Featuring TheElevatorChannel! This is the North tram, going up.
Jacob just filmed the southbound the train, but I got both! Unfortunately, these were the only two elevators we both filmed together, but there is some other video footage that includes both of us, coming up soon..

Thank you for sharing. I was 4 or 5 when I was inside the arch. I'm in my 40's now and I'm way to scared to go back.

I did this back in the 70's and loved it. Now I'm claustrophobic just watching this vid from the comfort of my home.

If it wasn't for Jacob I wouldn't be watching. I'm glad he's with you. I was hoping the infamous Jacob would be in this video, and thankfully, Jacob is here. I feel like I am there with you, and Jacob. I feel at peace. This is my heaven, bless you Jacob.

Bummer! It was something I thoroughly enjoyed. It is a bit too close for comfort in the tram with 5 people, especially strangers. But it's a quick ride.

I went there on a Saturday several hours before a Cardinals game the first time I went there and it was packed. I took an hour of waiting to get to the elevators and when we got to the top it was so packed it was hard to find a window. Next time I went to it was a Monday afternoon in January. I was one of about 5 or 6 people at the top. Much more enjoyable to be able to see everything and not have so many people up there.

Yes, of course! It always kills me when people are surprised and pissed about waiting for anything when they show up at peak hours/weekends/nice day/grand opening, etc. Really changes your experience to go places at night, early morning, off-season, etc.

When we went it was late May and unplanned. We were the last group of the day to go up so we barely made it in time. There were several people at the top but not so many that there was a problem finding a window to look out of. I loved it. A great experience!!!

You may realize the change in the doors on the elevator cabs. When Dieselducy filmed it, the doors were made of polished wood. The doors now contain full height windows. MissouriElevators rode this. He was in car #5. Part of the system was also done by the St. Louis Car Company which was the company that built the streetcars here in St. Louis. The real Streetcar 1743 and the real Streetcar 1664 were also built here in St. Louis.

When I went on the arch all of the lights were those old construction worker lights that were basically "Bulbs in cages." The whole area was the same orange color as the VERY top and the VERY bottom. Now it's either dark like this video or in dieselducy's video... I noticed that those "Bulbs in cages" lights were replaced with LEDs that gave it this scary pink-ish color. But the whole ride was illuminated by orange lights. That was it. Now it's like orange lights, Exit sign with emergency elevator... Orange lights disappear into this... Pink... Then lastly the orange lights come back with a little bit of that pink mixed in there (That grey of the stairs probably doesn't help...)

Thank you for the video! We're planning a road trip from MA to St. Louis and the main reason is to visit the Arch. I was trying to figure out if it would be ok for kids to ride the pod and go on the observation area on top, and it seems fine.

Cool! Make sure you lock up your stuff before you leave your car so no one can see it. St. Louis has a problem of people breaking into cars.

A pulley system lifts the elevator up, and the cars can pivot freely, so that they can adjust to the slant of the tower to keep upright.

I am trying to find out an old family story whether my grandfather, Hugh Young of Centralia, has a significant hand in the construction of the tram in the archway. He was superintendent of Illinois Central during the late 50's and could have conceivably been used at the very least as a consultant. is there anyone who can identify the vendors or manufacturers that aided in this construction?

@ATSaale
@ATSaale 5 лет назад
they would show bits of the the documentary on building the arch back in the day. When I was a kid there was usually an hour wait or so to ride the tram to the top. I've watched a few of these videos and that does not seem to be the case anymore, most people walk right down there and get on. I remember being a kid on field trip and waiting at least an hour.
