In reality they are talking about the gaming developers being happy from the whales keeping their income up long after the game copies have sold. Its all psychology u want Big Deek Energy, I can give u that for a price. The whales will oblige because it generates the feeling of rarity and power not attainable from no lifers. Most whales are people that have a high income that work a ton and cant play all day. So in return its like using your real world skills to catch up to no lifers. Who is really to blame now? people that have all the time in the world to 100 percent a game or the people working the 9-5 who can play one hour a night? OR the greedy developer trying to pocket the deficit? Its much deeper than some generic old story of drug addict looking for his next hit.

Ten years ago I used to play a Chinese MMO called Age of Wushu a LOT. Was a big player on my server and a very known name. The game started out not p2w then became more and more so as the game went on. Over the 4 years I played, I spent $2k ish trying to keep up with the whales just to stay competitive. My whole perspective changed when I met the top player, a guy from Singapore, he was a banker, and we chatted for a bit. He would casually say "Hold on im gonna drop $3k so I can get a few things" on the regular. It really put into perspective for me that some people out there just have that kind of money. That is their play money, they won't miss it in the slightest. They wont even notice it's gone. After that game, if a game has pay to win elements (that extend beyond basic pay for conveniences) I completely disregard it and assume it isn't worth my time as a gamer. It is a dangerous mindset when you are a competitive gamer and you think you can compete with these people if you just swipe a few more times. A waste of money. I am acutely aware of anything like this and avoid it like the plague. I don't buy lottery tickets, I don't play MMOs, I don't waste my money on anything I can't see. I'm an old FGO player whose mostly F2P except for guaranteed gachas and I realized early on that since they didn't have a pity system, it wasn't worth spending unless you were going to whale. So I just played the game knowing I can't have everyone I like. Overall, I'd say I had a lot of fun with the game. As a Fate fan, the story was pretty engaging to me even if I played on JP and can't read anything. The character designs are great as well. The only reason I stopped was because I got busy IRL and my muscle memory couldn't keep up with all the changes. So, my advice, if you have self-control issues, steer clear of gacha games, however, if you can manage the FOMO, they can still be a fun experience.
@thewhyzer

FGO does have a pity system now. All you have to do is 300 pulls / 30 multis on the same banner to guarantee 1 copy (and then the "pity" stops). Yes, 300 pulls, even the pity is targetted for whales.

The sad part is that this would still be so much more ethical than what actually is in most of AAA games these days already. First, let's not make it 20$, but make it 2000 "Bright Runes". 2000 Bright Runes actually cost 25$. But wait, you can't buy 2000 Bright Runes, they only come in packs of less, which buys you pretty much nothing, or far more, at a supposed "discount" for the bigger packs. Oh and ofc there are barely any skins to earn ingame, and most of the ones that are there, are just slight alterations and recolours - if you actually want to look cool and have visual progression throughout the game, you have to buy that too, with much higher quality and fidelity skins constantly advertised in the Store, with a distracting blinking/glowing icon with every new addition until you click into the store to see them - so might as well get the bigger packs, right? And ofc stuff like Sacrificial Twigs to not lose Runes on death are on the store instead of just available ingame, for the benefit of the customer ofc - not everybody can and wants to regrind Runes lost on potential deaths after all. And ofc all the Bell Bearings and the Twin Maiden Husk Vendor? That's all in the cash shop, and more. /E: My bad, I forgot to add the game costs 70 bucks now, which is 100$ if you want to play the game on it's actual release date through a "Deluxe" Edition, otherwise you have to wait and go on an internet blackout or get spoiled. Oh and there is the 10+$ Battlepass. And the 30+$ Expansions. And the 15+$ Season Pass for all the DLC. Enjoy the game! Devs have to eat after all you monster, and this game would have been impossible to make without these MTX. Just wanted to add to asmond's point, about secondary currencies abuse. Say you want a season pass and it's 12$ worth of tokens but the closest pack of tokens you can buy to get the season pass is 15$. Now they have 3 extra dollars of your money just because of a secondary currency system that shouldn't exist. And you have a season pass and 3$ worth of tokens that typically cannot buy anything in the shop by itself. Leading to more spending down the road.

Most people aren't going out drinking to a bar/club. Most people aren't eating out regularly. Most people don't have hobbies they dump money into. Most people aren't doing drugs. And people wonder how the idea of the "toxic male gamer" came about and became weaponized by "Progressives"... I hate the "woke" mentality that all gamers are "toxic males" as much as everyone, because it _is_ mostly false. However, the shooter and "live service" genres are the exceptions that are filled with those kinds of scumbags. Stereotypes always have a _speck_ of truth to them - is it why they are stereotypes in the first place. Most of the gamers who grew up playing games in the golden age of the '90s and 2000s don't understand this problem with modern playerbases, because they grew up in environments where "toxic" people were just trolls and joksters who _everyone_ knew were not to be taken seriously. They are too old now to see how bad the communities of shooters and "live service" games actually are today, and/or are too blinded by their nostalgia of the past to acknowledge it. A lot of people these days are the kinds of parents that _shouldn't_ be parents, and for some reason these jackasses congregate the most within the shooter and "live-service" spaces.

