Great job, Mr. and Mrs. Toy Man!! We've actually visited most all of these layouts during our trips to St. George. The Balsterholts, Schneiders, Fitches and Mayers welcomed us over even when it wasn't a meet day. Thank you all for being such fantastic ambassadors of garden railroading!

G Scale is my passion! I always loved how Gardening and moving train action combined so well together, thanks for showing these great layouts with so much incorporated rock & stone. Because of life's issues my G scale layout is much smaller and easier to work on than previous versions...now all that is running is a short line - "The Puckety Chute Railroad"

The key to a successful rail road especially with older people, I’ve met a few old people so I know, is keeping it really easy to get to know crawling around on the ground. I know Budget my crawling around on the ground events to four per day. So ground-level railroading is just right out.

Yea. Love to see that run!!! I sort of wonder if it will go around the track. No real sharp curbs but still may not be able to get around it. A friend had one of those big boys. Well an early version. But he put in a special track in his front yard just to run it. About 15 foot radius curves. Really a huge oval in his front yard.

Great tour! Thank you. A buddy of mine, also a reenactor, designs and installs garden railways all over the west coast. He lives only 35 minutes from me; but, I've never seen any of his work except on his Facebook page. I'd do this, too, if money wasn't an option. We've got a great "mountainous" property that would handle a very large piece of Colorado in 3 foot gauge! But, then I also want to live steam the hills behind the neighborhood... (none of it our property). Rats. Never hurts to dream big.

It’s gotten more affordable over time but that’s not saying much is it! When I look at that 2000 foot rail road and I try to imagine that he spent somewhere around five dollars a foot, the mind boggles. Although that’s about the price of two of those big boys so nice to have money isn’t it!

That was an enjoyable show. It's incredible what some people do in a small space in their yard. In some cases it takes over the whole yard! At one home their back and side yard had been dug out of the hill side so the layout runs in raised beds. The track looked to be something wider than G gauge. The one time I went by while the train was out the cars looked to be very caryoonish, like you would see in Who Framed Roger Rabbit. I had to stop and just watch it for a while.

Be sure to watch in the morning and we will show you where we’re installing our real Road. The rail I have is aluminum and I’m thinking of using it simply because I have a left over from my previous railroad and free is a good price. If I had it to do over and Budget was not a problem stainless steel would be the way to go.

@ToyManTelevision
@ToyManTelevision 4 года назад
I’m guessing that you’re referring to union pacific 3985. The Challenger locomotive. It was taken out of service a few years ago and it was announced that it would be rebuilt. As near as I can tell secretly they had no intention of rebuilding the engine. It has significant problems. But they didn’t want to announce publicly that they had no intention of rebuilding it. But there had been an idea floating around for quite some time to rebuild a big boy locomotive. And with the Challenger in such bad shape it was actually cheaper to rebuild a Big boy then repaired the Challenger. So without telling anybody that they had no intention of rebuilding the Challenger they simply went ahead and restored 4014, the big boy which I think was clearly intended as a replacement for 3985. And now they are publicly announcing that they will not be rebuilding 3985. But never say never and 3985 can be repaired if someone wants to spend the money to do it. It certainly will not be scrapped out it just won’t be rebuilt in the foreseeable future. In the meantime we can all enjoy a Big boy.

The boxes for the locomotives are not a new idea, per see; it most likely derives from British model railroading where people don't often have much space. In lieu of a huge extravaganza, they build small, portable shelf layouts which represent one location ( a dockside, branchline terminal, etc.). Then, to represent "the rest of the world", they use such devices as fiddle tracks, train-length turntables, and what are called cassettes which are similar to what was in your video and serve much the same purpose.
