyone was a blast. thanks nintendo!!!!! when they brought up the remaster and were like "later on today," I had to read it again a couple of times because I wasn't expecting that at all. my brain was like, no no no, read it again. it's never t o d a y. lmao
The high price point back then for the expansion pack as well as the small amount of games turned me away from the it initially. But with the GBA as well as the added games over time, now I reward them with a purchase. Good stuff.
You forgot to mention how like the Wii U virtual console version of SMBA4: SMB3 they made all of the E-Reader levels available including the ones we never got in the U.S. Definitely a cool reason to play that version of the game.
When things like this happen, it makes taking care of your health soo worth it. Even motivations that seem silly to ignorant folks count, so long as yourself and other people come by no harm. My birthday is on the 19th of this month, and this brings me one step closer to getting the expansion pass of NSO. The surprise releases in the Direct are like frosting on the cake for me. Seriously, I missed me some Wario Ware goodness, got my nieces hooked on how absolutely silly the series is around the time of the GameCube title. Helped me laugh when I thought depression and anxiety were robbing me of that simple joy. Even with the world seemingly scary and dark as heck sometimes, videogames give me something to look towards the future with excitement for. I hope you find that wonder worth sharing with friends and family too!
Feel for you with depression and anxiety, been plagued with it most my life and gaming has long been a good cure for when I am feeling down, just a shame World of Warcraft has lost its zing for me as I was a day zero player and its become so repetitive and I began to feel it was becoming a zombie game with no real depth. I still maintain my second LotRO account as I was an alpha tester for that and my youngest plays my lifetime founders account and its not too bad as mmo's go.
@@dodgydruid Video games have always been like that for me as well. Recently I’ve had a major back surgery that’s basically made my back feel real weird and different to how it used to feel and that’s where video games have proved especially useful. Now, my back is slowly getting better, but it’s going to take a long time for it to be what it was before the surgery. Also I’ve had to relearn so many things like how to walk and how to sit without feeling like your gonna fall….it’s been hard living with a straight back. But at least there’s video games to help me cope with that.
if they wouldve included metroid fusion i wouldve had this going already. i’ll probably pay for the service this weekend. minish cap has been on my list for so long ive contemplated about getting a gba many times just for that game and fusion. good job on this, Nintendo!
I hate to be the one to say it but I beat that about two months ago on a android with touch controls and also controller really don’t see the point of any of these when you can emulate them with even better graphics if you wanted but of course something like gb and gba I like the standard pixels 1x res
Very cool addition. I recently got my Analogue Pocket and have been slowly building my GB, GBC and GBA library and whoa, some of these games are super pricey. Love the feel of the Pocket but can learn to enjoy this too for much cheaper 😊
Yeah man I've been collecting. They just shot up the last few years. I feel like I'm investing in gold or something. I saw Pole Position for Gameboy for 200 dollars at a shop near me, Now I want it XD. I got the OG Gameboy and the GBA micro, I'm working on picking up a color soon.
I had a Game Boy Pocket, but I never had a Game Boy Color. I downloaded the first app at launch last night. The strangest one in the list so far has to be Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare. What that should mean (hopefully) is that Nintendo is willing to release more licensed games. I would love to eventually see the GBC port of Metal Gear Solid on there.
That's not a port, it's a totally different game with a totally different continuity. Would a port be a top-down stealth shooter while the original was in first-person? No. Besides the games in question have totally different names in the original Japanese release. The PS1 game being the beginning of the Metal Gear Solid series, while the GBC game is part of the old Metal Gear games.
@@arcyarcanine still with all the games they added with launch, ANDD the crazy good ones they have coming... maybe metal gear solid GBC could be one on the way this year, never know :D
@@leemartin1417 YoO that is a hot take^. Links wasn't too easy. I'm about to try Links Awakening again boot up the nOnline GBA/GB oh sorry GBGBAGBcolor.. nahh its 2 systems okay.. haha!! sorry RGT. Oracles huh? interesting!
Looking to finally grab Nintendo expansion pass after the release of the handhelds. Plenty value and I want to at least try the Mario course packs to see if I will purchase them.