I would often buy these chips just so I could show off rare cards in school for attention and validation even though I didn't like the actual chips themselves. I do agree that it would be awesome if you could just buy the character etc you want for a base price in addition to the GACHA. That way you can "gamble" and maybe get it for less or you can choose to simply get what you want/need directly. IMO the developer doesn't really lose either way.

I think a big thing people overlook is the whales who spend and arent necessarily online or try and defend themselves. I personally know a person whos spent well over 100k on genshin impact. And they honestly will tell you they think genshin should be game of the year. A lot of these games are great at having people form an emotional connection with them and through that connection they abuse it in order to get people to feel justified in spending money. Now not that there is anything immediatley wrong with that sort of idea but the issue with that is that nearly all the games that try and use people emotional connection with them to justify their continued spending do so in a manipulative manner and also dont funnel that money into development. There is no universe in which genshin has spent more than 1/3 the money they have made on developing their world and its interactibility. Back to the prior point, these people dont really look at it as how much they have spent overall. For alot of them they are blind to their prior purchases, so 2k here on this banner feels alright to them (even for those who its a significant purchase for). And when it all adds up very rarely will they regret it. Many of these people like the one i know personally also arent very in touch with the gaming community (in the case of the one person I know they basically only watch cute animal videos, dramas, and genshin hype content on youtube) so they dont consider the fact that their purchases are having a negative impact on the overall gaming community. And often they dont really think critically either so they arent really able to see the dangers of gambling based monetization models. Anyway this probably reads awfull and wont be seen by anyone but those are my sleep deprived 2 cents

Totalbiscuit was a symbol for Pro-consumer vibes. ...and they waited us out. It took them over a decade, but they beat us. They waited us out. Why push against the wall of the 90s video game crowd when you can just wait for the gacha games of the 2000s to become the norm? When DLCS, paying for cosmetics, and so many more things are now the norm? Hell, they have a presentation about HUNTING FOR WHALES. We aren't even seen as people anymore, we are an animal! I want you to imagine a war that goes on for decades. Not that hard to visualize honestly. We the "bad video game practices" on one side. On the other side is the "Corporations wanting us to accept bad video game practices". They attacked our minds, our bodies, our friends. They targeted Peer Pressure, Fear of Missing Out, and so many other concepts. We now live in a world where CHILDREN can wrack up thousands of dollars on a credit card accidentally. Doesn't matter if you think it is the fault of the parent, before this point the Parent could at least visualize and stop their children from doing that. Because the concept of purchasing something for a child was always physical. What is a person supposed to do against Billions of dollars and Thousands of people? Corporations that can throw mountains of resources, manpower, and time to entice a child/adult to make a purchase in a video game they already purchased? How do you put up a shield to that level of attack?

@@TomasVorik-qz2lw actually it's depending on what they're going after and how. For some of the things such as Tapjoy not providing promised rewards or not clearly stating the terms for getting the rewards. Or with Fortnite and the deceptive way they had players unwillingly make purchases due to the icon for making the purchase being obscured and difficult to see ( not exactly sure what or how this looked like since I never played Fortnite. Netease has already had to deal with the SEC at least twice over the years one being the falsification of actual earnings they submitted one year while the other involved all companies based in China that are in the NYSE. Which involved then being required to submit all financial records for the SEC to go over, which in the past the companies used china's national secrets as a cause for avoiding this and that such investigation will compromise them. I'm not 100% sure the outcome but it seems like they had an independent third party US company go over their books as a compromise. Other companies abandoned the NYSE and started looking into Hong Kong stock exchange. These 2 regarding Fortnite and Tapjoy were a success. It's more been in going after companies for certain anti trust violations or what could lead to such violations. For instance no violation had been done by Microsoft regarding Activision Blizzard. It was the concern or fear of such violations being done by Microsoft owning the company.. One being that the games are exclusive to Microsoft consoles and other products. Long before this, the FTC only has a history of 25% success rate regarding these antitrust cases involving a larger company taking over smaller companies. Even though Netease is doing the same thing, as far as I know they're not under investigation for it. There's other anti competition/antitrust laws that are a bit easier to prosecute which the ones harmed by the violations can be awarded triple in damages from a lawsuit if they win. Such violations being various scams such as bait and switch scene, failing to provide all promised rewards for winning promotional contests (such as the monopoly game that McDonald's did), price gouy and price fixing to prevent competition or to over price goods of low quality, hidden fees being charged for some products are considered a violation of these laws, and in making contracts for exclusive rights to the materials or products of one company or industry in shutting off access to competitors falls under this too. False advertising I believe also falls under this but I could be wrong this. As for the situation regarding loot boxes, it's a certain senator, forgot who, had been bugging the FTC the past number of years to look into them. I believe it's only just recently they actually started doing it.
@desmien679

