The first time I used them I was blown away! So I bought 4 pairs (2 of the older model)!! I was in the military and for 10 years I've used a lot of different boots but believe me these are the best boots I know for this price range. You can't go wrong. Nowadays I use them everyday (for 2 years now) for work and to go hiking. They might be a little heavy for those not used to combat boots, otherwise, considering the quality/comfort/price ratio, they are just the best boots I know of.
I had some in the 80s and 90s. They're waterproof, last ages 3 years on motorbike all day winter and in the snow. I did a trek to 5000 m in the Himalayas. The sole eventually came unstuck on that trek after over 3 years very hard mountain use in Indian Kumaon around Nanda Devi.
Good review. I bought a pair of these, Grade 1 used, in the 1980s and never realised until now what they were, as they're not often seen in UK. Wore them constantly for 10 years until they fell apart. The most comfortable yet robust boots I've ever had the pleasure of owning.
I had a pair for years loved them they looked knackered but never let a drop of water in were the most comfortable boot I've ever owned the wife said they were wrecked and chucked them whilst I was out I've tryed every other boot since then all crap now watching your video I'm ordering another pair thanks mate
Ive just got a pair, grade 1, and they are all what you said, live up to expectations and more, really comfy, loads of grip, and the support in them is unbelievable, definitely the best boot I own. What ive found on them, that is a major bonus for me is that the leather has a great shine after a good polish and brushing off. This video sold them to me and made me want to get a pair! So thank you for that! Great review!
I wear a pair of these for work and they are by far the most comfortable boots I've owned - Full leather inside and a nice supportive sole, just a great well designed boot and they keep the water out as far as I can tell (I have a pair of Danner Recons which are also great but they are insulated and can get quite hot in the summer, and they are not as solid as these, but cost 4x as much).
i'm on my third pair now can't see past them great boots and the ones i've got have a thin metal plate through the sole to prevent sharp object, i get mine from a shop in Glasgow called Servival 1 present pair excellent nick, £ 18, thanks for sharing great review. cheers Al.
I where these all the time & yes they are 100% waterproof as long as you wax them regularly then if water does get it it's more than likely to come in from the sole due to wear & tear..excellent boots.
Yep you are spot on mate I got one pair of them THE most comfortable I have ever own indeed. All you have to do is keep them into good order. Be safe mate.
i usually take an 8 (270) but was advised by the seller to go to a 265 71/2 . i still wear a thick sock too! i think a good pair of these and the earlier ones too are the best you can get , made by haix or meindl . mind you german stuff is usually good .
I once bought these, they were very little used. After about 20 kilometers of walking the sole came off from the other boot. It peeled off like a banana. For my luck I had only 4 kilometers to home, but walking was tricky at times.
It's hydrolysis. The midsole is polyurethane, or a foam that breaks down when they are not used. Thus, those sitting in storage forever end up crumbling apart. You can find plenty of examples of this online. With the german boot, they just hit the midsole whereas with others like Redbacks you can see the midsole and the outsole. It's a good process, but they need to be used regularly to have it last a decade or more. Welted boots aren't as cushioned and tend to weigh more, but can afford to sit on the shelf longer. Glued soles can also lose adhesion over time as well. If you want examples, google hydrolysis. Same thing happened with the Swiss surplus boots as that surplus product hanging around too long start to break down.
Good review, I've just ordered a pair of Grade 1's and they were only coppers short of £40, not sure what these boots go for new, but after ordering them, I noticed one place were selling supergrade for £50, what a bargain, had I seen those first, for the sake of an extra tenner I would have pulled the trigger on them
A great boot - comfortable from the word go. Certainly no need to break in this boot in my honest opinion. The only thing to watch for is to make sure the welded soles are in good order, because if the spongey upper gets damaged it can start to separate from the tread. If this happens there is nothing known to shoe repairers to fix this - any glues quickly break away as the spongy upper breaks down again. Something to be vigilant of when buying a second user boot. Apart from that, they're the nuts! Superior to our British assault boot, have to say.
I have a pair with size 310 sole. Bought 2nd hand from surplus store nearly 5 years ago. Done well, but right sole is splitting on the seam halfway through in a few places. Can't find another pair anywhere :-( Woman in surplus store said they've had a few soles splitting on recently sold boots too.. If I can find another pair I'll still buy them... Can't find anything else that compares.. Apart from Lowa Combat GTX which are £175 or so. :-/
I order a pair from a guy who's ex u.s. military he had like 3 pairs of them and they sold me a unused pair and I just recently got them in the mail and they are 100% authentic German military issued (I believe they are the mark5 but I'm not to sure I'm still researching on them)
Started wearing these from 1981,one version had quite hard soles, very hard wearing, but great insole and upper support . Could only wear them on exercise,so lasted long time. The soles looked very different as didn't look molded on.After that pair the soles didn't last so gave up on them .
i am wearing this boots for a big period of time. Best advantage is that they are made in different withds. I am wearing the 285 113mm and the Original Haix 285B. they straw my feets like i am wearing sneakers! Wearing them at day and night ! And absolute waterproof.
They are called Kampfstiefel 2000 and were the standard issue for conscripts until conscription was phased out. I have never heard them described as paratroop boots; they are the BW standard, to my knowledge. They are heavy, and bulkier than the magnificent old SADF brown leather combat boot, still the best in my experience.
These are called Bundeswehr (BW for short) Stiefel 2005/2007. They are standard, yes. However, unlike the ealier 2000s these are DMS, directly molded sole. Yes, some conscripts received them as conscription in Germany was paused in 2011.
Actually these boots are defiantly waterproof, the Bundeswehr testes them to be waterproof for walking to water at least 6 hours. And yes the paratroopers (Fallschirmjäger) use them as well, but they are the standard combat boots
Bought a set of Grade1s, the foam midsole turned to powder within a few months and the soles split from the boot, apparently a common problem :( I've had several German para boots before these but these will likely be my last.
