We all suffer from a gap between planning and doing: we make plans that we fail to carry out. This gap does not prove that we fail to do the right things - maybe we just fail to make the right plans. Ironically, the first step towards closing the gap is to realize that we cannot escape from it.
Kirsten Rohde, Professor of Behavioral Economics at Erasmus University Rotterdam, is interested in helping people take responsibility for their own futures. Many of us suffer from a gap between planning and doing. This gap is the result of an ongoing struggle between our different selves. The talk shows that both our current and our future selves have a role when closing this gap. The current self needs to make realistic plans and the future self has to carry out these plans.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

1. Be aware that you cannot run away from this. 2. The gap between planning and doing is a result of a disagreement between our current and future selves. Change in circumstances, preferences, or not enough empathy for our future selves results in this gap. For example, I am excited about waking up early tomorrow but tomorrow, my future self, would hate getting out of the bed (this is a change in preference). Or, I want to buy 10 cupcakes instead of apples, but maybe my future self would like having an apple at home (not enough empathy). 3. We must project our selves into the future and see if our future selves will like our current decisions. We need to prioritize a self by checking the consequences. For example, when I'm setting an alarm, I'm dealing with two future selves, one who doesn't want to get late and one who doesn't want to get up from the bed. I am prioritizing the one who doesn't want to get late as the discomfort of being late > the discomfort from getting out of the bed. 4. Minimising the gap between planning and doing by setting up realistic goals (work of the present self) and being committed to the plan (work of the future self) all the while being aware of the differences of the present and the future self.

Good perspective. 1) be aware of the differences of my own desires. Ex. Excercising in the morning and sleeping when I wake up. 2) set realistic goals and Commit to it. First being aware of this difference in my own self is very important. That's what I got

Wonderfull talk. 1.Prensently rich people specially celebrity lifestyle can be seen by internet, which makes us ambitious and forget our present state. Therefore we increasing the gap between our planning and doing. We have to be more realistic and less ambitious to execute our planning.

Go to bed earlier and throw away the alarm clock? The problem with blaming awareness is that it skips emotion. We are only aware of the things that our nature tunes us into-- what grabs our emotions. So, our plans are really driven by our true nature and resulting emotions (humble opinion). Setting the alarm clock to have coffee with your girlfriend might have a different result than setting it for an early business meeting that is not important and that you are anxious about. But, if you grew up poor and think there is a remote chance the business meeting could be important, and you just found out your girlfriend is cheating on you....it switches...all driven by emotion-- and your own nature.

>"The problem with blaming awareness is that it skips emotion" The point of this talk is that you're aware of this emotion and can include it in your planning.

Ms. Rohde's spoke about the present and future. I have heard psychologist say talking to a child about a positive outcome instead of scolding them in the present moment for X has much better results than actually last life long. I believe Kirsten is saying do this for one's self? Which makes sense. I like the talk. Good Job Kirsten.

I am really tired of unbalance between planning and doing. I hope these 3 things will help me fill the gap 1. Circumstances 2. Priority 3. Hard to guess what future self will need and like. Thank you😊, Kristen Rohde.

This was a very new perspective about the planning; thinking in terms of present and future self (planner and doer) and why there is disagreement. The simple alarm clock setting example was very great used to explain the complex concept. It was eye opening and was bit philosophical as well as we keep struggling within ourselves to find answer this dichotomy. Awesome speech Madam. Hats off!

Interesting content. Positive criticism: Arguing a bit the way it has been delivered. Difficult not to get distracted by the same tone-rhythm of the voice associated to the fact she's either reading to much or talking to invisible smurfs. It is my opinion we could use half of the time to deliver the same topic while being more effective.

A behavior change effort succeeds when the initial motivation to engage in the behavior change is channeled towards creating achievable automated habits, rather than expecting those levels of motivation to be maintained indefinitely. Because regardless of how intense the initial feeling is. It eventually wears off with time. And you can't plan for your best version of yourself to show up every time, you have to use your energy to set systems. the belief is that well-defined system are very hard to set, but they are easier to maintain than a haphazard system that rely on having high levels of energy and motivation every time. The systems rely on the power of habit formation through repetition, environment design and reasonable expectations.

But what if you feel like every thing is extremely perfect in your live, and the change in your case will only lead to something "bad", how do you move from that position, is not like I am living in 15 million mansion and a top model with 3 ginias kids, but I feel that I am totally sutisfacted with my live, but in praktic, is not really true, there is off ourse a lot of things I what to get done ore accomplish, so how do you get that kick in the as, when you don't feel any discrepancy between your self now, and yourself tomorrow.

...these ideas are simple, if you got a bad start in life it can set you back 20 to 30 years...she actually knows less than some poorer people, the environment has to be good & safe....then you can build...if the base of your existence sucks...wealth will help not a lecture. These folks are everywhere, with ideas that will not help. In fact we don't have the medical technology nor the understanding of technology to fix stuff, we actually want people to mess up so we can feel good. She misses that we have a fundamental issue in our minds, we are horrible selfish creatures.
