The Geology of Diamond Deposits: how they form and how you can prospect for them

Diamond geology - Exploration geologists have made a number of important discoveries that have changed their view on how diamonds form and how they arrive on the surface. The big discovery that changed how they view things was the determination that diamonds are far older than the host rock kimberlites and lamprolite rocks they are found in. Scientists have determined the pressure and temperature conditions needed to form diamond these are pressures higher than 590,000 PSI at temperatures of 1800 degrees Fahrenheit.
The crust of our earth averages about 25 miles thick, but even the pressures at this depth are still not enough to form diamond. It actually takes something more than 75 miles of rock on top to create that pressure needed for diamond formation. As a result, only at those places where the crust has been thickened by the forces of tectonic plate collisions.

Hi Chris Maryland-DC area smack in populated places there's history of gold in small amounts. What is your opinion about getting a gold metal detector?

Most of that gold is tiny particles, almost like dust. Metal detectors cannot see gold that small, so no, not a good idea.

Hey Chris. 10:43 Thats not always true that kimberlite doesn't rise above the topography. In the most recently known kimberlite, the Igwisi Hills, the kimberlite actually had a flow. It also depends on the country rock it erupted into. In sedimentary country rock emplacement, the kimberlite is often harder. In a different example, the lamproites in the Leucite Hills of SW Wyoming, most of the lamproites rise above the landscape.

I don't think I said it is never above the topography, but it usually is bellow the topography. That is not to say there are never exceptions. and Lamproites are not the same as Kimberlites, so comments on Kimberlites are not to be extended to other types of rock.

Wow I just looked up the psi at the deepest part of the ocean and it’s only a little over 15,000 psi.. 👀 I thought it would be more than that.. 🤷‍♂️

So what you’re describing is a deep mantle formation of diamonds.. 🤔 I think it more signals maybe they really don’t understand how diamonds formed.. Yes I’m a lab conditions can be created to form diamonds. But it just doesn’t add up with the real world understanding of deep geology. When I look into our understanding of the layers of the Earth. I realized how quickly hard facts of the surface turn to theory and accepted speculation as to the deeper processes going on. 🤷‍♂️

There may be a lot more knowledge of how and when diamonds form that you think there is. Its not like a short video such as mine can cover vast amounts of laboratory and field derived information.

Carbon is the element. Diamond and graphite are forms of the element carbon.

Good story but no one knows the exact way a diamond is made. And for where it's made and how far down, well another good story. Farthest man has drilled was 8miles and they were wrong at every step of the way as what the next layer would be. Nice thought experiment though. But to say this is fact is just straight up being dishonest.

Intresting video. Are there false diamont near Clearlake California. Seems i heard something years ago. Mountains are inportant for water distribution. Water can be more precious then Gold or diamonds!

Claiming to "know that no one knows" is something that requires proof (not one shred of which you provided). Claiming to know things you just have no idea about is very dishonest on your part.

John - loads of quartz crystals get called "diamonds". Water canbe very precious if you are dying of thirst, but normally, it is easily available.
