It is not that she did not want to sing, she did, but her realization that it is possible to sing well in this type of music and it was possible for her to make the music she loved, while singing the way she wanted. At the time there were few women and most voices were 'interesting', but not skilled. Anneke and, a few years later, Tarja pioneered the voice as an instrument in metal, as opposed to someone shouting some lyrics.

The best song from "The Gathering" is for me at least "Travel". It is about Mozart, who besides being a fantastic composer was also a bit off the rails, like so many genius people. Definitely worth a listen, and an expression of admiration for Mozart. So you see, musicians respect all kinds of music. I hope you experience the same as I do when I listen to this song, enjoy and pay attention to the lyrics. Live at Doornroosje.

I had such a crush on her, still adore her today, logically because she's such a great front lady and genuine person who did not let fame change her in any way or form, she's truly loves what she does. And more importantly, she and her band have paved the way for many of the people we adore today. (Like Floor Jansen for instance) Thnx for the react Mike and Ginger, it's always a good day when you hear Anneke sing :)

Great song from a great album! Saw them live for the first time in December 1995 and still have got the poster with the cover artwork which was handed out to everyone attending the concert. If I were to suggest a live song, it would be the version of "Rescue Me" from the "A Sound Relief"-DVD, especially because of the awesome theremin solo - something you don't get to hear very often, especially not in metal music. This version is also to be found on youtube (with Spanish subtitles), but I don't know if it would be safe for a reaction-video. You might still watch it for your own pleasure.

Sorry, this ain’t grunge at all. This was their most accessible song (it was a radiohit over here) but their roots are atmospheric doom metal. Oh, and it is not her band. In fact when she joined they were already working on their third album. Most of the music was already written. If it is anyone’s band then it sure is the band is the brother Hans and Rene Rutten (drums and guitarplayer on the left) as they formed the band. Together with keyboardplayer Frank Boeijen they are the original members that have been with the band since inception. Regarding their influence: their debut (without Anneke but with a line up featuring a male grunter and female vocalist) is the one album that has been hugely influential on the European metal scene closely followed by that first album with Anneke. It was the contrast between make grunts and ethereal female vocals that was pretty unique at that time. It spawned the whole Beauty & The Beast style. I don’t know if you watched it already but there is great video of The Gathering playing the song Travel at their TG25 anniversary show. Anneke guested there as well almost all vocalist who ever had sung with The Gathering. At the end of the song they all come out and join in on the end chorus.
@grungegrumpy3585

Awwright ... so this it where it started. Doomy and gloomy with their landmark album Mandylion. And from this point on they evolved to give Mike that more Floydy metal touch with an even more melodic and,melancholic sound to eventually end with kinda shoegazing / trip hoppy 2006 album Home, and Anneke's final tour with them 'A Noise Severe', after which their ways parted but neither ended. I bet their 2005 concert 'A Sound Relief' in which they produced a breathtaking trip hoppy soundscape will please Mike the most. The Gathering paved the way for many, many bands with most of their albums marked 'innovative' in one way or another. For Anneke's vocals this was just the beginning and in later albums, collabs and concerts she developed her unique sound that made her one of the most wanted featured vocalists in metal and related genres. Nightwish's Tuomas was looking for a vocalist 'like that chick from The Gathering'. And Devin Townsend tagged her his hero and Metal Tinkerbell. So much more vocal and musical experiences to explore when you go further down Anneke's and The Gathering's rabbit holes. Enjoy! Do note the most recommended reaction videos elsewhere in this comments section to get a feel of the true force of nature Anneke would become when belting and wailing it out loud. That especially holds for tracks she wrote herself with The Gathering and then especially those performed during their TG25 concerts in 2014, and in the numerous performances with Devin and Arjen, as both these musical geniuses also realised how to optimally utilise her vocal capabilities. Ofc, there's more, much more. And for Gathering and Anneke fans it has always proven to be a tough decision to pinpoint their best or most signature songs and performances ... as there are so many tasteful dishes they served.

