Garlock, CA was known as Cow Wells or El Paso City, then in 1896 Eugene Garlock opened a mill there and the town eventually became known as Garlock. Located a few miles off Highway 395 and a few miles from the much more famous "living" ghost town of Randsburg, Garlock is an interesting stop when traveling the 395 in California.
The town was primarily a water source for nearby mines and Randsburg, but in later years it was the site of a speakeasy, a brothel, and was visited by Charles Manson.

Highway 395 is an interesting road with a lot of history. When I lived in CA, I liked exploring the sites around San Bernardino. I enjoy your narration.

Well, I live in Ridgecrest and have worked in Randsburg and I drove through the town almost every day when I worked at Edwards AFB. I feel kinda sad that it is deteriorating at faster rate than when I first got here.

In the 1960's, I found a 1798 Spanish silver coin in a Garlock ruin.

@@SidetrackAdventures While driving through Garlock, I recognized the ruin that was in a metal detector ad. Two guys previously found a cache of old coins. I looked to see if they missed any. Yup, one.

Been there on our way through Randsburg and Burro Schmidt's Tunnel. Drove up the hill in 4x4 to reach the tunnel. It was owned by a son and his mother who lived there. They may both be dead now. We walked all the way through, the tunnel getting lower and lower as Schmidt got tired and exhausted. We finally broke through to the end looking over a dry lake bed.

I'm loving your content. Just found your channel. I wrecked my 1985 Toyota 4runner in Garlock CA when I was 17 many years ago. Always wondered about this place. I lived in the nearby town of Ridgecrest. Also just watched your hubcap center of the world video about Pearsonville. I grew up 10 minutes from that place and had no idea about any of that 😂

We love your videos and your knowledge! We like to go out finding ghost towns, old mines, etc. What angers me is the total disrespect shown by some people by leaving graffiti on old buildings, and some that feel like a big man or woman, I suppose, by shooting up buildings, signs, and everything. Why? They just trash places out and ruin it for others.😠

The tracks are still used by the Trona Railroad. It takes chemicals mined from Searles Valley to Mojave.

That name, “El Paso City” Is peculiar to me. Mary Robbins sang a song of El Paso City but he places it by the Rio Grande river, so that must have been Ell Paso Texas. Was the name change due to Mr. Garlock buying the town?

We went to Garlock in 1972 I think it was and it was in better shape than that. Not much in the way of graffiti either. Much of it was fenced off as well and it looks like some thieves stole the fence. Not vandals, thieves as the chain link fences are gone with the posts.

It was a rattlesnake attraction, I worked there and we charged a nickel to each person to get in then we charged a dollar to get out.

It's stupid kids just doing stupid things. Only when we grow older and become connected to history and the land do we ever put value on what was once there and the stories to be told. I agree, its shameful.