The thing I remember most about Gameboy was riding in the car on the Southern State Parkway and having to both play the game but keep an eye out for the low overpasses that would spell your doom since the Gameboy needed light to see the screen. How did they make a screen that could not be seen in the dark? Hope they get Alleyway at some point. Loved it as a kid.
haha you and I had the same childhood, SSP included! However, it was mostly pokemon for me that I had to absolutely SQUINT to see. I tell ya, the GBA SP was a godsend when it came out!
I recently tried getting back into Minish Cap on my Gameboy Advance SP, but my save file was corrupted, and more than that I couldn't start a new save, the whole cartridge was just messed up (and it was a genuine Nintendo game pak). I'm so glad they included Minish Cap from the beginning with the GBA. I'm so happy just for that! And I also started playing through Metroid 2 with the GB Color option. So fun.
Those three for the OG Gameboy were the only GB games I had forever lol. And Metroid II has been my favorite Metroid. Nostalgia city an awesome surprise with three new systems
I think I still have my Alone in the dark cartridge stashed somewhere! I loved that game when I was younger. I wonder if it will be possible to run the Oracle Zelda games on the GameBoy Advance, there's a specific ring to collect called the advance ring that requires a gameboy advance to get.
If you look at Links Awakening you can see on the cover art they include the extra dungeons. So of course they will have the extra on Ages etc when it comes out.
I grew up on the Gameboy from my parents. The value is worth it minus the DLCs needs some work but the system is 100% better than last year. I thinking of grabbing it very soon because they did a good job and I am hoping get some of the classic Gameboy games on the system very soon
Not in the us. They'd have to censor certain things and still translate. It isn't like EB Beginnings where the game was already translated but not released.
When I was 6 (1993) all I wanted for Christmas was a Gameboy. My grandma bought my 3 year old cousin a Gameboy+Tetris bundle and got me Snakes and Ladders. That's the off-brand of an already generic game. He was still in diapers. It did have to stay at her house though, my dad bought me Links Awakening so I got to play it when I went there. A few years later she got me a Gameboy Pocket, which is still my favorite model. The Pocket broke (just sitting in my fucking pocket) in a few months and I got the Color, which I still have. Gameboy is special to me because it was the first console that was mine.
Well Fusion was already shown as an upcoming title, so hopefully they bring zero mission as well. Never played that one and I’ve heard it’s one of the best
the online for gba i tested it with someone who gave me a red and orange bar and it worked really well. I can't wait to see a mario kart GBA online tournament community pop up. also kirby and the amazing mirror is going to be amazing online.
I could not be happier with the new console additions! I created a different system level control scheme in which button A is mapped to Y, button B is mapped to A, and button Y is mapped to B. This makes NES, GB, GBA, and N64 games play so much more comfortable to play.
I'm definitely gonna be playing a good amount these like Minish Cap and Season of Ages, two zelda games I never got a chance to play and hopefully we'll see the mainline pokemon gameboy games at some point
I got the expansion pack for the first time, because I believe that we will be getting some pokemon games on these game boy and game boy advance collections. The timing seems too convenient. They release these with a few games, right before pokemon day, where at least red, blue and yellow will probably be released for the game boy color. And possible fire red and leaf green on the gba. I don’t see them releasing all of the games (rby, gsc, rse, and frlg) at the same time, but if they do that’d be insane. Maybe we also see stadium 1 and 2 for the n64 announced on pokemon day.
Renting retro games via online service in 2023 is bit something to praise. Ill just wait till i can buy a steam deck and make it a retro legacy console.
I think it's absurd and just shows how low the standard is for Nintendo's retro catalog that we have to buy an expansion pack for 30 year old online only rom play that we don't even own
Honestly I don't understand why so much excitement for games that you can play practically in any console, smartphone and portable in existence with even better performance
I was just talking about Metroid 2 and Gargoyle's Quest being Top 5 Gameboy games, and now I'm playing Metroid 2 after over 30 years since last I played it.
Awesome video RGT 85. All the GB/GBC & GBA Content is looking fantastic. I think it's now time too get the Expansion Online Service for the Switch, with GoldenEye and all Gameboy stuff, it's gotta be done.
I would've been perfectly happy with just Gameboy, but getting Gameboy advance was just the icing on the cake. Got way more than I was expecting with the direct.
