I was an immigrant in Germany learning the language in 1st grade but did well in school. At end of 4th grade, I wanted to go to Gymnasium with my German friend. Our teacher and principal advisedI should go to Hauotschule or Realschule instead although my grades were better than my friend's. He explained I would face more difficulties later despite my current good grades. We didn't listen to him as I didn't know anything else and wanted to be at the same school with my friend. I excelled in Gymnasium but my German friend unfortunately failed and eventually transferred to Realschule. The principal had no worries about her attending Gymnasium.

I’m glad you did so well. People make it seem like working hard will prevent it but your case shows it doesn’t. Definitely something I will look out for when it comes to my daughters.

@@ConvosXpodcast That's a general problem in - some Bundesländer - where teacher have too much to say about the future of the kid. BUT the other way round you could also have miserable parents who would send the kid to a lower level because they don't believe in their child, then a teacher could intervene and propose a higher level. In general teachers should empower kids to reach for the highest level and maybe it's better now. The problem with the interview (beginning) is that it's too much about "black people" not proposed to higher levels of education. That's not true. The teachers decide on the general appearance of the child. How behaves it in class? How is the homework? etc. Black parents who were mostly new in this county did (mostly) not know how to prepare the kids for school. And also german parents who are uneducated, poor etc. tend to be not as good as supporters as educated or richer parents. Also kids who have ADHD or other stuff cannot behave like other kids in school and don't find the way to Gymnasium even if they are smart. Not every kid has the same chances and that happened to too many black kids. In contrast asian parents had mostly a strong work ethic and prepared their kids in that manner, they were better than the german kids - even when the parents didn't speak german very well or had no high education. This is complex and it's not good to talk about skin colour right away. That doesn't help.

Never forget: Teachers are only human! Decades away, I had to run through special exams to enter gymnasium. Well, now I have the Dr. in front of my name. The German system may be outdated, but there are 100 and one loops in it, to get where you want to get if you are fit enough. So it is up to the parents to choose the best for their children. By the way, it happens now and then, that although the teacher begs the parents to chose a better education, they put the thump down, wishing their children not to become smarter than they are instead of working hard in the family business. But luckily, when the kids have become off age, they still can make their Abitur and later graduate.

I'm white and I had the same experience as an immigrant child in Germany. 1st -4th grade. I failed at everything. It was impossible to get praise from the teacher, while the other kids received recognition and praise for the same thing I did. The Germans really do separate children in elementary school and decide your potential way too early in life. Essentially, immigrants and other minorities at best will become blue collar workers. The USA may not be perfect, but the USA allows ANYONE at any level of society to go out and become successful at any time.

Thank you so much for sharing that perspective. I hope everything turned out alright for you in the end. I have two daughters and I really hope they don’t have to deal with this. Their mother is very assertive so I’m sure they will not. But as soon as I suspect it. I will move them to Ghana or back to the UK.

Take your kids out of Germany right now. That's what we did and it was the best decision we ever made. Germany is the toughest, most dangerous and most racist country for Africans in the western hemisphere.

German-German kids face the issue of school track, too, but at least they don’t suffer from the potential immigrant bias…and thankfully parents get the last say. Generally speaking the track system isn’t bad but it would be more effective if the split were done two grades or so later…maybe track them all along Realschule and have them split at the end into vocational or academic training. And get rid of Hauptschule.

My daughter is in the same situation. I kindly told them that she will be attending gymnasium, end of story. It seems the teacher may have been a bit unfair because my daughter doesn't have the same level of German as the other kids. But hey, my daughter is already fluent in two languages. It just takes a bit of time to master both languages completely.
@ConvosXpodcast
@ConvosXpodcast Месяц назад
Glad you are putting your foot down. I hope she gets the best education possible. This scares me a little as my daughter is also picking up 3 languages and she mixes them up sometimes but her German is the best. But not as fluent as her mates. I’m hopeful but keeping an eye on this.

@3:40, Germany is very entrepreneurial, they are just more practical and vocational oriented in education while Britain is academic base education and entrepreneurship in Britain is championed mostly by migrants, especially the Asain communities.

