In this epic and intimate novel, Ulysses S. Grant reflects on the crucial moments of his life as a husband, a father, a general, and a president while writing his memoirs and reckoning with his complicated legacy. Moving from blood-stained battlefields to Gilded Age New York, we follow Grant as his views on race and Reconstruction changed over time. Author Jon Clinch breathes fresh life into an American icon in another work of “must-read modern literature” (Charles Frazier, New York Times bestselling author).
Copies of The General and Julia are available for purchase through the Mark Twain Store; proceeds benefit The Mark Twain House & Museum. Books will be shipped after the event. We regret that we are NOT able to ship books outside the United States as it is cost-prohibitive to do so.