I love a lot of Anneke's works, but for someone looking to focus on her vocals, some of her more current works are better. She has an incredible ability to smile all the time while performing. Hurricane - Darkest Skies are Brightest (2021) (Rock) The Endless Sea (gentle version) - The Gentle Storm (2015) (Arjen side project) My Champion - Vuur (2017) (Metal) Can't wait for you to discover more of Ayreon's works. Honestly was never a big fan of "strange machines" as i feel it`s not very representative of the band. They were very atmospheric and trippy. More recent is difficult as she unfortunately left the band many years ago... but they did a 25 years reunion concert and i would start there. For a more trippy one start here(Travel): ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Y46Lft_BZxo.html For a more rocky one here(On Most Surfaces): ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UpEm0YZWI8k.html For one off the Album before she left the band(Waking Hour): ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-pUKBV8M_XXE.html Also "Amity", "Saturnine" and "The Big Sleep" are must hears. After that she had solo albums as "Agua de Annique" later as "Anneke Van Giersbergen" and a more heavy band called "Vuur". Also a one album symphonic metal projekt called "The Gentle Storm". If you want VERY recent she just released a solo Album called "The Darkest Skies Are The Brightest" in which she reflects her divorce (Hurricane): ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-T8PA4w1iSug.html Sorry for the long comment but i just love her very much and got excited seeing a reaction from you guys. Who started using female voices was CELTIC FROST (Switzerland) in 1984 and THERION in 1992 [(Sweden) the band formed in 1987, use keyboards, but it was DEATH-BLACK METAL] uses female and choral voices. So the DNA of the bands with WOMEN ON VOCALS is death and black metal - symphonic metal too, but not Nightwish that was a POWER METAL band, inspired by Stratovarius, something like Yngwie Malmsteen in 1984, and the voice of Kari Rueslatten (style folk) of The Third and The Mortal the inspiration for Tuomas to invite Tarja). The Gathering begins ATMOSPHERIC DEATH-DOOM with "Always ..." by the band The Gathering (as Paradise Lost - UK, is Gothic) is also a precursor to female vocals [Marike Groot - vocals (1992-1993; participation in 2014, it was NOT ANNEKE)]. They do not use female vocals throughout the album, but it is something that is never done in DOOM METAL (in death as I said it is Celtic Frost). In songs like "Second Sunrise" and "Stonegarden", it adds textures to the vocals and a lighter approach to death-doom. The Gathering uses this approach more than Paradise Lost and it gives the band more depth. First album of The Gathering "Always ..." is innovative for death-doom-gothic metal. The lyrics are sophisticated and dark and the way The Gathering uses these new features for this metal direction is unique and different for that time. THIS DIRECTION WOULD NOT LAST LONG, as the band would continue experimenting more, and would make cuts in their music and vocals. As in Mandylion, Strange Machines was here. The first album of the Theater of Tragedy (this is the divisive album in terms of musical impact) was released a few months before Mandylion (The Gathering) and is the beginning of the vocal beauty and the beast with Liv Kristine (main vocal, in this case from The Gathering to Marike was supporting vocal and then Anneke was the only voice of The Gathering). The album "Mandylion" helped to inspire many future Gothic Metal bands in the next decade that had a female singer. True, The Gathering's third album (Mandylion) did more than that, it broke the limits that women can do for heavy metal. Even Floor was influenced to sing metal, not vocal style. The Gathering had already made musical revolutions during their death-doom era, especially with "Always ..." They were one of the first doom metal bands to use gothic metal keyboards, and the second to use female backing vocals (behind Paradise Lost, gothic band). When Bart Smits left the band, the guitarist took over the vocals in "Almost a Dance". It would be a musical and creative disaster since the vocals, music and production on this album would be below average and uninspired (female vocals by Martine Van Loon). For "Mandylion", The Gathering places a bet by bringing Anneke Van Giersbergen, 22, to be the vocalist and change her vocal and musical direction. "Mandylion" is undoubtedly one of the biggest and most important Gothic Metal albums. The impact alongside what the Theater of Tragedy was doing was felt during the 2000s and is still today. The cliché characteristic of this term "main female band" was because of bands like Theater of Tragedy, The Third and The Mortal and The Gathering. However, The Gathering caused greater criticism because of the creativity and experimentation that was finally well performed with this album (unfair because The Third and The Mortal was even more avant guard).

Anneke has (according to her own words) been her eye-opener and motivation to start her Modern Music education at the Rock Academy (in Tilburg, NLD) and look where it has taken her. Can you imagine what an honor she thought it was to be invited by Arjen Lucassen (Ayreon) to, among other things, stand on one stage next to her rolemodel Anneke to sing 'The Valley of the Queens' (also with Marcela).