A great boot. Comfortable from the word go. Certainly no need to break in this boot in my honest opinion. The only thing to watch for is to make sure the welded soles are in good order, because if the spongey upper gets damaged it can start to separate from the tread. This Boots are for the normal Service in the German Army. Nothing Special. For long March they take other Boots, like Haix Mountain Boot, Lowa etc. Para Boots had Pads in the Side, at least the older Para Boots:) But this Boots are very comfortable. The older Boots are Blister Factorys and Screw Clamps for the Feet :D
Those are just the standard German service boot, paratrooper didn‘t receive their own boot since about 2000, before that they got the same as everyone but with a more heavier lined collar to prevent damage when hitting the ground.
Nice looking boots, think i will stick to my magnum boots they seem to have lasted me well, after they finally wear out ill give these a go, but id opt for new ones, still a good review, cant fault the boots
foggy these are some thing i have used long before i got into the outdoor s i used them with the bikes they are every thing you say and more the most comfortable boot i have ever worn alb
wow I have these exact boots for cadets. didn't buy them off armysurplus but I'm pretty sure they're genuine (they have a serial number punched into the tongue), they are definitely worth every penny, I would say I got them pretty cheap (£69.99) but I would pay over £100, everything in the review is exactly right, they are really well waterproofed and they're really lightweight as well
hi fog you got them then.i get the ones up i got the 2005 i hope to have them up in week but ive dun two videos this week and i think i need a new one.as the sound not right cool video mate
I was hoping you would explain the numbers on the inside of the tongue. I need a new pair but buying online doesnt give you the correct size. My numbers are 300 114 06 016. I know the 300 stands for the length of your foot 300 mm, the 114 is supposedly the width (but how is this measurement taken as it is not 114mm wide?) the other numbers are supposedly the date of manufacture which again I cant work out. Now when I buy these boots online the sizes seem to be rounded off which I think was a size 12 but in actual fact I think are 11 and a half. Can any1 enlighten me regarding these boots ? Best boots ive ever had, the only pair in my life that I wore the soles out, wore them everyday for 3 and a half years as work boots, casual boots, church boots and walking / hiking boots and gave them a proper battering, they even walked half way round the coast of South Africa ! I should have bought a trailor full when I had the chance lol
Hey, I was wondering if those kind of boots would be for walks or hiking. I'm planning on buying myself a pair of german boots but don't know what kind.
One site says they are half lined. How can they be half lined? If I wear a 91/2 in a shoe what boot size do I need? Correction the ones I'm looking at are Austrian but anyone know if their insulated?
It's probably too late since you made up your mind. But for anyone else still interested: Some Austrian ex-army boots are half-lined being lined down from the ankle. Hence they're better for temperatures above freezing.
Dietmar aahh thanks! I’d never heard of a half lined boot, lol. I’m in a warm climate so I really don’t need a lined boot but I like the rest of design of the boot and I like some of the mountain military boots but they are lined too.
Hi, Bushcraft. Thanks for the review! I also just bought a pair of original in 45/290 size. I am 187 cm in height, usually wear EU 45 / UK 10.5 but those boots seem to be a little to big for me, even with fat socks. What's your height? I see you also wear 290 in size.
@@KaiTenSatsumahow are your boots holding up mate ?? I decided to get a pair from surplus after contemplating for weeks but I’m worried about the soles as you were.
Hi fog360! Can you give me advice on bundeswehr size guide? I can't seem to find any useful information on the subject. When i measure my feet, my longer foot is 285mm, so should i buy the exact size, or should i go for 290mm?
***** Got my new BW Kampfstiefel DMS07 from a guy in Hannover about two weeks ago. I won an auction on German e-bay for 85€ incl. shipping. I also got 2 original BW green insoles and two brushes with them for free. So quite a good deal imo. Later i bought two tubes of original BW shoe creme(white/black one with silicon). First impression was just how well built they are. Very nice looking boots also. Picture of them: i.imgur.com/dKbhlWa.jpg After putting them on, i rested a bit. They are super hard to tie properly, i got blisters first time lol.. Then i realized that they have quite allot of room for my feet, i could have gone with 285 size and i would still have room for thick winter socks. So i would recommend going the exact size. They fit good nonetheless in this size also, but i have to tie them strong so my heel isn't moving during walking. Second thing, i realized that they are very comfortable, although a little on the stiff side(which is good imo for a combat boot) and i feel i could be in them all year long and still be comfortable. Third, i completely agree that they are 100% waterproof(i did put bw shoe cream on them though) because i submerged my feet in a local canal all the way until the tongue ends, so pretty much their entire height for about 1min and my feet were completely dry.I think that if i maintain them right(after every walking in dirt/water etc apply shoe care product) that they will last a long time(at least 5-6 years) especially because i wont be using them very often. After some online research i saw that there are a few company making boots for bundeswehr and not all of them are in Germany by Haix, they seem to have subcontractors that make them like (Prabos in Poland, Iturri in Spain, etc).. So i don't know which ones do i have because they all look completely the same). They guy that sold me told me they were Haix, and it said Haix in ebay description. I will mostly likely do a review on them as u did after some time in them. So all in all, quite happy with them. ps: I did see in a yt video that some Hungarian guy had problems with sole coming off during hike, so i hope i wont have the same fate.
Patrick Hadow Hi Patrick,This video is getting old and the boots are getting harder to find,The web site has change to field leisure,I will be reviewing some new boots very soon.
I had a pair of these i wore them every day for 3 years and the tread never wore out the sole came away from the rest of the boot I walked anything up to 20 miles in a day while wearing them and there best boots ive ever owned