@@TomasVorik-qz2lw as for gambling in games, it depends on the circumstances. There's definitely going to be something done if it involves in game currency or other items being sold through RMT if the game has gambling mechanics. That's why many of these games claim to have rules regarding RMT between players involving the game and banning some. However even these companies, Netease included will ignore these violations being done by certain players. This also goes beyond the RMT violations but even if it's reported with video evidence of botting behavior or the use of an exploit. Either of which has had players being banned for doing the same thing. Instead the devs have ignored the reports on these players. There's also the issue of these gambling mechanics being accessible ito not just children but in some games designed for kids to play. This was brought up after a number of complaints by parents regarding how easily their kids were able to make purchases in these games and the large amounts being spent on the purchase. In this circumference they're looking at requiring additional label for games that involves microtransactions in warning parents that the game has this mechanic or gambling like mechanic in loot boxes. While also banning such mechanics from games designed for minors. Both of which I believe would have a high chance to be put in effect in the near future. It's more of the loot boxes involving structures adults that would be the most problematic. However in part there's certain things that were not brought up which is only partially caused by the monetization and loot boxes but I personally feel that with the current state of the industry and the way it's going currently. Has a high risk of another crash similar to what occurred in 83. Circumstances maybe very different than back then but the end results of various key factors are showing some presence. Lack of trust in the quality of the games being published is a big one, heavy saturation of the market especially with so many clones of games being made and even more esse in putting them on the market with online stores than back in 83. Even the consoles have loosened up on the requirements for a game being launched on their systems;when working at Activision as QA tester. Some of the tests done were from a list of what was required for games to pass when tested by console companies. who charged thousands of dollars for each time a gais tested and the reason why they had us running the testsfirst to which it had to pass before being submitted to consoles. I had to do these tests once and it's a very long list of multiple pages which includes the button functions on controllers for in-game menu such as X to select and circle to cancel or go back for playstation consoles are a requirement if I'm correct. In games being released for consoles that are heavily buggdd or even incomplete/non functional upon release. After years of such companies as Nintendo being very big on the quality of the games for their systems. It's not just the devs and publishers at risk of losing the public's trust but the consoles themselves. Especially with Nintendo who set a lot of these standards with the NES which was a key part iin saving the industry 2 years after the crash.

This is why I love, cynically. As whales suck the fortunes of both rich and poor alike. ... though being a poor whale, must suck as hard as being a poor drug addict.

Got to say Asmon’s two-ends candle theory is pretty accurate. My elder cousin was a big gamer when I was young. He introduced me to a lot of classic titles like Fallout, AOE, TES and HOMM and even WOW back in early 2000s. He basically educated me to be a gamer. Nowadays he only plays Gacha games on phone due to the lack of time to play other bigger titles. Back then he was a big fan of Baldur’s Gate, NWN and The Icewind Dale. But now he struggles to find time play BG3 while working as a lawyer, raising kids and supporting his family. We are still very close and he often asks me about the newest games. He told me that those gacha games are shitty at best but still that’s the only type of entertainment that suits his schedule.

I would like to point out something. I've been hooked to Gacha gaming since Summoners War released. That was my first gacha, and gacha addiction on my shtt mobile. ( I quit it soon since i was broke and frustrated with it), And since then, my gacha journey began. As I was not earning, I would never spend on those p2w Gacha games, but just try to enjoy them until some kind of frustration of limitless p2w kicked me and then i'd uninstall. The last gacha i played and spent money on was Honkai Star Rail. (But well, my luck screwed me in that, and i just didn't feel like playing it anymore. Also, time consuming and gear grind while i felt that new charas just feel more and more pow-wait back to main topic) Recently, I've been hooked to PC Single player games and the games that are not p2w and only have cosmetics. Elden Ring, Lies of P, V Rising, Fps, and such... What i am trying to say is, I am fine with Gacha game creators dumping out p2w shts without limits because I've put a period on it and it's honestly better this way. Less time waste, less money waste, no sunk cost fallacy, no frustration, and good life. 👍 AND good for those developers who does not make games around p2w monetization in micro-transaction, so people me like who are not super rich, but can afford things can buy such games and enjoy them casually.