Exactly you stood up and confront them. Thats the way you gain respect. You are telling them how they should treat you. I remember reading an article where D.Washington said that he never accepted any stero type foolish roles reserve for blk folks in any movies. He stuck to his rules and respect for himself, Look at al the films he appears in😅😅😅. Teach people how to respect you.

@ 9:09 "The black church is a huge part of any black community." That sounds like one of the biggest problems, right there. Once people are convinced that evidence and logic aren't important, how do you expect them to succeed in life? Wouldn't the community improve if everyone stopped claiming the opposite of what we can demonstrate to be reality?
@ConvosXpodcast
@ConvosXpodcast Месяц назад
Religion is no where near the problem nor solution. Plenty religious communities succeed including many African ones. For me a unified identity and group economics is most important.

@@ConvosXpodcast How can lying to people and claiming knowledge that they can't demonstrate be helpful to a community? That would only lead to an ignorant community that no one outside the community trusts. Is that what success looks like? Because I wouldn't want to be part of a community that everyone else thought was ignorant and untrustworthy, would you?

@ivywoodxrecords Huh? That’s what you got from this? Stop projecting Sir. Says a lot about you. We can't please people like you. Enjoy whatever it is you like doing. I think my videos may not be good for your heart. Just watch something else.

I am not the most religious person but I believe in a higher power. I am on record in this very podcast saying "Religion is one of the worst things to happen to African people". But i acknowledge this is what faith is, though blind. People want something to believe in. I believe Its a human thing. Religion can be poisonous because of human beings exploiting it. As we do with everything else. I don't agree with you entirely you because many of the best people I know have been a part of some religion. Be it success in wealth, education, community building, activists etc. I don't think belief in a religion is a deciding factor on how successful a group could be.I understand your sentiment and will never question your rejection of the idea of religion because you are entitled to it, so are they. You are not a better human for your mindset and vice versa.

@@ConvosXpodcast "Show me your friends and I'll show you who you are". is an old saying. If you're hanging around with people that disagree with proven, evidence based information, then people will think you're just as ignorant as the people you're hanging around with. If you hang around with people that make claims that they can't show to be true, people will think you're a dishonest person too. So, If "The black church is a huge part of any black community." then people will think the black community is just as ignorant and untrustworthy as the church. That's why it's a problem.

No one is talking about native Germans facing the same issue! This is how the system works and not designed against anyone. Parents should understand the system and help their kids perform better at school.

I have spoken to numerous people some on this podcast who have all explained how badly the schooling system has affected the them or their kids. From the stories I have heard it’s not working very well for a faction of the population. Maybe it has for you or people you know. But not for everyone. And everybody is entitled to higher education not a select few for whatever reason. The goal of any education system is to make sure everyone is achieving as high as possible if not then it may not be fit for purpose. Also if you go through some of the comments you will read other people’s experiences.
@ezeoha4502
@ezeoha4502 Месяц назад
I understand where you are coming from. The German system is different from what is done in Ghana and UK. While we may not have the opportunity to explore the merits of these different systems, I try to explain it is not designed for anyone. I have heard discussions with natives Germans where some say it favours the girl child more than the boys. Because it seems girls pick up early in school than boys. You might agree with this too. Again, children from parents without any university education are more likely not to go to Gymnasium. This is because they don’t seem to care or don’t understand a life they have not lived. And I agree children with immigration background including those of African origin will be affected more. It means as a parent, who desire the best for my kids, I should understand the system and assist my children to attend the heights they desire. It means I shouldn’t treat my kids as if we were in UK where it is designed differently.

@@ezeoha4502 that parents didn't attend university has absolutely nothing in determining if a child will. I mean, back in Africa most of our parents didn't attend universities but they made sure that we did. It boils down to motivation. My elder brother used to have very poor grades in high school but he picked up much later and attended university with 2 scholarships. He is presently an aeronautical engineer working for a big company. If he had grown in Germany, he wouldn't have gotten the chance.
